Description

S. P. CALTRIDER ET AL POULTRY FOUNTAIN Jul 3, 1923. 1,4 0,702
Filed Feb. 28, 1922 Patented July 3, 1923.
Pam T SAMUEL P. oan'rarnnn nine wer r. sAUBLn' or wasmmma; amas,
i .lULTRY FonNTAiNF lfpplication'fil'ed Eebruary zaieza' selfiaklld. 54ml;
TojaZZ whom it may concern x Be 'itknown thatwe, SAMUEL 'P.ICALT v RIDER and PE ER P; SAUnLn'fcitizensbfthe United States, residingat' WVestminster, in
the county of Carroll and State of'Maryland, have invented certain new and 'usefi'il' Improvements in- Boultry'Fountains, of which the following is a specificatiOm r This invention relates to improvements in poultry fountains, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and efiicient sanitary fount ain which will accommodate a number of'fowls at one nmea'nd which .is'
provided with a self feeding fountain that can be refilled without tilting or without removal from the outer or drinking receptacle. to provide a fountain that can be' readily removed for the purpose of cleaning the drinking receptacle;
' The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter more fullyv set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is aside elevation of our invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the outer or drinking receptacle and hood, and showing the position of the removable fountain therein.
Figure 3 is a detail vertical longitudinal section of the removable fountain.
Figure 4 is an enlarged plan view of the discharge end of the fountain.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and inwhich like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the outer or drinking receptacle, which is provided with a number of elongated openings 2 in the side wall thereof, through which the fowl are enabled to drink, the water level being shown in Figure 2 and indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1. The removable fountain 3 is provided with an annular flange 4 which rests over the upper edge of the outer or drinking receptacle 1. The upper end of the said fountain 3 is provided with an opening 5 having an externally threaded neck 6 adapted to receive the internally threaded cap 7. Between the upper end of the neck 6 and the cap 7 is a rubber gasket 8to form an air-tight joint between the said neck and cap. The lower A further object of the invention is portion'of the fountaini3is contracted. and
tapered and provided in 'its'lower' end; with a'central aperture 9 and two discharge apertu'res -10 through which latter the water flows froin'the fountain3 tothe Qumran drinking f'receptacle l' "The" level is maintained at the'lower'en dof thefolllitail t i 3, as indicated in' Figurei2'," ;n account of the i said romain being 'air tight'l Tat its ;'upper end and the water'in the receptacle 1' form ing aseal at'theflower 'end. [Projecting through the aperture 1 9' is a rod. 11 having a' metal disk 12011 its lower end and a rubber disk 13 just above and, resting upon said metal disk 12. To the upper end of the rod 11 is secured one end of a coiled spring 14 and to the upper end of said spring 14 is 'connected a chain 15, which latter has its upper end connected'to the cap 7. Within the neck 6 is an inwardly projecting hook 16 over whichthe chain is caught when the v fountain is being filled. When it is desired to refill the fountain 3, the cap 7 is removed from the neck' 6- and the'rodll'israised by means of the chain 15 until the rubber disk 13 is tight against the discharge endof the fountain 3 and closes the apert'ures 10. The chain 15 isthen drawn up;
tight against the action of the coil d Spring 14 and caught over the hook 16. The water.
is then poured through the neck 6 until the fountain 3 is filled The vchain 15 is-then I i v unhoo-ked and-the rod llallowedto drop which uncovers the apertures 10 and allows the water to flow into the outeror drinking receptacle 1.
The cap 7 is screwed down tight on the neck 6 and the rubber gasket 8 forms an air-tight ioint between the: said neck and cap, which maintainsthe water lever inthe said drinking receptacle as'indicated on the drawing. The said drinking receptacle is also provided with arms. 17
nearits upper end, in whichrests the lower edge of the hood 18. The said hood; 18 projects over the sidewall of the drinking receptacle 1 and prevents water and dirt from running down the outer side wall and into the openings-2' and coming into contact with the water in the drinking recep-' The hood 18 oan'be remo vedand- I used as afunnel in refilling the founta1n'3,

by placing thesmall end into the neck 7.-
.It will thus be seen from the foregoing that the fountain 3 can berefilledwithout removal from the drinking receptacle 1, or without tilting the saidfountain.
Slight alterations in the construction andarrangements of the parts may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, withoutdeparting from the spirit of our present invention. a
Having thus described our invention, what I We claim is:
1. A poultry fountain comprising an outer receptacle having a number of openings in its side wall, a removable fountain within said outer receptacle and having an intake opening in its'upper end and a discharge opening in itslowerend acap to close the intake opening, meansconnected with said cap to close the discharge {opening of said fountain, arms projeeting fromthe upper edge of the outerreceptacle, and ahood resting upon said armsand above the inner andouter receptacles.
2.. A poultry fountain comprising an outer receptacle having a number of openings in its side wall, a removable fountain having an intake opening in its upper end and an annula -flange adapted torest upon the up per edge of the outer receptacle and a contracted tapered lower portion provided with a central aperture and two discharge openings in its lower end, a cap toclosethe said intake opening, arod projecting through the central aperture in the lower end of the said removable fountain and having a disk thereon adapted to; close the discharge openiii-g of said fountain means eonneetingthe 1 said rod and cap for raising said rod to close the said discharge openingiarms projecting from the upper edge of the, outer receptacle, and a hood having its lower edge resting in said arms and covering the outer receptacle and the removable fountain,-
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
