Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROBERT BELDA-M, a subject of the King of England, residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Semimctallic Packings, of which the followin" is a specification.
This invention is for improvements in or relating to semi-metallic packings, that is to say packings comprising in combination a flexible composition s tripformed with an open channel extending inwardly from one face of the strip and longitudinally thereof, and metal filling blocks disposed in thechanno]. The flexible strip may be of the usual asbestos composition of known type.
According to the'present invention in such a melting the metal filling blocks together su stantially fill the channels and each of the blocks is formed with a spike or spikes driven into the bottom wall of the channel to retain the blocks in position within the channel.
Preferably the channel is formed with side walls which are. inclined outwardly from the lateral margins of the bottom wall, and those surfaces of each block which engage with the walls of the channel are shaped to conform to the configuration of the'walls.
A feature of. the invention comprises a filling blockthe cross-section of which, in a plane transverse to the length of the channel, is such 'as either to fill substantially half the 3 cross-section of the channel or to fill suhstanv tially the whole cross-sectionthereof.-
According to another feature of the invention a block is formed with a middle portion of such cross-section as substantially to 4 fill the whole cross-section of the channel and with projections on each side of the middle portion to extend longitudinally! of the .channel on opposite sides of the centre line thereof each projection being such as to fill substantially half the cross-section of the channel, and with a spike extendingonly fromthe. middle portion. 7 Thus, the block is stopped in cross-section.
Other features of the invention comprise the formation of the filling blocks with a shoulder to be seated on the bottom wall. of the channel, and b the curving of the bears ing faces of the b ocks and the rounding of be that of the len 'ture of a part with which the packing is to the part upon which they bear.

Some preferred forms of the invention will-now be described in detail by way of enample only and with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of the flexible strip;

In a modified form of block shown in Figure 5, two spikes 3 are provided and the block is of such cross-section as to substan-' 'ections. In the modification shown in Figure 6,
the whole block is carried down to a-pointed or spiked extremity 3 without the formation of any shouldered surface corresponding to the surface 7 previously described. This block also has a dished bearing surface 5 and rounded corners 6.
Obviously the blocks illustrated in Figures 5 and (i could each be formed in two portions to lie side by side within the channel in a similar manner to the blocks described in connection with Figures 2, 3 and 4.

It is obvious that when a pluralit of them blocks are driven into the chann of the strip 1 the side pro- ]ectlon of'one block will fit in the space aflorded between the adjacent side projectioniof the block next to it and of the wall of the channel so that in the entire le h of the strip the channel is substantially ed with metal.
It will be obvious that in addition to the forms described other forms of block could be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
.What I claim as an invention and desire to secure by, Letters atent is:-

A semi-metallic packing, comprising, in combination, a single fiexib e composition strip having formed therein-an open channel extending inwardly from one face of it andlongitudinally thereof, with the side, walls of the channel diverging outwardly from the lateral margins of the bottom wall thereof, and a plurality of similar metal filling'blocks positioned in said 0 n chanlling the channel, each of said filling blocks being formed with at least .one spike projecting beyond the main body thereof and driven into the bottom wall of the channel. without clenching to retain the blocks in position in the channel, the surfaces of block'which engage the walls of the channel being shaped to conform to the configuration of said walls.

A metal filling-block which is for use with a semi-metallic packing comprising an open channelled flexible composition strip and a plurality of similar filling-blocks which together substantially fill the channel the said block being of wedge formation an formed with a bearing face which is dished in a direction which will be that of the length of the channel when the block is in position, and provided with a spike adapted to be driven into the flexible composition 0 the strip without clenching, for the purpose described.
7. A metal filling-block which is for use with a semi-metallic packing comprising a channeled flexible composition strip and a plurality of similar filling-blocks which together substantially fill the channel, the said block being formed with those of its butting corners at the mouth of the channel rounded oil, for the purpose described.
8. A metal filling-block which is for use with a semi-metallic packing comprisin a channelled flexible composition strip an a plurailty of similar filling-blocks which together substantially fill the channel, the said block having a middle portion of such cross-section as substantially to fill the whole cross-section of the channel and projections one on each side of the middle portion to extend longitudinally of the channel on opposite sides of the centre line thereof and ofsuch cross-section as to fill substantially half the cross-section of the channel, and at least one spike adapted to be driven into the flexible body of the packing, for the purpose described.
9. A metal filling-block which is for use with a semi-metallic packing comprisin a channelled flexible composition strip an a plurality of similar filling-blocks which together substantially fill the channel, the said block having a middle portion of such crosssection as substantially to fill the whole which together substantially fill the channel,
