Be it known that I, RALPH J. Hovnr, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric lSadirons, of which the' following, taken in connection with the drawing, 1s a description. A
vMy invention relates to sad irons, partielllarly to the class which are heated by an electric current passing through a. coil located in the body of the iron.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an indicator conveniently located 1n the iron whereby it can be seen at a 'glance whether the current is turned on or oil. Accidents frequently happen in the use of electric irons by allowing the iron to temporarily remain on the cloth to be ironed whenthe current is turned on. In a very short time the ironbecomes heated to a point of scorching or burning the material on which it ls resting thereby frequently causing the loss of the entire garment or the material.
My invention is designed to furnish a constant reminder to the user that the current is turned on, by a small indicator which I have placed, in thisinstancaat the forward end i of the iron, although it may be located i wherever desired, wherein a coil `will be lighted whenever the current is passing and will be dark when the circuit is disconnected.
AIn the accompanying drawings I have illustrated what I now consider a form of construction embodying the essential features of my invention, the parts being assembled ina simple and ecient manner and in these drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an iron with my attachment applied thereon, A

Referring tothe drawings A represents the bottom of the iron .which has an electric vcoil a, which may be arranged in any well known manner'. 'Ilhe body of the iron B is provided with a recess bin the rear portion thereofto lwhich is` attached a bracket b which supports the Vterminals b21-b by means of which suitable connection may be made with a standard light socket, to a source of electrical ener Fitting over the body of the iron and forming a casing therefor is a shell C provided with suitable openings c at the rear end thereof through which the terminals 62-63 extend. Projecting upwardly from the top of this casing is a handle B which may be of any well known construction suitable for this purpose.
C' is a sleeveformed of any suitable insulating material whichy is positioned within a socket `formed in the forward point of the body of the iron as shown in `Figure 2, and which extends through an opening in the corresponding part of the shell or casing C. Attached to the upper end of this shell or casing C is a tubular transparent member c which encloses anl electric coil c therein which has suitable electrical connections by. Vmeans of the wire c2 With the bracket member b and extends down through said sleeve to the coil a, in the bottom of the iron, When. the current is turned on the coil c' will display a light through the transparent casing c, which will indicate to the user the condition of the iron. This indicator may -be seen-from any part of the room 'and will always inform the user whether or not the current 1s iowing throughthe coils so that there willl not .be any danger of the user placing the iron on the cloth to be pressed or ironed while the current is turned on thereby overheating the iron and scorching or burning the cloth beneath it. Whenever the current is turned of the coil is dark and the user would know that the iron is not in condition for use.
I claim Y 1pk sad iron having a heating coil arranged in the body thereof with\suitable terminals for electrical connection projecting therefrom, a casing fitting over the body of the iron, an insulating sleeve supported in the forward point of the iron and projecting through an opening in the casing infront of the handle of the iron, a tubular transparent member supportedon vsaid sleeve, a display `coil in said transparent member, said coilA having suitable electrical connections with a heating coil inthe iron to car-- ry an electric current, substantially as described.
