To zZ/l om zi may concern.
Be it known that l, Vlj lfloY, citizen of the United ftates, residing,` at Parkersiurg, in the county of Tlllood and State of llest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Chain `Fasteners, o hich the following is a specification. invention 'relates to improved fastening for non-skid chains or 'other flexible elirncrts and seeks, as one of its principal objects, to provide a kdevice which may be ctli'ectuafly locked against accidental release while, when desired, the device may be easily and quickly disengaged. T he inven tion has as a further object to provide a device wherein endwise pullor tension upon the device will serve to maintain the device locked. v
.find the invention has as astill further object to provide a. device lwhich will be characterized by structural simplicity, which will not be liable to break or get out of order, and whichwill be adapted for a wide range of use.
@ther land incidental objects will appear hereinafter. n
ln the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved :fastening showing the device locked.
Figure `2 is a sectional view also showing the' device locked.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, showing the manner in which the device is released.
Tfigure 4 is a Jcop plan View of the device, the cover employed being in section, and
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view showingq the body member of the device.
ln carrying the invention into effect, l employ a flat body member bent over at one end to provide a boss 11 preferably secured by a rivetl 12 and formed in said boss at its forward end is a squared notch 13. ln advance of said notch, the body member is provided with a loi'igitudinally directed slot 'ld while near its forward end said inember is cut away from the upper edge thereof to deline an upwardly presented hook 15 at the forward terminal of the member. In the :fear of said hook. the body member is provided with a vertically disposed shoulder 16 and sloping from the upper end of said shoulder rearwardly to the upper edge of` the member is an inclined face 17.
congunction with the body member, f oloy lat-ch 1&1 cut its lower edge to provide ay downwardly presented hook 15% ln the rear of said hook, the inembeiv is provided with an inclined face 2O sloping downwardly and rearwardly to the lower edge of the member and formed on said member at .its inner end is a lug 21 adapted to lit in the notch 13 of the boss l1 of the body member. Extending; through the member 18 and freely through the slot lll `of the member 10 is a bolt or other suitable fastening` device 22 slidably and pivotally connecting the latch member with the body member; y
Pivoted upon the holt 22 is a channel shaped cover 23 `adapted to snugly fit over the forward ends of the members 10 and 18,
the sides of the cover being formed to receive the bolt therethrough. Near the forward end of the cover, the sides thereof are provided with oppositely disposed notches 2li having; rounded rear walls A25 curving downwardly and rearwarcv lyto the lower edges of said sides, and looped at its ends about the enrl portions ,of the boltu to overlie the sides of the coveris a link 26 of a. chain, the link at the opposite end of the chain beine; indicated at 27. f
ln use, the link 2G is ,grasped and pressed forwardly for riding ,the bolt l22 forwardly within thevslot 111 of 'the body bar 10 and accordingly shifting the latch member 18 forwardly upon the body member whenv as suggested in Figure 3, the latch member,- with the cover 23, may be swung` upwardly to clear the hook 15. Accordingly, the link 27 may 'then be engaged with said hook when the latch member is then again closed downwardly to enga-,ege the hook 19 thereof through said link. The cover 23 is then closeddownwardly over said hooks.l the link 27 being received through the notches 24: in the sides of the cover. ,A slight pull in opposite directions is then exerted upon the links 26 and 27 for again shifting the latch member 1S rearwardly upon the body niember 10 to engage the lugl 21 of the latch member in the notch 13 of the boss l1. Thus the fastening is engaged with the link 27, the link being confined between the latch member and the body member 10 to engage the hooks 15 and 19 thereof, it being observed that when the latch member is closed, said hooks register at their inner edejes. ljull in opposite directions upon the links 26 and 27 will, of cou'=' ,ieri/e to exert a `ing the cover upwardly, the link shifting into engagement with the stop shoulder 16 for limiting the body member 10 against forward movement. link 26 is advanced, the latch member 18 will, as shown in Figure 3, be shifted for- Wardly upon the body member l() to disengage the lug 21 of the latch memberfrom within the notch 13, While the inclined face 20 of the latch member vvill be coincidentally advanced over the link 27 for rocking the free end of the latch member upwardlyu As the movement of the links 26 and 27 towards each other is then continued, the link 27 will be caused to ride out of engagement with the shoulder 16 up the .inclined face 1"? of the body member to complete the upward swinging movement of the latch member to open position, the cover 23, of course, being swung upwardly With the latch member. Thus, the fastening may be released with a minimum of difficulty.
Having thus described the what isclaimed as neuT is:
1. A device of the character described including a body member provided with a notch, a latch Vmember having a lug, and
invention,
means pivotally mounting the latch member Accordingly, as the Lasagna and slidable upon the body member for shifting -the latch member to engage the lug thereof in said notch locking the latch against pivotal movement.
2. A device of the character described including' a body member providedat one side thereof with a boss having a notch in its forward edge, the body member being formed with a longitudinally directed slot, a latch member provided at its rear end with a lug, and a bolt pivotally mounting' the latch member extending freely through said slot slidably supporting the latch menber for endivise movement to 'engage the lug thereof in said notch locking the latch against pivotal movement.
3. VA device of the character described including a. body member, a latch member, means pivotally mounting one of said meinbers and slidable upon the other of said members for shifting the pivoted member into engagement vvith the other of said members locking the pivoted member against pivotal movement, and a cover pivoted upon said means normally fitting over the latch and body members.
1. A device of the character described including aV body member provided With a notch, a latch member slidably and pivotally connected With the body member and provided With a lug projecting from the rear end of the latch, and means slidablv and pivotally connecting the latch with the body member, the latch being shiftable to engage said lug in said notch locking the latch independent of said means against pivotal movement. y
In testimony whereof lattix mv signature.
