.I th regard to apparatus permitting of the istillation of carbonaceous material, it is a we l appreciated fact that di'uiculty has been e ierienced in connection with the can hon im' uging against the side walls of the comp ailment within which it deposited. in these views the reference numeral 5 indicates the trough in which the carbonaceous material is deposited through chutes (3 and in the usual manner; is removed therefrom through a discharge pipe 7, by any suitable type of conveyor such as a spiral 8, it being noted that a shaft drive 9 may serve to rotate the shaft upon which the spiral 8 is'rnounted.
t is new to be noted that the difliculty set forth in the premable occurs, more particularly with regard to the side walls of the trough 5 upon which the accumulations are deposited, and which the conveyor is incapable of engaging, and with this in view, it will be noted that 1 preferably utilize a pair of shafts 10 extending longitudiriall of the trough 5 said shafts being arranged upon opposite sides of the center of said trough.
To properly drive these latter shafts, I may conveniently utilize any suituhle type of drive 11 connecting with the drive 9, and receiviu; motion therefrom, it heing noted that gear wheels 12 allixed to each of the shafts l0, may serve to synchronize the motion of the same, and cause a rotation of these elements in opposite directrons.

Thus it will be seen that by means of my improved construction, the side walls of the trough will he at all times subjected to a scraping action, effectually removing any particles which have impinged thereon, so that danger of the entire machine becoming choked, incident to these accumulations within the trough, or a jamming of the coi'iveyor due to receiving large particles of accumulation is eliminated.

A cleaning device for use With apparatus employed in the distillation of carbonaceous material and comprising a trough into which the material to be carried off is received, a conveyor operating along the base of the trough for carrying off the material and cleaning means independent of the conveyor and arranged within the trough, said cleaning means bein disposed above the conveyor and operating along the entire length thereof and being osi tioned to operateiagainst the walls 0 the trough to breakup into small particles deposits of carbonaceous material tending to build up "on the wall of the trough" and to throw such particles onto the conveyor.
