T all lwhom t may/'concern Be it knownthat I, JULrUs ELLIS, a citizen of the UnitedY States, residing at Fulton, in the county of Oswego and State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Nut Locks; and l do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which itv appeitains to make and use the same. y
The inventionl has relation to lock means, and more particularly to devices for ,securing nuts and'burrs upon bolts, or like parts, to prevent their loosening and displacement when subjected to vibration or other-'causes tending to effect backward rotation of anut upon the bolt or like part upon which it is threaded.
The invention provides lock means which', when applied to a nut, will'fnot interfere with the tree and ready application ot a wrench or like tool generally employed for rotating the nut to eitect a tightening tliereotsaid lock means being readily operable without requiring the. application of any tool or instrument and which has indicated means associated therewith so 'that it mayv be'ascertained when the nutv islockedf or released, whereby the nut may be used yrepeatedly without impairment of the eiiiciency of the lock means.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
lVhile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet diterent conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details ot construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the 'following description and'designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters. j
'Ilhe numeral 1 designates 'a nut or burr which `may be of any approved construction and which is provided with' the usualthreaded opening or eye 2 for the reception of a bolt or like part. A channel 4 is provided in an edge of the nut 1 and receives alslide 5 which snuglyrits the same. A' recess 6 is formed in the edge portion of' the nut 1 providedwith the channel tand is in communication with the latter and adapted lto be closed by means of the slide 5. The recess is'widened at one end, as'indicated at 7. An' opening 8 leads fromv the widened portion 7 of the recess and extends into'the opening or Veye 2 o the nut. f Y
A rocker 9 snugly fits the recess 61 and is provided in itsv upper edge with a notch 10 which receives a pinll carried by the slide 5'. Longitudinal movement'of the slide 5 effects v a. rocking of the part 9'.' A lock bolt 12, fitted inthe opening` 8', is provided at its upper end with a hook 13 which engages' a notch 14 in the end of the rocker 9 adjacent thel opening 8. The widened portion? offthe recess' ac-` commodates the hookend 13 of the lock bolt 2 and the inner end of the latterrisl prof jected into ther opening 2, or withdrawn therefrom by a rocking' of the part 9 when sliding the part 5.
The bolt 3, or like part, is provided with one or more longitudinal grooves 15 in its threaded portion to receive the inner end of the lock bolt 12, whereby to secure the nut l and hold the same in the required adjusted position. Movement of the slide 5 in one direction results in projecting the lock bolt 12 into positive engagement with the bolt 3 lor like part and movement of the slide 5 in an opposite direction withdraws the lock bolt 12 from engagement with the part 3, whereby the nut 1 is released and may be removed and used again` since the locking means have not sulercd any injury or impairment in the removal of the nut which is adapted for repeated use.
Indicating means are provided whereby it may be readily ascertained when the lock bolt is in engagement with the bolt 3 or released therefrom. The indicating` means consist of a mark 16 on the slide 5 and corresponding marks on an edge portion of the nut l at one side o1"- the channel 4 and designated by the letters O and S. When the slide 5 is moved to bring the mark 16 thereof in register with the mark designated by the letter O, it indicates that the lock is off, and when the slide 5 is moved to bring the mark 16 in line with the mark designated by the letter S, it indicates that the lock bolt is shut or projected into engagement with the part 3, whereby the nut l is made secure and sate against casual displacement.
What is claimed is:
l. A nut lock comprising a lock bolt, a rocker associated with said lock bolt, a
. slide, and means forming a connection between said rocker and said slide, and the parts being so disposed that rectilinear movement of the slide effects longitudinalL movement of the lock bolt to secure or release the nut as required.
2. A nut having a recess in an edge portion and an opening leading from an end of the recess into the threaded eye, a lock bolt disposed in said opening, a rocker arranged in the recess and having an end portion in engagement with the lock bolt, and a slide closing the recess and adapted to operate the rocker and lock bolt.
3. A nut having a recess in an edge portion, an opening leading from an end of the recess into the threaded eye of the nut and having a channel in the recessed edge, a lock bolt mounted in said opening, a rocker in the recess and having an end in engage-- ment with the lock bolt, and a slide mounted in the channel and closing the recess and having a portion in engagement with the rocker to effect positive movementot the lock bolt in each direction.
lt. In combination, a nut having a channel, a recess and an opening in an edge portion, the recess being widened at one end and the widened portion of the recess being in line with said opening, a rocker. disposed in the recess and having a notch in its outer edge and a notch in the end adjacent the widened portion of the recess, a lock boltgin said opening having a hook at its outer end engaging the notch in the end of the rocker, a slide tting said channel and closing said recess, and a pin projecting from the slide and entering the notch in the outer edge ot the rocker, the parts being so disposed whereby longitudinal movement of the slide actuates the lock bolt through the instrumentality oft `the rocker.
5. In combination, a nut, a lock bolt slidably mounted in saidfnut and adapted to be projected through the periphery of the screw threaded opening therein, a slidable member on said nut, and means connecting said slidable member to said rock bolt, whereby when said member is moved in one direction the bolt will be retracted and when the member is moved in the opposite direction the bolt will be projected. 6. In combination with a nut, a lock bolt. means slidable to project or retract said lock bolt, lsaid means concealing said lock bolt, and means cooperating with said means to 1indicate the relative position of said lock bo t.
