G. L. BANKS ET AL CORD CONTROL Filed Jan. 18, 1921 Patented Aug. 21 1923.
ndira stars retreat ill-curiae GEORGE L. BANKS AND MARY R. BANKS, OF LOS ANGEEES, CALIFORNIA.
corn) CONTROL.
Application filed January 18, 1921'. Serial No. 438,196.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, GEORGE L. BANKS and MARY R. BANKS, citizens of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cord Controls, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide means for maintaining aflexible cord, such as the conductor cord for a removable electrical appliance taut during use of the appliance. ln'the present embodiment of the invention I have shown the device applied to the conductor cord for an electric iron, said cord being connected in usual man- -ner to a fixed lamp socket. The means employed for maintaining the cord taut as the iron is moved, comprises a pivotally mounted iron connected to the cord and swung by gravity to a position for maintaining the cord taut. This iron is, preferably, carried by a wall bracket which is so arranged that the support for the iron may be either swung back against thewall out of the way when the device is in use or may be swung forwardly and locked in operative position.
The invention will be readily'understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention and connected to the conductor cord of an electric iron. r
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device swung into inoperative position and disconnected from the conductor cord.
Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2. V
In the drawings I have shown a usual electric iron 1 having the flexible conductor cord connected to said iron and at its opposite end screwed into a usual lamp socket 3 pro ect1ng from wall 4;.
- The means employed for maintaining corc projects forwardly from bearing opening 11 and a key 12 adapted to be received in the same is provided upon arm 7 above the bearing lug and in vertical alinement with the angular-1y bent end 8 of arm 7. Arm 7 is arranged for slight vertical movement in the bearing lugs so that key 12 may engage or be disengaged from slot 10. The upward movement. of arm 7 is limited by collar 13 provided upon the arm beneath the lower bearing lug, and the downward movement of the arm is limited by the abutment of the angularly disposed end 8 of the arm abutting against the upper bearing lug.
When key 12 is disengaged from slot 1.0 and .the supporting arm is swung to one side in its bearing bracket, as shown in Fig. 2,
the angularly disposed end of the arm will extend along wall land thus be out of the way. When itis desired to use the support the end S of the supporting arm is swung outwardly and key 12 is moved into not 1U so as to lock the support in this position.
The hookedend of the supporting arm carries an arm 1 1 which may be formed with a loop 15 intermediate of its ends and a connecting ring 16 received through said loop and over hook 9 for pivotally supporting the arm so as to swing in any direction. A weight 18 is lixed upon one end of arm 14 so as to normally swing the opposite end of the arm upwardly, and this latter end or the arm is provided with a spring C11) 19 in which the flexible cord 2 may be we ged so as to connect the arm and cord.
The operation of the device will be read ily understood by reference to Fig. 1, it be ing understood that arm 14: isconnected to cord 2 between the movable electrical appliance and the lamp socket 3, and that the weighted end of arm 14 will swing the end of the arm which is connected to the flexible cord upwardlyby gravity so as to always maintain the portion of the cord taut which is between iron 1 and the arm 14..
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a flexible cord leading to a movable member, of a rod slidably sustaining the cord and having a loop formed therein, a ring engaging said loop portion, and a supporting rod adapted to engage said ring.
2. In combination, a bracket, bearing lugs secured to the bracket, an arm including t vertical portion rotatably mounted in the bracket and a horizontal portion having it hooked end, a key formed on the vertical portion and adapted to fitwithin' a slot formed in one of the lugs, an arm universally supported upon the first arm a Weight carried by the second arm, and a cord slida-bly' associated with the second arm for the purpose described. i or In testimony whereof We have signed our names to'this specification.
