W H. ROSE SMOKING DEVICE Filed. Oct. 26 1921- Patented Aug. 14, I923.
WILLIAM H. ROSE, F JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 HOWARD S. NEIMAN', OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SMOKING DEVICE.
Application filed October 26, 1921. Serial No. 510,606.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoking Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to smoking devices and refers particularly to devices suitable for use with pipes.
To many smokers, the most serious detriment to pipe smoking is the unpleasant effect of the heated smoke upon the tongue and sensitive tissues of the mouth.
This disagreeable and, at times, dangerous result of pipe smoking is due almost entirely to the fact that the heated smoke issues from the mouth piece in a single column constantly impinging itself upon a particular spot within the mouth, resulting in soreness and irritation at the point of impact.
Any device, in order to overcome the above described objectionable results of pipe smoking, must be low in cost, simple in construction, capable of adaptation to pipes of various sizes and shapes, unattacked "by smoke and moisture, convenient and durable.
The device of my invention possesses all of these desirable qualities as well as other valuable uses.
I have discovered that pliable wire may be coiled, or bent, into a form in which it will overcome the objectionable features incident to pipe smoking and prevent any unpleas ant effect within the mouth of the smoker.
It has the further valuable property of maintaining the smoke passage of the pipe 40 stem in a free condition, unobstructed by accumulated matters.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating one form of the device of my invention, similar parts are designated by similar numerals.
Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of a pipe.
Figure 2 is Figure 1 with one form of my device inserted therein.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of my device shown in Figure 2.
The particular form of my device, shown in the accompanying drawings, comprises a piece of aluminum wire 10, the end of which is bent into a coiled shape 11 within which is a plurality of openings 12.
In employing the device, it is inserted within the smoke passage 13 of the pipe stem 14, extending slightly into the bowl 15 of the pipe. The coiled portion 11 of the device rests upon the extremity of the pipe stem 14.
In using a pipe in the usual manner, as shown in Figure 1, the tobacco smoke escapes through the orifice of the pipe stem in the form of a single column 16 which is impinged upon one spot of the tongue or of the interior of the mouth.
In using the pipe with the employment of my device, as shown in Figure 2, the smoke column within the smoke passage is broken up at the orifice of the pipe stem by the coiled portion of my device and passes through the openings formed by the coiled portion and is thus divided into a plurality of small smoke streams 17 17 distributed more or less completely throughout the mouth of the smoker, thus avoiding the constant strong impingement of a single stream upon one point.
It is to be noted that the wire 10 acts as a means for maintaining the smoke passage free from accumulated matter and that by moving the device inwardly and outwardly by means of the coiled portion 11 the smoke passage may be continually maintained in a clear condition for the passage of smoke therethrough.
It is to be further noted that as the wire is pliable, it can be inserted in straight, or curved, pipe stems with equal efiiciency.
I do not limit myself to the particular described material or length of wire, nor to the particular form of the coiled, or bent, portion thereof, the illustrated device being given for purposes of explanation and clearness of description.
l/Vhat I claim is 1. In a smoking device, a wire capable of insertion within the smoke passage of a pipe stem, one end of the wire being bent to form a plurality of passages for smoke issuing from a pipe stem in which the device is inserted.
2. In a smoking device, a Wire capable of insertion Within the smoke passage of a pipe 5 stem, one end of the Wirebeing so bent as to forma' plurality of loops through the openings of Which the column of smoke Within the passage will issue as a plurality of smoke columns.
Signed atJersey City in the county of 10 Hudson and State of New Jersey this 25th day of October, 1921.
WILLIAM H. ROSE.
