RIM-STRAIGHTENING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, ALBERT J. DROLS- I-IAGEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in thecounty of Milwaukeeand State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rim-Straightening Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in rim expanding .and contracting machines, and relatesparticularly to that type of machines which are used in repair shops for the purpose of assisting in theplacing and removing of a tire from a transversely-split, contractible vehicle-wheel rim.
The object of my invention is'to provide a machine of the character set forth, which iscapable of adaptation to all sizes and types of rims adapted to receive therein pneuinatic tires.
It is also an'object of my invention to provide means adapted'to be attachedto' the end of the movable arm for thepurpose of straightening distorted or bent rims.
A'further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character set forth, wherein the parts are constructed with a view of reducing the cost of manufacture, and at the same'time retain'those features, by which safety, durability ease of assembling and operation are secured.
With such ends in view, my invention resides in the novel construction to be herein after considered and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of the machine, showing the rim-engaging arms and operating means,
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view of one of the rigid arms of the machine.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 5, showing the preferred form of the rim-engaging member at the end of the movable arm.
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 4, showing the attachment for straightening distorted or bent rims applied in its proper place, and
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view on the line 6-6 of Figure 5, showing the structure of the roller mounting.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a tubular post made of suitable material, preferably metal, and having the enlarged base 2 provided with openings through which passes means for securing the base to the floor. The upper end of the post 1 terminates into ahorizontal tubular member 3, having made integral therewith the outwardly extending arms 4 and 5, each being braced to the tubular member 3 by the webs 6.
The outer ends of the arms 4 and 5 have rotatably mounted therein the vertically ertending rollers 7, the lower' journals of which are formed in the outwardly extending portions 8 of the arm 4. The portions 8 have arranged thereon, adjacent their ends, the clencher-members 9 which are designed to engage a rim when contracting, the same, while the rollers 7 are adapted for engagement with the inner wall of the rim when it is desired toeXpand' the same. F urthermore, if the diameter of the rim is such that the machine will not operate successfully when expanding a rim, by placing the inner wall of the rim in contact with the rollers 7, the inner wall of the rimmay be placed against the clencher member 9 with the rim supported by the end portion of the members 8.
The horizontal tubular member 3 has rotatably mounted therein the screw-threaded shaft 10 which is held in place by means of the ring or flange 11, which is secured to the shaft 10 by a suitable locking pin 12. The ring 11 rotates within a cut out portion arranged in the tubular member 3 and the webs 6. The end of the shaft 10, adjacent the locking element, has keyed thereto a hand-operating wheel 9, while the other end of the haft fits within a threaded sleeve 13 adapted to be moved back and forth within the member 3 by the rotation of the shaft 10 in the direction desired.
The outer or free end of the sleeve 13 has made integral therewith the vertically extending rim-engaging wall 14, the lower end of which terminates into a clencher member 15 adapted to engage the rim when it is desired to contract same, while the upper end terminates into a second clencher member 16. If desired, the. upper portion of the wall 14 may have therein a slot, as indicated. in Figure 4, by the numeral 17, in which the clencher member 16 may be 7 thereby preventing the twisting or further moved up and down. By this structure, it willbe apparent that when the clencher members 15 and 16 are in engagement with the sides ofa rim, which is desired to be contracted, the pull will be upon both sides,
distortion of the rim.
As shown in Figures 4 and 5,. I have further provided the end of the sleeve 13 with a socket 18 in which is adapted to be placed the connecting means of an, arm 19, the ends of which are provided with rim-engaging rollers, similar to those in the stationary arms, which will engage the rim for the purpose of straightening distorted or bentrims, 7
By referring to this structure in detail, the curved arm 19 has secured thereto or made integral therewith a plug or disk 20 which is adapted to be inserted within the socket 18 of the sleeve 13. The ends of the arm 19 have riveted or secured in any suitable manner thereto a roller carrying member 21, made in substantially a T-shape,
one side of which straddles the arm 19;
while the other side has rotatably mounted thereon the roller 22. I
Assuming that it is desired to remove a pneumatic tire-casing from a split rim, the two are placed upon the machine and resting on the portions 8 of the stationary arms 4: and 5, and the rim is engaged by the hooks 15 and 16, or 15 and 16, as shown in the preferred form, and as the arm 10 is moved inwardly, the clencher members 9, 15, 16 or 16' will engage the rim and contract same to such extent that will be sufficient to permit the ready removal of the tire-casing therefrom. It will be apparent that when the preferred form is used, as shown in Figure 4, by reason of the hooks 15 and 16 have opposite engagement with the rim, the latter is prevented from twisting or becoming distorted as the movable arm is drawn inward.
After the tire-casing or the proper repairs have been made the rollers 7 and the wall 14 are brought into engagement with the rim and the arm 13 moved outwardly, thus forcing or expanding the rim into proper operative relation to the tire-casing, whereupon its two end may be locked together. V
Furthermore, assuming that the rim has become slightly bent or distorted, the attachment as shown in Figure 5 is applied to the movable arm, the rim is then placed upon the machineand engagedby the rollers 7 of the stationary arms, and therollers 22 of the movable arm thus giving the rim a four point contact and upon which the rim is rotated until it assumes its normal shape. 7
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advan tages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, with out further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An attachment for a machine of the class described having stationary arms and a movable arm adapted to support thereon a rim, a curved plate, a socket in the end of said movable arm adapted to receive therein the intermediate portion of said plate, and means at the ends of said plate for engagement with the inner side of a rim when straightening the same.
