Application filed September 14, 1922. Serial No. 588,106.
To all whom it may conoem:
Be it known that I, WLULiZiM A. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residin in the city and county of Philadelphia, tate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Heat-Focusing Device for Combined Electric Lamps, Heaters, and Blowers, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a novel construction of a heat focusing device or telescopic casing for combined electric lamp, heaterand blower and consists of a novel collocation of an electric heater and an electric blower located 1n proximity thereto in con- 1 junction with electric'lighting devices and an outer casing or lamp shade telescopically supported with respect to the open ended guard which may enclose and support the electric heater, whereby the heat emanating from the heater can be directed or focused upon any desired point upon adjusting telescopically the outer casing or cylinder, the heating and blowing devices and their adjuncts being preferably adjustably. mounted on a suitable support, so as to focus the heat upon the desired point.
It further consists of ther novel features of construction and advantage; all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings, forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable as results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists may be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities. as. herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of a heat focusing device or telescopic casing and a combinedelectric lamp, heater 0 and blower to which the same is applicable embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents a lan view of Figure 1, with the lights omitted.
Figure 3 represents a sectional view, so partly in elevation of the device seen in Figure 1, showing the shade or outer casing in a horizontal plane.
Figure 4 represents a vertical sectional view of another embodiment of my invenll tion.
. light bulbs 20,
Figure 5 represents a plan view of Figure fl, with the lights omitted.
Figure 6 represents a sectional view of Figure 4, partly in elevation, showing the heater, blower and their adjuncts supported in a horizontal plane.
Figure 7 represents a side elevation partly in section of another embodiment of my invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings,
1 designates my novel construction of heat focusing device or telesco ic shade or caslng for a combined electric amp, heater and b ower, the same comprising'a standard, a support, or bracket 2, upon which one or more arms as 3 are pivotally supported at the point 4 by means of a threaded stem or bolt having a nut as 5 which can be tightened to lock the device in any desired position or at any desired angle.
The terminals of the arms 3 are flared out-r wardly as indicated at 6 and within them is supported the blower or motor casing 7 having a shaft of the usual character which is provided with the fan or blower 8.
The blower may be supported by any suitable means, as the upper and lower arms or brackets 9 and 10, and the outer terminals of the arms 6 are secured in any suitable manner to theopen ended uard 11, which is provlded at a plurality 0 points, as four, seen in Figure 2, with .the longitudinally extending grooves or seats '12, in which are seated the four slidably mounted rods 13.
The outer ends of the rods 13 pass through and are secured in or to the inwardly turned flanges 14 and 15 of the inner cylinder or casing 16, which is secured to the outer concentric cylinder 17 by means of the brackets, angle irons or their equivalents 18.
The inner cylinder 16 has the longitudinal recesses orcut out portions, as indicated at 19 (see Figure 3) to receive the electric which are supported in suitable sockets which me be attached to the outerflared portions 0 the arms 8.
21- designates an electric heater of any suitable or conventionalrtype which is suitably secured or supported within the guard 11, and connected with a source of electric energy by conductors of the usual character.
It will be understood from-Figures 1 and 2', th t the inner and outer cylinders 16 and" I1.
17, the brackets 18 and the rods 13 common to the flanges 14: and are movable'as a unit, with respect to the fixed guard as a unit, so that the outer cylinder 17 (which has the function of a" lamp shade, and may, if desired, be transparent or constructed 01' any suitable material,) together with the inner cylinder 16, is longitudinally ad ustable, since a pull upon the unit composed of the members 13, 16, 17 and 18 will enable the same to be drawn outwardly, the rods 13 sliding in their grooved seats 12 of the stationary open ended guard 11. By means of this construction the heat emanating from the electric heater 21 can be directed or focused upon any desired point, as is evident.
The ends of the rods 13 may be secured in the flanges 14 and 15 by. any suitable means, and the inner cylinder 16 may be of thin sheet metal, and the outer cylinder 17 may he of glass or metal or ii? desired may be a skeleton frame covered with silk, as is evifor supporting the, lamp and its adjunctsfrom the side wall of a room.
In Figure 3, I have shown the arms 3 as elongated and provided with a counterbalance 22, which has the dual function of counterbalancing the elements to the left of the fulcrum 4 and in addition said counterbalance absorbs the vibrations of the motor 7 so that the entire device is noiseless in operation and all vibration is eliminated.
In the construction seen in Figures 4 to Y 6, I have shown substantially the same collocation of the motor 7, fan or blower 8, guard 11 and rods 13 seated in the longitudinal grooves or seats 12 and slidable therein, but employ instead of the lurality of cylinders or casings 16 and 1 the single outer cylinder or casing 22", which may be made of metal or glass, so as to function as a lamp shade and is provided with the inturned flanges 23 and 24, in which the ends of the rods 13 are seated or secured in any suitable manner.
It will be apparent from Figures to 6,
that the outer cylinder'22" and the rods 13 seated in its inturned flanges 23 and 24 move as a un t, so that when a pull is exerted upon said outer cylinder 22, the latter and the guide rods 13 move as a unit with-1e spect to' the stationary guard 11, so that the heat emanating from the electric heater 21 garners can be directed or focused upon any desired point.
In the construction seen in Figure 7, I have shown the outer cylinder or shell 25 within which is, the guard 26, within which the electric heater 21 is supported, said guard 26 being open ended similar to the describe in detail the electrical connections to the blowing, lighting and heating elements, as there may be of any standard or conventional type, as will be understood by those skilled in this art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is
