IMPROVEMENT lN SHIRT BUTTONS OR STUDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,948, dated December 30, 1873; application filed September 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J. HOLMES, of Maiden, of the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirt Buttons or Studs; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a transverse section, of one construction of a shirtstud provided with my invention.
Shirt-studs and neck or sleeve buttons, as usually made, generally work loosely in the button-holes of the shirt, in consequence of which they are liable to be lost out of the holes, or to soil the linen or surfaces contiguous thereto. The object of my invention is to provide a clamping stud or" button, which, while firmly holding the two thicknesses of the shirtbosom together, shall not be liable to become detached by the separation of its parts.
In the drawings, A denotes the stud formed in the usual way with a shank, a, and two heads, I) c.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the shank a is represented as having a male screw, 61, out upon it, and a clamp-nut or disk, 0, screwed thereon, it being between the two heads and milled on its circumference. This disk is prevented from becoming detached from the button by the heads I) and c, which are rigidly attached to the shank a.
It will readily be seen that a stud provided with a clamping device, as exhibited in the figures, can readily be clamped or held firmly in position when in a shirt-button hole or holes, the clamp-disk operating with the rear head to fix the stud in place.
I claim as my invention' A clamping shirt stud or but-ton, consisting of the screw-shank a, the heads b and c fixed on either end of the shank, and the clampingdisk 6, constructed, combined, and operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
