SHAVING BRUSH.
Application filed April 11, 1918; Serial No. 227,962.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Vane S. BUNKER, a citizen of the United States, residing lVaukesha, in the county of lVaukesha and State of isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to brushes, but more particularly to that class known as fountain brushes for shaving purposes. It has for an object the practical and economical production of brushes of the class indicated, which are at once sanitary,
reliable and most efiicient in point of con-.
.struction and operation.
' As a further object the present invention contemplates and )rovides for the economical manufacture ot brushes having a hollow handle arranged and adapted for the reception of powdered soap, means for introdrr:-- ing powdered soap into said hollow handle, and novel means for forcing it into the brush bristles in predetermined measured quantities.
Asa further object the present invention provides novel and most efficient means for automatically sealing the outlet end of the powder receptacle againstthe entrance of moisture. 7
As a further object this invention contemplates the use of an outside sleeve, mounted upon the brush handle over which it is adapted to reciprocate for the purpose of sheathing the brush bristles when not in use, including means for locking such sleeve in its extended position.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view the invention will now be particularly described, and then pointed out by the following claim.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this application for Letters Patent, and whereon like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
Figure '1 is a perspective view of my present invention in its sheathed-or closed position.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view through brush and contents at the instant of introducing an additional charge of powdered soap to its bristles.
Figure 3 is a view corresponding with Figure 2, all parts being here shown in con= dition and in position for use in shaving.
' Figure l is a detail view in. perspective showing the exterior of handle or body of brush. v
Figure 5 is also a detail fragmentary view showing in longitudinal central section the lower" end of powder delivery tube, the plunger, and means for automatically sealingthe latter within the former, and,
Figure 6 is also a detail view showing in side elevation a fragment of the discharge piston or plunger, having limit lugs upon the surface thereof for prescribing the ex tent of its upward movement.
Reference being had to the drawings and numerals thereon, 1 indicates a combined brush handle or body and powder recep-" tacle, the same being of hollow, preferably tubular formation, having crimped and immovably secured in its lower end a brush tuft holder also by preference of sheet metal, formed with a tubular outlet 3 concentrically arranged and extending well into the bristles l of the brush, as shown by" Figures 2 and 3.
At one side the body Or receptacle '1 is indented or grooved longitudinally throughout practically its entire length as at 5, such groove being intersected at" its lower and near its upper ends by lateral grooves or looking channels 6 and 7 respectively, the former being slightly longer than the latter, and preferably both extending to one and the same side of said main'grooveo, as shown by Figure 4. I
Over the upper end of the body member or powder receptacle 1 is snugly fitted a flanged cap or closure 8 provided with a central downwardly extending tubular guide 9, which latter in efi'ect projects slightly through the top of said cap as shown at 10. The flanged portion of this cap 8 is also provided at one point with an inwardly projecting radial pin or boss 11 adapted to enter the uppermost open end of the longitudinal groove 5', and to be rotated therefrom into the'intersecting groove 7 for the purpose of locking it in its operative position indicated by Figure l.
Completely. surrounding the receptaclel is a telescoping sleeve 12 adapted to slide longitudinally thereon, and provided near its upper end with an inturned pin or pintle 18 arranged and adapted to travel in groove 5, thus regulating the relative reciprocal movement of these parts, and, when required this pintle 13 is adapted to be rotated into the lateral groove 6, as shown by Figure 1, to lock sleeve 12 in its extended bristle-protecting position.
Projecting downwardly through its sup porting and guiding tube 9 is a feed-plunger 1 1, having at its upper extremity an enlarged fiat head 15, also at an intermediate predetermined position an enlargement or lug 16 for limiting its upward movement, and at its lowermost advance end an angularly beveled plunger face 17 as best shown by enlarged Figure 5 and for sealing purposes, as will later appear.
Having thus described one embodiment of my present invention, its use and operation in the main are obvious, but may be briefly set forth as follows:
Cap or closure 8 being removed, a quantity of soap in powdered form is introduced into the receptacle 1 to fill its tubular discharge outlet 3, and partially fill said receptacle. The said cap is then replaced, partially rotated, and locked in its operative position by agency of pin or boss 11, in its passage through the upper end of groove 5, and its communicating channel 6. In this relation of parts as clearly shown by Figures 2 and 8 the feed-plunger 1e, and its extended supporting and guiding tube 9 are in exact vertical alinement, so that force applied to the upper protruding end of said plunger causes same to descend until arrested by engagement of the under side of its enlarged flat head 15 with the outermost projecting end 10 of its tubular guiding support as shown by Figure 3.
As a result of this operation a measured quantity of powdered soap is ejected from the outlet or spout 3 directly and centrally into bristles l of the brush. The bristles 4 then being moistened in the usual manner it is obvious that a suitable lather may be produced with ease and in a most economical. sanitary manner.
The brush having served its intended pur pose, plunger 14c normally occupies the position indicated by Figures 3 and 5 or" the drawings, and in this position it will be seen that a most effective annular packing 18 is invariably formed about the end of plunger 14, by reason of its beveled face 1?, and a ring of plastic soap which is naturally deposited therein. As a result the stock of soap in receptacle 1 above its discharge outlet 3 is sealed from the atmosphere and from all moisture, which might otherwise work up from the moistened bristles 4 during or after use. It will be particularly noted that the packing ring or gland 18 is automatically produced by powder at the very outlet of tube 3 at which point it is never extremely moist, but always sutliciently moist to produce a pasty condition best suited for packing or sealing purposes.
It will be noted also that the enlarged flat head 15 upon the projecting end of plunger 14 serves as a convenient means for standing the entire structure upright in an inverted position, as well as means for conveniently reciprocating said plunger in reverse directions.
Atter use, and after the usual process of brush drying, the bristles 4 may be most conveniently sheathed and protected from dust or other foreign objectionable matter by agency of the telescoping outer sleeve 12. This may readily be reciprocated in a longitudinal direction, its inwardly projecting stud or pintle 13 in the meantime traversing the groove 5 upon the exterior of receptacle 1, and thence at right angles into the lateral groove 6 for the purpose of locking it in such closed position.
In the latter conditions of parts it is evident that the structure as a whole may be safely and conveniently stored or carried in a suitable kit, traveling grip or otherwise, without spilling its contents, or the possibility of contamination. At the same time it is always ready for instant use, and is adapted to furnish multiplicity of in dividual shaves to the same or as many different persons, and without risks of irifection which are common to ordinary brushes.
Having thus described present invention, what I now claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A fountain brush includingv a soap receptacle provided at one end with brush bristles, a feed tube for soap extending from the receptacle into said bristles and having its outer end open, a guide arranged at the opposite end 01" said receptacle, a plunger slidably mounted in said guide and having its inner end of frusto-conical shape, a handle for operating said plunger, and means for limiting the movement of the plunger in said tube to permit the end sur face of said plunger to remain flush with the outer end of the tube, whereby the soap may seal the space between the tube and plunger.
In testimony whereof I al'lix my signature, in presence of two subscribing'wil; nesses.
