Be it known that SHE-LTON J. GUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gunntown, in the county of Levy and State of Florida, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in reels,
The object of this invention is to provide a reel for holding coils of sheet iron for use more particularly in handing the edges of box or crate covers and bottoms.
Another object is'to prevent the banding material from being pulled from the reel faster than is needed, the material'being more or less resilient expands immediately when the pull is relieved coming in contact with the stationary band which serves asa brake, the next pull automatically contracting the material relieving its contact with the stationary board.
The more essential features of this inven--- tion include a detachable and rotatably mounted reel spider which has the banding material spooled thereon and a rim within which the banding material is held, andv through an opening in the edge of which it is drawn out by the banding machine preliminary to its application to the cover or bottom. or other material to be bound.

A, represents a rim held by several arms 1, four being shown upon the supporting block 2, secured upon-the upper end of the standard 3, by set screw 7, and this standard is supported upon a base 4t, and is capable of being adjusted up and down by nuts 5 and 6, the l. tter being a lock nut turning upon threads on the lower end of the standard and resting upon the upper end of the base a, as shown in Figure 2.
The reel 8, is provided with a hub 9, which is mounted and turns upon the upper end of the standard 3, and this reel carries the metal banding or wire which is held thereon between the pins 10, and the rim A.
Cone bearing and ball bearings 12 and 13, are supported in the recess 14, of the upper end of the supporting block 2, and upon thesethe reel turns.
r The supporting block is hexagonal in hori zontal cross section, as shown in Figure hold the rim A, and to receive the addi-' tional arms 15, of which there are two opposite each other as illustrated, and these arms form the support for the cross bar 16, which holds the banding material prevent ing the banding material 'or'wire from coming off the reel. The cross bar is supported by pins 17 extending into holes 18 formed therefor in the outer ends of the arms 15.
The material is drawn out through the slot or hole 18, in the side of the rim as it is required by the machine in box or crate construction.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device is provided for holding and controllinga coil of banding material or wire as it is required in the operation of fastening it upon the edges of the box material;
I claim:
1. The combination of a standard, a stationary supporting block secured thereto, a reel rotatably supported upon said block, a stationary rim arranged above said reel and supported upon said stationary block, and

The combination with a standard, a stationary supporting block. secured thereto and having a hexagonal portion, arms extending from the faces of the hexagonal. portiOn,.a slotted rim secured to certain of these arms, a crossbar extending diametrically over the rim and supported by the outer ends of two of the arms, and a reel rotatably supported upon ball bearings and concentric with the rim and beneath the bar.
