UNITED STATES HAYES C. STEVENS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
'rrmswnrrnn ATTACHMENT.
Application filed April 6, 1921.
Toallw/wmitma concem:
Be it known t at I, Hares C. S'rsvmvs, a citizen of-the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of All gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriter Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriter attachments, and more particularly to typewriter attachments wherein provision is made for feeding a continuous strip or strips of paper from a roll or rolls direct. to the typewritin machine.
While not imited thereto, this attachment is especially adapted for writing tele Serial No. 458,898.
in the upper edge of the head portions 4.
Two other tie rods 11 and 12 extend transversely between the arms? and 6 respectively, and are mounted in slots 13 adgrams and hasfor one of its objects the? the f s d of d armsn h r provision of a mechanism which will enable the operator to write the original and carbon copy on continuous sheets without having to stop to change sheets, or to insert carbons, all as will more fully appear hereinafter.
Another object is to provide means whereby the sheets or telegrams may be severed from the rolls when desired.
A further object is to provide an attachment of thecharacter described which shall be of simple construction, durable, and comparatively inexpensive. which may be readily attached to typewriting machines in general use.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of an apparatus constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device ofFigure 1.
Figure 3 is a dtaibend elevation of the reel member upon which the carbon copy is adapted to be wound.
mugs 4 is a front elevation of a slightly modifiedform of attatllment.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the attachment shown in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is apartial top plan of the rerolling device and guides ,of the modified form.
Referring particularly to the drawings, the supporting frame is composed of two duplicate side members A and B each of which comprises a shank portion 2, a base portion 3, a head portion 4 of greater width than the shank portion. and a pair of vertically spaced rearwardly and downwardly directed arms 5 and 6.
tie rod 14 extends transversely between the side members A and B and is mounted in slots 15 formed in the shank portion 2 between the arms 5 and 6.
Each of the several tie rods is provided with a circumferential groove 16 so as to fit within their respective slots in the side members A and B and also forming shoulders adapted to abut each side face of the side members, thus holding them against sidewise movement relative to the rods.
A reel member C ex-tends transversely between the head portions 4 of the side members A and B, and comprises a central roller or shaft member 18 adapted to be detachably secured to stub shafts 19 and 20 journaled in bearings 21 and 22 secured to the side members A and B. respectively. The shafts 19 and 20 are slidably mounted in the bearings 21 and 22 and are held in engaged position witn .the roller or shaft member 18 by springs 23 and 24. respectively.
A plurality of radially extending spring fingers 25 are mounted around the outer periphery of the member 18 adjacent each end and are adapted to engage and hold a cylindrical core 26, of paper or the like, on which a carbon copy is adapted to be wrapped. The shaft 19 is provided with a sprocket member 19' on its outer end adapted to be connected by a suitable sprocket chain with a sprocket 19 on the shaft of the platen member 33 of a type writer so that the reel C is driven as the platen 33 is rotated.
A knife member D is pivotally mounted on the side members A and B adjacent their lower end and comprises a U-shaped mem her having its closed side 27 forming a blade and its arms 28 and 29 are each provided with a slot. 30 and are each pivotally mounted on a bolt 31 extending through the slot 30 and through a vertically extendin slot 32 in the side members A and B. t will thus be seen that the knife member D may be adjusted toward or away from the side members A and B, and is also angularly and vertically adjustable relative to said side members.
In the drawings I have shown the platen 33 of a typewriter in combination with my apparatus, for purpose of illustration.
In operation, a roll of paper or telegram blanks 35, for original copies, is mounted on the tie rod l2 and has its loose end trained up and over the paper guide 7 of the typewriter, then down under the platen 33 and up under the closed side or blade 27 of knife member D. A second roll of paper or telegram blanks 36 for carbon copies is mounted (mi the tie rod 14 and has its loose end trained down between the end of the paper or blanks from the roll 35 and the platen 33 thence up around the platen and up to the reel C to which it is secured.
A continuous carbon sheet 37 is interposed between the sheets 35 and 36 of blanks and extends up and over the tie rods 8 and 9 and under rod 11 and is adapted to be rotated as the paper or blanks are advanced.
When the operator turns the platen to advance the paper for a new line of writing the chain and sprocket connection with the reel C will drive to wind up the carbon copy, and when the writing is complete the operator will tear off the original or first sheet by engaging it with the blade 27 of knife member D.
In Figures 4 to 6 I have shown a modified form of my invention, the same reference numerals being used to designate the parts that are common with the preferred construction. The side members A. and B are composed of a shank 40, a rearwardly somewhat extended arm 41, and a base 40 secured by bolts 7 to the paper guide 7. A
tie rod 42 extends transversely between the shank portions of the members A and B and is secured in slots 43. A second tie rod 44 extends between projections 45 formed on the lower edge of the arms 41 and is secured in slots 46. The knife D is mounted adjacent the lower end of the members A and B as in the preferred form.
The reel C extends transversely between the members A and B and is detachably secured to the stub shafts I9 and 20, however,
the shaft 20 is not slidably mounted in the bearing 22 as in the preferred form.
A spring retraction roller 48 is mounted in suitable bearings adjacent the rear end of the arms 41. The roller {8 may be of any desired construction but is preferabl in the form of the well known window shade roller and is adapted to have a carbon sheet 49 secured thert-to.
The roll of paper or telegram blanks 35 for original copies is mounted on the tie rod 44 and has its free end trained up and over the paper guide 7 of the typewriter, thence down under the platen 33 and up under the closed side or blade 27 of the knife member D. A second roll of paper or telegram blanks 36 for carbon copies is mounted on the tie rod 42 and has its loose or free end trained down between the end of the paper or blanks from the roll 25 and the laten 33 thence up around the platen 33 to t e reel C to which it is secured. V
The carbon sheet 449 secured to the retraction roller 48 extends forward between the paper 35 and 36 and is ulled forward against the spring tension of the roller 48 as the platen is rotated by the operator to advance the paper being written upon, the friction exerted by the typewriter mechanism against the pa ers being written upon being sufiicient for t is pur so. When the operator has finished writing he will release the friction mechanism of the typewriter and the roller 48 will retract the carbon paper to zero or normal position.
Various other modifications and designs will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in theart and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction shown and described.
I claim In a typewriter attachment the combinat on of a supporting frame having a pair of side members spaced apart, means on said attachment for supporting rolls of paper, a transversely extending reel mounted on stub shafts journaled in suitable bearings secured to said side members, said reel comprising a.transversely extending roller member, a
plurality of radially extending spring fingers mounted on said roller member, and an outer surrounding cylindrical core member supportedon said spring finger members and adapted to receive paper to be reeled thereon.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HAYES C. STEVENS.
