This invention relatesfto lreceptac-leshaving locks, "and more particular-ly those having permutation locks, such as document cases or other metal boxes, and receptacles orother things of like character to which locks of this kind are applicable. .n
Generally stated, the object of the invention is to provide a4 novel andimpro-ved construction whereby agreceptacle or other inclosure may be provided with a simple 'and eii'ectiveper-mutation. loc-k which can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost of production, and which will lat the same time be reliable and attractive in `appetu'- ance.

The lower end of the post 13 is riveted oveI` and supports a guard plate 16 which is upturned at its edges to partially inclose the mechanism of the lock. .washer 20and. on this washer lis the next and a downwardly projecting pin 25, it being understood that Figure 11 shows the lower surfaces of the tumblers. On the tumbler 21 is a washer 26, and on this washer is the third tuinbler 2T which has its lower surface provided with a pin 28, and which has a notch 29 in one edge thereof. The three tumblers are shown upside down in Figure 12, as in Figure 11, as stated, the lower surface of each tumbler is shown; but when in use, and when the box is right side up, when the cover is closed, the pins 18 and 24 extend upward, while the pins 25 and 28 extend downward. The portion of the lock which keeps the spring 5 from being pressed inward, when the box is locked, comprises a'pivoted member 30 having a depending ai'm 31 to engage said spring. and having a shorter depending ariii 32 for engaging the tuniblers of the lock, the two arms being spaced apart a distance as shown, said inember having a vertical pivot by which it is swingingly mounted on the under side of the plate 9, previously mentioned. A spi'ing Bet is suitably applied to the arm 3() to bear upon the under surface of the plate 9 and to provide the necessary friction for holding the arm 3() against being jarred out of position.
lith the foregoing' construction, it will be seen that rotation of the handle 14 will cause the pins 18, 24, 25 and 28 to communicate the rotary motion from one tumbler to the other, and the location of these pins will determine the combination of the lock. lVhen the handle is in the position shown in Figure 6, and the tumblers are as shown in this view of the drawings, the box is locked, for in such case the arm 31 is held in position to prevent inward movement of the spring 5, (see the dotted position of thisarm 31 in Figure 3) so that the spring cannot be pushed inward by the push button 7 disposed on the front edge of the box. However, by swinging the handle 14 around, first one way and then the other, the tumblers are finally moved into the position which they have in Figure 7, and in such case the notches 23v and 29 and the iiat spot 19 are. opposite the arin 32, and this will permit inward movement of the arm 31, inasmuch as'the arm 32 can move into said notches of the tumblers. as shown in F igure 7. (also as indicated in Figures 5, 8 and 10), thus permitting the Ybox to be unlocked. Of course, the positions of the pins 18, 24, and 28 can be changed on the tuinblers for diiferent boxes, so that no two boxes will have the same combination.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a very simple and inexpensive form of permutation lock is provided for a document lcase or for a box of any kind, or for receptacles or inclosures in general. However', the lock as applied to the sheet metal box as shown and described, and as constructed for this purpose, not only tends to reduce the cost of manufacture, but also tendsA to ensure both durability and reliability in the use and operation of the lock, as well as attractiveness in the appearance of the device as a. whole.
It will be seen that the opening 11 is countersunk, so that the plate 9 is disposed a distance below the top wall of the box, and whereby the handle or rotatable member 14 is flush with the top of the box, but is rotatable on the dial formed on the outer surface of the plate 9 to unlock the box. In this way. the box can be pushed yinto a vpigeon-hole in a vault.vor into a desk, without catching on other things. Also, the push button 7 engages the spring y5, as previously explained` and is either rigid therewith or separate therefrom, as may be desired. For example, this push button may be formed of sheet metal, and can simply be a small cup like element with its rini interposed between the spring and the edges ofthe opening in the front of the box through which the button extends far enough to be pushed` inward in the desired manner.
What I claim as my invention isv1. In permutation lock mechanism, the combination of a top wall with an opening therein, a plate secured to the inner side of said wall, to close said opening, with indicating means on the outer surface of sai-d plate, a rotatable member forming a controller on the dial thus formed by the outer surface of said plate, and inclosed devices controlled by said rotatable member, said opening being countersunk and said rotatable member being flush with the outer surface of said wall, in combination with other walls combining with said first mentioned wall to form a box, and an automatic latch for said box' controlled by said devices, adapted for inward movement toward the axis of said member to unlock the box, together with a push button on the front side of the box and independent of said controller and adapted for operating said latch to open the box.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1, said latch comprising a spring having an opening, and a lug for engaging said opening in the spring, said push button engaging a portion of said spring below said lug.
3. A structure as specified in claim 1, said latch comprising a spring, and said devices comprising an arm adapted to engage said spring to prevent opening of the box.
4.
