J. P. COWLEY AU-TOGRAPHIC REGISTER Filed June 6, 1921 Patented May 8, 1923.
UNITED STATES iaeaaie F rmi or-Fica JAY PETER COWLEY, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
AUTOGBAPHIC REGISTER.
Application filed June 6,
To all whom it may concern i Be it known that I, JAYPETER COWLEY, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident I so constructed that itmay be conveniently:
mounted on the dash board of a vehicle, and in such position will be easily accessible for use. I
Another object of the invention is to provide an autographic register of the above character embodying improved means for advancing the paper stri whereon data is recorded, and other improved features whereby the device may be adjustably mounted and the record strip protected.
In accomplishing these and other'objects of the invention,v I have provided the improved details of construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an autographic register embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same, as mounted upon the dash board of an automobile or the like.
Figure 3 is a front view of the device, partly broken away for better illustration.
Figure 4 is an upper end view of the dev1ce.
Referring more in detail to the several views of the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate the same or like parts 1 designates a rectangular, metal housing,
' i the front wall 2 of which is provided with a rectangular opening 3 beneath which a plate 4, forming a writing table, is mounted.- This table is fixed rigidly to the opposite side walls 5 and 6 ofthe housing by means of rivets or screws that are extended through the walls and through ears 7 that are turned downwardly from the opposite sides ofthe table.
At opposite sides of the upperand lower ends of the table plate 4, are down-turned 1921. Serial No. 475,334.
wings 8, andgbetween theseare rotatably supported rollers 9 and 10 over which a record strip 11 isextended. Thisstripis wound in rolls 12 and 13, respectively formed on axles land lo which' are mounted beneath the writing plate with their opposite ends rotatably contained within the opposite side walls of the housing; the strip being extended over therolle-rs 9-and 10 and across the plate 4 sothat it may be written upon.'
Theaxles 14: and 15 have advancing and unwinding gear wheels 17 "and 18 respectively fixed in offset alinement thereon, and adapted to bemoved into mesh with either of these, is ag'ear wheel 19 fixed on'the inner end of astub shaft '20 that is slidable through has a knurled knob 21. thereon whereby it may beturned to causethe strip to be advanced from oneroll to the other across the To facilitatethe placing of a record roll the housing wall, and which at'its outer end, I
writing plate. A coiled spring 23* is'loc ate d about the shaft between theknob'iand wall of.
the housing, which normally retains the 1 shaft 20'at its outer limit of movement and,
within the device, I provide for the removal of the side wall 5 from the housing. This wall is separate from the housing and, at its opposite ends, has laterally turned ears 25 adapted to overlie the end walls of the housing and these ears are provided with slots 26 through which thumb screws 27 may be extended. These screws are threa'dedinto the end walls of the housing and may be tightened against the ears to hold the wall platefunctionally in position.
The axles are equipped with projections'28 over which cores on which the strips are wound may be advanced and the rolls thereby prevented froinslipping on the axles.
To protect the record strip, I have provided the device with a cover plate 30 whichis hingedly attached to the upper edge of the housing and which will close the opening 2 when the device is not in use.
A preferred means of mounting the device is illustrated in Figure 2, .wherein 35 designates a flange that is hingedly fixed to the upper rear edge of the housing. and through which screws, or the like, 36 maybe projected to secure the device to a dash board,
as indicated at 3 A spring arm 38 is fixed to the board, below the housing which, at its outer end, has a pin 39 therein adapted to register within any one or" a series of apertures 4:0 in the lower end wall of the housing for the purpose of holding the device at a desired position of adjustment.
Assuming that the device is so constructed and mounted, it is apparent that by turning the knob 21 the record strip will be advanced across the writing plate and a record may be kept thereon of purchases, or other data which one may wish to preserve.
It is also apparent that the manner of mounting shown permits the device to be adbecome slack on one of the rollers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1.1n combination with a vehicle dash board, an autographic register comprising a housing mounted on said board having an opening in the top wall, a writing plate mounted within the housing beneath said opening, guide rollers mounted at opposite ends of said plate, a pair of axles mounted within the housing beneath the plate, about which a record strip may be wound drawn over said guide rollers and across the writing plate, gear wheels fixed on said axles in ofl'set alinemen-t, a shaft slidably and rotatably mounted in a wall of the housing, a gear wheel fixed on the inner end of said shaft adapted to mesh with either of the first named gears, a knob on the outer end of said shaft for turning the same to advance the strip, a spring wound about the'shatt bearing against the knob to normally retain the shaft gear in mesh with the advancing gear, but yieldably to permit their being disengaged and the shifting of the shaft gear into mesh with the re-winding gear.
2. In an autographic register ofthe class described, a housing having an opening in the top wall thereof, a writing plate mounted within the housing beneath said opening, a pair of axles whereon a record strip may be wound after being extended across the writing plate mounted beneath the plate with their opposite ends rotatably supported within opposite side walls of the housing, means for rotating the axles to advance the strip; one of said side walls of the housing being removable therefrom and having laterally turned ears at its opposite'ends overlying end walls of the housing, and thumb screws threaded into said end walls'a'dapted to be tightenedagainst said ears to retain the plate in place.
Signed at Seattle, Washington, this 31st day of May 1921.
