Jorrnson and OLor LUNDSTEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of separable belt buckles, and has for its object to provide a buckle of this character in which one end of a belt may be secured in adjusted position to the body portion of the buckle and the opposite end of the belt may be permanently secured to a separate member of the buckle which is adapted to be detach ably connected to the body portion thereof whereby the buckle may be readily disconnected without interfering with its adjusted length.

With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

It is found in practice desirable to provide a buckle comprising a body portion having a front plate which is adapted to be suitably ornamented, and to provide in that body portion acla1np by which one end of the belt may be secured and to also provide another member of the buckle to which the opposite end of the belt may be permanently attached and to provide means in said member whereby it may be releasably secured to the body of the buckle by which construction the belt ends may be Serial No. teases.

Yi ith r ierence to the drawings, 10 desig nates the body portion of a buckle which is provided with a front plate 11 having rearwardly-turned edge walls 12 on either side thereof and these walls are preferably provided with inwardlyturned flanges 13 in which flanges are formed suitable slots 14-, near one end of the buckle, having enlargements at one end as at 15 to receive the head portions of the studs, presently de scribed.

At the opposite end of this buckle body we have turned inwardly the pair of tabs forming pivot ears 16 in which is mounted a clamp-bar l7 operated by a handle 18 to secure the end 19 of the belt in adjusted position in this body portion of the buckle.

In order to provide simple and effective 'means whereby the opposite end 20 of the belt may be secured to this body portion of the buckle, we have provided a so-called bail-member 21 which comprises essentially a plate having an opening 22 on its outer edge through which the end of the belt may be looped and secured by rivets 23, or otherwise, and this portion of the bail is provided with an enlargement or extension which projects into this looped portion of the belt to guide the bail and prevent it from pivoting in the loop of the belt rendering it more readily operated When it is desired to connect this member to the body portion.

The inner face of this bail is provided with a pair of studs 25 which may be formed integral with the plate itself or they may be formed separate and riveted thereto and in either case each is provided with a shank portion having a head adapted to fit into the openings 15 in the flanges 13 of the body, and the shank portions of these openings so that when the heads are passed through the large opening and an endways tension is applied to the belt ends, the shank portions of these studs are drawn through the narrower openings 14 into the slightly enlarged ends 26 of the slots, the smaller portions of these slots 14 serving to slightly grip the shank portion of the studs and prevent them from accidentally moving from their inner positions at 26 after hav ng been drawn therelnto by end- Ways tension on the belt.
