To all 10 hem it may concern Be it known that I, CHRIsrorHnn C. ANDnnsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Electric Starter, of which the following is specification.
This invention has reference to electrically controlled starting devices to be employed in connection with internal combustion engines for imparting the initial movement to the engine.
The primary object of the invention is to provide novel means, whereby the starting pinion may be manually moved into mesh with the teeth of the fly wheel of the motor, while the pinion is in an inactive position.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for simultaneously completing circuit to the motor controlling the operation of the pinion, when the teeth of the pinion are properly meshed with the teeth of the fly wheel.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for manually controlling the electric circuit to the starting motor.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a starter constructed in accordance with the present invention and disclosing the pinion thereof in mesh with the teeth of a fly wheel of an internal combustion engine.
Figure 2 is an elevational view disclosing the starting pinion in its inactive position.
Referring to the drawings in detail,.the reference character 5 designates the fly wheel of an internal combustion engine, the
same being provided with peripheral teeth 6 to be engaged by the teeth of the starting pinion 7 in a manner to be hereinafter more fully described.
The reference character 8 designates a supporting arm which is disposed adjacent to the fly wheel 5 and is formed with a pivot 9 for pivotally supporting the starting 1922. Serial No. 558,259.
motor 10. which is shown as provided with a flange 11 formed with an opening to accommodate the pivot 9 for pivot-ally supporti g the motor.
Associated with the supporting arm 8 is a bracket 12 which may form a part of t e support ng frame oi the internal comtion en ine, the bracket 12 being formed with an opening to accommodate the bolt 13 which is insulated fron'i the bracket 12 as by means of the insulating material 1-1. This bolt 13 is provided with a head 15 at one and th 2 f. the opposite end supporting the sed nuts 16. between which the terminal 1': or the electric wire 18 is held.
The wire 18 has connection with the switch member 19. which in turn is in circuit with the battery 20 through the wire 21. it. suitable manually operated switch. 22'is interposed between the wires 18. and 21, whereby the circuit through the wires 18 and 21 may be controlled at the will of the operator.
The wire provides the circuit between the battery 20 and the arm 8, suitable means not shown being provided for establishing communication between the motor 10 and aria 8, whereby the coils of the motor may be energized when the circuit is completed therethrough.
Disposed adjacent to the motor is an arm 24 which is formed with a curved extremity designed to engage one wall of the motor and form a rest for the motor to restrict movement thereof when the motor is in its inactive position or out of use.
An apertured ear 25 is formed on the motor casing 10, which apertured ear accommodates one end of the coiled spring 26 which has its opposite end anchored in any suitable manner to cause the spring 26 to be put under tension when the motor has been moved to bring the teeth of the pinion 7 into mesh with the teeth 6 of the fly wheel 5 Thus it will be seen that as the pressure employed for moving the motor 10 to its active postion. is relieved, the reaction of the spring 26 will act to return the motor to its normal or inactive position where the same is held against the arm 24.
A contact member 27 is formed on the motor casing and is located with such rela tion to the member 15 that when the motor is manually moved to its active position, the contact member 27 will engage member 15 completing the circuit to the coils of the motor and causing the rotation of the starting pinion 7 for imparting the initial move ment to the internal combustion engine associated therewith.
Formed adjacent to the face of the motor, is an ear 28, to which the operating rod 22) is connected, the operating rod 29 having a pedal not shown, at the outer or free end thereof, whereby the operator may by exerting a pressure on the pedal move the motor 10 to its active postionn In order that the contact between the iember 27 and member 15 will be insured, a coiled spring 30 is provided on the bolt 13, which spring member is energized so that when the'memher 27 engages therewith, the spring will complete the circuit to the motor, prior to the engagement oi" the members 15 and 27.
In the use of the device, the switch mem ber 22 is moved to complete a circuit through the wires 18 and 21. \Vith the circuit completed at this point, the rod 99 is moved to bring the starting pinion 7 into proper mesh with the teeth 6 of the fly wheel 5.
After the teeth of the pinion 7 have been moved to mesh with the teeth of the fly wheel 5, the circuit is completed to the motor, to the end that the pinion 7 is revolved, imparting the necessary rotalv movement to the fly wheel 5 for starting the internal combustion engine ot which the fly 'wl eel is a part.
