IMPROVEMENT IN MECHANISMS FOR OPERATING SCREW-PROPELLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,697, dated December 16, 1873 application filed October 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANcrs H. ToBIAs, ot' New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propelling Small Boats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereot, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a* means or mechanism by which a small boat may be propelled by physical power or other means, as desired, having for its object to so combine the parts of the propelling device thatone person may propel, reverse, and steer the boat, vor more persons may assist in the work, or other power may be applied, if desired; and it consists in the combination and arrangements of the parts, as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out by the claim.
Referring to the drawing, Figure ll represents a plan view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents a portion of the shaft and connecting mechanism; and Fig. et is an end view.
When placed in a boat of any ordinary or convenient construction, my invention occupies the position shown in Fig. 2, the boat being represented by dotted lines. A represents the shaft, suitably journaled in the frame H at a a', and B is the propeller near the rear end of the shaft, and secured thereto. C C represent two loose pinions upon the shaft, each being provided with a slot on its inner face, corresponding in size to the lugs b b on the usleeve D. The shaft A is slotted longitudinally between the pinions C C, and the sleeve D is provided with a feather. corresponding in form with and fitting the slot or groove in the shaft A, so that the sleeve may be moved lengthwise upon the shaft between the pinions, and has a positive rotary motion with the shaft.` The outside of the sleeve is constructed to receive the forked end of an arm, G, connected with the lever E, by which means the sleeve maybe moved back and forth on the shaft A, and connected with either pinion C C, or to occupy a position between the two pinions, thus Agivin g a forward and backward motion to the propeller, or throwing the saine out of gear, as desired. Motion is given to the parts above described throug'h the medium of the cog-wheel I, shaft J, pinion e, and bevel gear K, all of which is suitably secured by the frame H. The wheel I has the cogs on the lower face, and always remains in gear withthe pinions C C, both of which may have a motion independent of the shaft A, unless connected with said shaft by the sleeve D, as before described. When it is desired to propel the boat by hand or physical power, the cranks m m are placed, one upon each end of theshaft L, carryin g the gear K, by which means one or more persons may propel the boat; but other power may be applied, if desired.
N represents the rudder, and N the tiller. It will be observed that the tiller N', lever E, and the cranks M are arranged with such relation to each other that one person may reach them all without moving from his place, and propel, steer, and reverse the propeller', or throw the same out of gear, at will.
By this means a convenient, efficient, and simple propelling device is provided, which may readily be placed in small boats ofthe ordinary construction, and be operated by one or more persons or other power, as desired.

The combination of the propelling mechair ism, consisting of propeller, shaft, and pinions, and the operating' parts I J e K, the reversing and steering mechanism, the combination and arrangement being adapted for operationas herein shown and described, whereby a boat may be propelled, steered, and reversed by a single person, or steered and reversed by a single person, when propelled by other power, as and for the purpose specied.
