To all to [10m it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS C. HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and 5 State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to improve- 1 ments in fastening devices and while not necessarily restricted to any particular form of fastening device, is particularly adapted for use in connection with collar holders.

In accordance with the invention, there is provided a one-piece strand of wire, preferably spring wire, with terminal return pointed hooks and an intermediate return bend.

The curve or return bend constitutes a handy means for grasping the collar holder between the thumb and first finger of the hand of the user so that the device may be attached tothe collar after the tie then cov-. ering the curved portion of the device has been applied so as to be embedded in the holder with its hooked end joining the adj acent flap of the collar and the return bend concealed in the device.

The terminal hooked ends of the holder as well as the return bend surrounded by the holder are not in sight when the device and tie are applied to the collar, but the inter mediate loop provides a convenient finger hold for applying the device both to the collar and to the tie.

The wire device forming the subject matter of this invention is so shaped as to lie in approximately one plane with the ends hooked in the collar tabs thus holding the; device and the tie against accidental dis placement.

The invention will be best understood from consideration of the following detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification with the understandinghowever, thatthe invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of' the drawing, but may be changed and modi fied so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a negligee collar, with the invention applied.

Fig. 2' is a plan view of the tie holder forming the subject matter of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown a collar 1, which may be of the character usually known as soft or negligee collars and may follow the general contour of such collars.

Negligee collars have a front opening 2 into which there fits an ordinary tie 3 which in turn may be of the ordinary four-in-hand type or other suitable type.

The negligee collar is provided with a holding device 4, shown separately in Fig. 2 and so constructed and shaped as to on gage at opposite ends into the collar 1 on opposite sides of the neck opening thereof to hold the neck opening of the collar from spreading.

The holding device 4 is provided with re turn terminal books 5 adapted to pierce and at their extremities extend through the walls of the collar 1, where flanking the neck opening, at a location about half the height of the said neck openin Intermediate of the l ength of the fastening device 4:, it is formed with a loop or re turn bend 6 which may have a sufficient spread to impart a certain amount of elasticity to the fastening device 4. so that the fastening device may be temporarily spread to facilitate the introduction of the pointed hooks 5 through the walls of the collar with the tie 3 surrounding and embedding such return bend, whereby the fastening device 4: may be embedded at theends through the walls of the collar and the collar itself be put under a certain amount of tension causing the hooks 5 to remain engaged in the collar. v 95 When the collar holder 4cis applied to the collar 1, this may be done before the tie is itself app1ied, ample room being then afforded for attaching the device to the throat opening of the collar, after which the" tie 3 may be adjusted and applied in the usual manner.

When it is desired to remove the tie from the collar and the collar from the person of the wearer, the fastening device 4: is readily detached by disengaging the pointed hooks 5 from the tabs of the collar and thus disengaging the tie as-a whole, the tie being held to the collar by the action of the holden or fastener i made fast to the collar solely by the action of the hooks 5 and the embedding of the return bend 6 where surrounded by the tie itself,

The holder 3% may be very rapidly applied to the collar or disengaged therefrom and moreover may be very cheaply made so that it may be sold at a very small cost and hence will be purchased by almost anyone who desires to wear a four-in-han'd or other tie; with a negligee collar, with the assurance that the invention will be readily adopted by wearers of collars and ties of the characthe bend continued oppositely from the central bend in a reverse direction to the first turn and then at opposite ends again returned upon themselves toward the intermediate portion and sharpened 0r pointed in distant relation one to the other, the device being disposed in one continuous piece.
