WASHING Macninn.
riginal application filed I ulyi, 1,920, Serial No. 398,678
Divided,andthisapplication led September 2, 1921. Serial No. 498,113.
T o all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HOWARD F. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Newton, in the county of Jasper and tate of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates primarily, though not exclusively, to small machines particularly adapted for the doing of small washings, such as handkerchiefs, stockings, and other small articles of clothing and is a division of my application Serial No. 398,678 filed July 24, 1920.
Among the objects of my invention are to provide a new type of machine adapted for use in apartments and other places of limited space, where existing machines are too cumbersome; to produce an' electrically driven washing machine, which can be sold at a comparatively small price, so as to be within the reach of the large majority of people; to produce a machine which may be used in connection with stationary water receiving equipment of a house or apartment; to provide a motor driven machine suitable for use by school girls, clerks, teachers, mothers, and others having small or fine washings to do, including such things as stockings, waists, lace curtains and childrens clothing; to provide a machine which can be easily so arranged that no carrying of water to or from the machine is necessary; to construct a machine such that it is unneceary for the user to 'at any time put her hands in the hot water in the machine; and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear.
My invention further resides in the combination, construction, and arrangement of arts illustrated in the accompanying drawlngs and while I have shown therein a preferred embodiment l desire the same to be understood as illustrative only and not as limiting my invention.
Tn the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevationA Fig.' 2 is a transverse mctional elevatlon of m present invention. l
lieferring more in detail to the drawings, numeral 1 designates in general the washing c linder of the washing machine comprising tlie body portion 2 and the cover 3 hinged at a and held in closed relation by a fastening ing connections 13 with the toothed flange 1 4, secured to or forming a part of the section 2 of the cylinder 1. It will be clear that this washing machine can be used in any 4 location desired and that, when one wishes to remove the water therefrom, it may be placed over any convenient water receiving receptacle, the cover. 3 opened and the cylinder turned until the water isemptied out through the casing 10 into the receptacle below the same. This casing l() will serve not only to support the rotating cylinder but also to prevent the splashing of water when the same is emptied from the cylinder. lt" will be clear from the drawing and the foregoing description that this machine is preferably made in a small size, particularly adapted for the washing of small articles of clothing, but, if desired, the same may be made in larger sizes adapted for the washing of larger articles.
It is o f course understood that the specific descriptlon of structure set forth above may be departed from without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in this specification and the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, I claimz- 1. n a machine of the character described, a supporting casing having legs and a permanently open bottom, operating means mounted upon the casing, a washing cylinder having trunnions extending Jfrom opposite facesthereoimounted within the casing and pivoted thereon, and connections between. the operating means and thefnylinder for turning the cylinder on its pivots.
2. In a machine of the character described, a casing open at top and bottom and adapted to be supported with its bottom opening Within a water receiving receptacle, a rotatable cylinder adapted to be pivoted within said casing adjacent the upper portion thereof and to be rotated therein, said cylinder, when closed. being watertight.
3. In a structure of the character described, an imperforate rotatable cylinder having a portion thereof capable of being Q memes openedoup to give assess to the nterior, said cylinder having oppostely projecting trunnions about which 1t may be turned, and a support upon and within which said eyln- 5 deris mounted to rotate, said support hav- Witnesses:
ing a, downwardly directed tapered portion B.' M. WINGS,
having an opening at the bottom thereof. A. M. BARRETI'.
.In witness whereof., hereunto subscribe my name to this specification in the-presence of two witnesses.
HOWARD u. SNYDER..
