OF E laC E.
HIGEIWAY SIGN PAINT PROTECTOR.
Application filed August 25, 1922 'SeriaL No. 584,216.
To all whom it "may concern Be it known that I, JosnrH PERCY BELI- INGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and and useful Improvement in Highway-Sign Paint Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
It is customary to mark highways by painting the bases or lower parts of poles disposed along them. However, wood uices and extracts descending the poles, more especially in wet and rainy weather, stain conspicuous parts of the paint applied to the bases of poles marking highways. I
The principal objects of the present mvention are to prevent wood juices and extracts descending the poles from marring or staining conspicuous parts of the paint applied to the bases of the poles for the purpose of indicating highways and the like.
Another object of the invention 18 to pro vide a protector of the class referred to which shall be comparatively inexpensive, eflicient, easy of application, durable, and not unsightly. Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description at the end of which the invention will be claimed after having been first described in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which Figure 1 is a rear view of a portion of a post or pole equipped with a paint protector embodying features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the protector drawn to a somewhat enlarged scale, and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-et of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the protector for preventing descending wood juices and extracts from staining the conspicuous portions of the painted base parts 1 of posts 2 marking highways is provided with a passage-way or gap 3 for descending wood juices and extracts to an inconspicuous part of the painted base of the pole 2, for example, to the back of the pole or part of the pole whichdoes not face the highway. 'The protector is also provided with a gutter 4 arranged on opposite sides of and communicating with the gap or passage for deflecting descending Wood extracts and juices away from conspicuous-parts of thewpaint'ed base and to the gap or passage 3. As shown the protector comprises an arcuate segment of a circle 5 having its shorter curved edge folded for the reception of a tie or wire 6 which can be retained for purposes of handling and transportation by means of clips 7, Which hold the fold in turned down position. Tar paper or felt is a good material from which to make the protector, or more accurately, the part 5 thereof, and since this material is black it makes a good contrast with the painted portion 1 of the pole and thus a sightly appearance is presented. In applying the protector the gap or passage 8 is provided by making the part 5 of appropriate length and the wire 6 is placed around the pole and drawn tight as by twisting its ends together as indicated at 8. In this way a very tight joint can be made between the pole and the protector because the wire can be made in most cases to slightly embed the folded edge of the protector into the wood of the pole, but, if desired, some additional material, as tar or the like, can be poured into the cutter to insure a. tight joint. Such material is not shown because it can be readily understood without illustration and attempted illustration would merely cloud the drawings.
In use wood juices and extracts washed or absorbed from the pole and descending along with rain water are caught by the gutter 4: and diverted to the passage or gap 3 from which they are delivered to an inconspicuous part of the paint on the base of the pole so that resulting stains are not visible from the highway marked by the poles and the conspicuous parts of the paint on the poles which is visible from the highway is not stained and present-s a clean, readily visible appearance. 7
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited to such matters or otherwise than as the prior art and the appended claims may require.
I claim:
1. A protector for preventing descending Wood juices and extracts from staining the conspicuous portions of the painted base ing its ends arranged to provide a gap, and a tie arranged in the fold and adapted to span the gap, substantially as described.
3. A protector of the class described comprising an arcuate segmentof a circle having its shorter curved edge folded and having its ends arranged to provide a gap, a tie arranged in the fold and adapted to span the gap, and clips for the fold to retain the tie.
JOSEPH PERUY REMINGTON.
