of the city of New York, borough of Man hattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Im roved Hat- Retaining -D8V1C6,..Of which the follow-- ing is a full, clear", and exact description.

This invention has'relation to head wear and has particular reference to a device for retaining a hat,cap or other head wear securely in place on the head "to prevent accidental displacement thereof.

The invention contemplates for its primary object the provision ofa hat retaining device which affords ready means for detachably associating the device with the hat, cap or head wear and which when in active position operates to securely retain the hat against displacement.

As a further object the invention contem plates means for adjusting the device to the head in order that the same may be ap plicable to heads of various sizes.

As a still further object the invention provides a hat retainingdevice which is not readily discernible when in place and which may be readily applied or removed at will.

The invention furthermore contemplates a device of the character described which is extremely simple in its construction, highly eflicient in its purpose and which may be manufactured and sold at a minimum price.

Vith the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other :than those actually illustrated herein, to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating use and application of the retaining device.

Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device removed from the hat.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, A designates a hat provided with the usual sweat band B arranged in the head receiving opening. The device consists of a Her-RETAINING DEVICE.

A bowed resilient element 15 having pads 16 at its opposite ends is positioned with its medial portion in the passage'way or tunnel 12.

In use and operation the member 10 is inserted between the sweat band and the crown C of the hat, preferably at the front portion thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 1, avith the portion which defines the tunnel or passageway 12 projecting above the sweat band. 8

The resilient bowed element 15 lies within and frictionally engages the sides of the crown as illustrated in Fig. 1, thus associating the device with the hat. The user, when placing the hat upon the head, engages the looped portion of the elastic strip 13 around the back of the head, thus securely holding the hat in fixed relation against accident-a1 displacement. To obtain various adjustments'in the diameter of the loop, the ends 14 are manipulated as'will be readily understood. When not in use the device may either be left in the hat or removed and placed in the pocket.

If desiredthe device may be used in the as following manner in lieu of engaging the elastic band in looped form about the head. One of the ends 14: after the device is associated with the hat, is pulled outwardly to cause the looped portion of the band to be tightened about the member 10 and the long end is then tied to one of the buttons of the vest or coat, or otherwise attached to an article of clothing.

I claim:

1. A hat retaining device comprising a member engageable between the sweat band and the crown, said member having a passage 0r tunnel therethrough, and a strip of elastic having its ends passed through said passage or tunnel from opposite directions whereby the elastic is detachably and ad justably associated with the hat.

2. A hat retaining device comprising a member having a passage or tunnel therethrough, and a strip of elastic having its tends passed through said passage or tunnel from opposite directionsto maintain the elastic strip in looped form for encircling the head of the wearer.

A hat retaining device comprisinga member having a passage or tunnel therethrough, and a strip of elastic having its ends passed through said passage or tunnel from opposite directions to maintain the elastic strip in looped form for encircling the head of the wearer, said member constimeans for tuting means for detachably associating the elastic strip with the hat.

4. A hat retaining device comprising a member havinga passage or tunnel therethrough, and a strip of elastic having its ends passed through said passage or tunnel from opposite directions to maintain the elastic strip in looped form for encircling the head of the wearer, and a bowed resilient element with its medial portion passing through the tunnel or passage, the opposite ends of said element bearingv against the innersides ofthe head receiving opening for connecting the device with the hat, the said member being insertable between the sweat band and the crown to further serve as preventing displacement of'the OTTO H.
