It will be noted from the drawings that one roll of each pair is provided with heating means and that this is preferablythe `upper roll of one pair and the lower roll of the other pair. By this arrangement I give i a bill two successive ironings and beatings,
with heat applied directly to both sides of the bill` and at the same time use only two heating elements. The two rolls that have the heating means have their shafts 14 hollowy to carry bushings 21 and shafts 15 to support the heating elements; and although it is not necessary I have shown the other two rolls similarly equipped and the shafts l5 and bushings 21 in place, so that the onthe side wall of the case.

To permit feeding the bills into the machine and then gathering them after be* ing treated, two slots or openings are arranged in the case 11. The entrance opening is provided with ay substantially flat bot- Atorn 27 formed as a part of case 11 and eX- tending out from the case far enough to allow several bills to be `stacked ready to be inserted in the machine. This shelf or holder may be provided with suitable side plates 28. Bottom 27 passes within the case 11 and extends right up to the first pair of rolls to prevent the bills from falling before they engage the lower roll. A curved projection 29 extends inwardly and guides the bills into the first pair of rolls. Back of the last pair of rolls are somewhat similar projections. The upper projection 30j however, is made adjustable so that the distance between itself and the lower shelf 27a may be Ayaried. This adjustment is obtained by means' of screws 31 which are carried in slots formed in a side wall of the case, and are screw threadedly engaged to the projection 30. The outward extending portion of the lower projection 27a is somewhat shorter than that of the extending shelf 27. Guide plates 32 are arranged aboveand below the line of movement of the bills. These plates are held concentric with shafts 14C by supporting portions 33 which loosely lit these shafts at the ends of the rolls. Plates 32 are secured to-portions 33 bymeans of screws 32a. These plates are arranged so as to eX- tend between the rolls and parallel to the axis ofthe rolls, and to fit loosely but snugly between the upper rolls and likewise with the lower rollsj There are two of these plates 32, one between the lower rolls R and one between the upper rolls R. This feature prevents the bills from tending to cling to the rolls and revolve with them.
It is preferred. for mechanical conveniences, that each pair of rolls be driven at the opposite end to that which the other pair is driven. Upon shafts 14 are gears 34 which mesh with each other and cause the lower shaft to drive the upper shaft in each pair. Near gear 34 and upon the lower .shaft 14 of each pairis a slightly larger gear 35 which meshes with pinion 36 secured to drive shaft 23. All the upper and lower rolls are thus driven in the proper direction to feed the bills through the machine. It is preferred that the bills be fed;
through the machine lengthwise, and this aids in feeding the bills through the rolls, in that the maximum lengt-h assures one pair or both pairs of rolls constantly pulling the bills forward. Y

In combination, a frame including a heat insulatinfr casing, a pair of rolls within the casing, means rto direct articles through the casing; and between the rolls, one of the rolls being hollow and its peripheral wall being of heat conducting material. a heating element within the hollow roll close to its peripheral wall, and a heat insulating member within the heating' element.

In combination, a frame embodying a heat insulating casing, two parallel pairs of parallel rolls revolubly mounted in the casing in bearings thereon, the bearings of one roll of each pair being adjustable to adjust one roll of each pair toward peripheral contact with the other roll of the pair, the planes of the axes of each pair of rolls being transverse to the plane determined bv the said lines of contact, one roll of each pair, being rolls located-on opposite sides of the last mentioned plane, beiner hollow, hollow trunnions for the two hollow rolls, a stationary shaft extending through the hollow trunnions and rolls, a mounting member of heat insulating material on each shaft within the hollow roll, an annular heating' element around said member close to the peripheral wall ofthe roll, which peripheral wall is ofl heat conducting material; and means to rotate the pairs of rolls to feed an article between them.

In combination a frame embodying a heat insulating casing, two parallel pairs of parallel rolls revolubly mounted in the casing' in bearings therein, the bea-rings of one roll of each pair being adjustable to adjust one roll of each pair toward peripheral contact with the other roll ofthe pair, the planes of the axes of each pair of rolls being transverse to the plane determined by the two said lines of contact, one roll of each pair. being rolls located on opposite sides of the last mentioned plane, being hollow. hollow trunnions for the two hollow rolls, a stationary shaft extendingthrough the hollow trunnions and rolls, amounting member of heat insulating material on each shaft within the hollow roll, an annular heating element around said member close to the peripheral wall of the roll, whichperipheral wall is of heat conducting material; means to guide an article through the case along the last mentioned plane, and means to rot-ate the rolls.

In combination, a frame embodying a heat insulating casing, two parallel pairs of parallel rolls revolubly mounted in the casiup; in bearings thereon, the bearings of one Vroll of each pair being adjustable to adjust one roll of each pair toward peripheral contact with the other roll of the pair, the planes of the axes of each pair of rolls being transverse to the plane determined by the two said lines of Contact, one roll of each pair, being rolls located on opposite sides of the last mentioned plane, being hollow, hollow trunnions for the two hollow rolls, a

In combination, a frame embodying a heat insulating casing, two parallel pairs of parallel rolls revolubly mounted in the casingin bearings thereon, the bearings of one roll of each pair being adjustable to adjust one roll of each pair toward'peripheral contact with the other roll of the pair, the planes of the axes of each pair of rolls being transverse to the plane determined by lthe two said lines of contact, one roll of cach pair, being rolls located on opposite rolls, a stationary shaft'extending through the hollow trunnions and rolls, a mounting` member of heat insulating material on each shaft within the hollow roll, an annularv heating element around said member close to the peripheral wall of the roll, which peripheral wall is of heat conducting material; means to rotate the rolls, land means! to ,guide articles between the rolls embodying members lying on opposite sides of the last mentioned plane and supported at their ends upon the rolls. In a device of th-e character described, two pairs of parallel rolls arranged in substantiallyv quadrilateral formation when viewed from theirends; shafts for the rolls projecting from their ends, bearings for the shafts, and v.Q'uide means to guidel an article across the space between the pairs ofy rolls Y embodying a pair of guide memberseach lying close to a roll of each pair, and supporting means for the guide member at their ends embodying extensions which engage around the roll shafts.
