FREDBIK LJUNGSTRM, OF LIDINGO-BREVIK, SWEDEN, ASSIGNOR T0 AKTIEBOLAGET LJUNGSTEMS ANGTURBIN, A CORPORATION, OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.
TURBINE-DRIVEN LOCOMOTIVE.
Application `filed. May 2,
To aZZ whom t may cof/wcm.'
Be it known that I, FREDRIK LJUNGSTRM, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Lidingo-Brevik, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turbine-Driven Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
It has previously been suggested in connection with turbine-driven locomotives to use two carriages of which the fore carriage supports a steam boiler and therear one a condenser pertaining to the locomotive. According to different constructions the driving turbine together with its mechanical power transmitting means has been located as a whole or a divided aggregate either on the boiler carriage or on the condenser carriage. It has however also been suggested to divide the turbine `aggregate into two or more aggregates placed in part on the boiler carriage and in part on the condenser carriage, the fo're and rear parts of said carriages having been designated as suitable places for said aggregates. Y At all events it has however been diiiicult to arrange guiding wheels in front of the driving wheels, in case the latter are located on the fore part of a carriage and particularly on the fore part of the condenser carriage.
This invention relates to an arrangement in locomotives consisting of two carriages, the driving aggregate being placed on the fore part of the rear carriage. The invention consists in this, viz, that some or all of 35 the fore wheels of the rear carriage are brought together as driving wheels in a bogie, which by means of a coupling arranged or a certain axis of rotation is connected with the carriage running before or its bogie, the latter thus serving as guiding earriage or guiding wheels of the machinery Ogle.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a locomotive constructed according to the invention and consisting of two coupled carriages, the driving machinery being located on the fore part of the rear carriage. Figs. 1 and 3 are side views of two embodiments of a locomotive according to the invention. Fig. 2 illustrates on a longer scale the couling used between the carriages shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 the coupling used between the carriages 1n Fig. 3.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 3, 1 designates the fore carriage supporting the steam boiler 1922. 'Serial No. 557,861.l
2 and the coal bunker 3. The rear carriage 4 supports an air-cooled condenser 5, an accumulating liquid receptacle 6 and the driving machinery 8 placed on the fore part 7 of the carriage, said machinery consisting in the present case of a turbine together with mechanical means transmitting power to the driving wheels 9.
In Fig 1 the fore carriage 1, the boiler carriage, is supported partly by the fore bogie 10 and partly by three other` pairs of wheels 11 which may be ,brought together in a bogie or rigidly )ournalled in the frame work. The rear carriage, the condenser carriage, is at its rear portion supported by a bogie 12. According to the invention all miv the driving wheels 9 of the fore part ofthe 'Y rear carriage are in this case brought together in a bogie 13 supporting the mechanical power transmittingl means aswell as the turbine, theflexible connection between the bogie 13 and the condenser 'receptacle 6 being locatedat the outlet of the turbine at 14. Obviously however the turbine may also be rigidly connected with the receptacle 6, the iexible connectionin such case being arranged in the mechanical power transmitting means.
Said machinery bogie 13 is coupled to the fore carriage, if the frame work 15 constitutes its truck, o'r to the bogie, if the frame work 15 constitutes a bogle pertaining to the boiler carriage. The wheels 11 of the fore carriage or-of its rear bogie form guiding wheels of the machinery bogie 13, in case the coupling device be so constructed that a certain axis of rotation is obtained.
In the last named figure and in Fig. 2 such a coupling of a well known and very simple type is illustrated, consisting of loops 17 and 18 respectively extending from the carriages and connected by a pin or bolt 16. The coupling permits the mutual turning of the carriages due to the curves and the like to take place about the axis 19.
Fig.4 3 illustrates how the bogie 13 is coupled to the frame work of the boiler carriage, although the rear part of this carriage is supported by a bogie 20. The bogie 13 is coupled to the carriage 1 by means of a coupling bringing about an axis of rotation between the carriages positioned outside the coupling, for instance at 21. Said coupling shown in Fig. '4 is lof well known type and consists of joints 22 connecting the carriages,
one joint 23 preventing the carriages from moving vertically in relation-to each other. Obviously the wheels of the boiler carriage serve also in this case asguiding wheels of the machinery bogie 13. In such case the guiding carriage ought to be provided with smaller wheels than the guided carriage.
According to the invention also other embodiments, than those described above may be imagined. rIihus for instance turbine aggregates may be placed on the rear bogie of the fore carriage While the same method of coupling is maintained.,
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a turbine driven locomotive including two carriages, wheels supporting said carriages and a coupling, an arrangement characterized by at least one pair of the fore wheels of the rear carriage being brought together as driving wheels in a bogie connected by means of a coupling with the carriage running before it which thus serves as guiding carriage for the bogie of the rear 25 carriage.
. menare 2. vAn arrangement according to claim 1 characterized by the rear Wheels of the fore carriage bein brought together in a bogie, the fore bogle of the rear carriage belng coupled to the frame of the fore carriage.
3. An arrangement according to claim 1 characterized by the fore bogie of the rear carriage supporting the mechanical means transmitting ower from the turbine yto the driving whee s.
4. An arrangement according to claim 3, characterized by the provision of a iieXible connection effectin transmission of power of the turbine to t e rear carriage.
5. An arrangement according to claim 1, characterized by the guiding carriage being provided with smaller wheels than the guided bogie.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
