Description

r. RALFS SAW VISE AWE/v or. zlmmgw 5 By Wan MM;
6' TTOB/VEY" Patented May 22, 1923.
UNITED STATES l,a56,33d
THEODORE RALFS, F DAVENPORT, IOWA.
SAW VISE. I
Application filed May 19,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE RALFs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw Vises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has ref rence to improvements in saw vises, such as are used for the purpose of holding the blade of a saw in position while the same is being filed or otherwise operated on. The chief purpose thereof is to provide means for clamping or gripping the blade which will be quick acting, so that the blade can be instantly released for adjustment or removal, or quickly placed in position. It is also arranged so that the jaws can be placed and held in adjusted positions, with relation to the bench on which the tool is supported.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 shows my invention in front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detail of the shaft 14:.
l is a vertical arm, fitted at its lower end with spacectapart plates 2, having a pivotal connection with a bracket 3, projected from a clamp 4, )rovided with a screw 5, whereby the clamp can be attached to a table or bench. The parts 2 and 3 are pivoted by means of a bolt 6, provided on one end with a thumb-nut 7, by means of which the plates 2 can be caused to embrace the bracket 3, and hold said plates from movement. At its up per end the arm 1 is provided with a clampplate or jaw 8.
The lower part of the arm 1 is projected forwardly and upwardly into a pair of arms 9, spaced apart from the arm 1 a desired distance, and between the upper ends of the arms 9 is pivoted a lever 10, provided at its upper end with a clamp-plate or jaw 11, in opposition to the jaw 8, and adapted to be brought into contact therewith. The lower 1921. Serial No. 470,772.
part of the arms 9 is formed with a bearing 12, having bearings 13, in which is supported a shaft 14, passing through an opening in the lower part of the arm 10, and provided at one end with a handle 15. At the point where said shaft passes through the arm 10 it is provided with an ofi-set portion 16, so disposed that when the handle 15 is turned upwardly, as shown in the figures, the lower end of the arm 10 is held in an outward position. This holds the jaw 11 in operative position with relation-to the jaw 8, so that a saw-blade which is placed between such jaws is held rigidly in position therein. When it is desired to release the saw, the handle 15v is turned downwardly, moving the lower arm of thelever 1O inwardly.
By releasing the thumb-nut 7 the vise can be tipped toward the bench or away there-- from, so as to support the saw blade in an inclined position with relation thereto. For some operations this would place'such blade in a more convenient position.
What I claim and desire to secure by letters patent, is:
A device of the class described, comprising a screw clamp adapted to be secured on a work bench or like object, a clamping bolt in a portion of the clamp, an upwardly di rected member pivoted with its lower end on said clamping bolt and forming a rear arm with a vise jaw at its upper end and two front arms parallel to the rear arm, a beam lever fulcrumed between the front arms and having at its upper end a vise jaw arranged to coact with the first mentioned jaw and its lower end depending between the front arms, a horizontally disposed crankshaft journaled in the two front arms and engaged with the lever to swing it, and a hand lever fixed at one end of the crakshaft for imparting rotary movement to the same.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
THEODORE RALFS.
