WILLIAM I. BOUCHE, OF LANCASTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB TO GOULD COUPLER COMPANY, A. CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DYNAMIC-DRIVING MEANS. Application filed February a, 1922i Serial in. 533,790.
To all whom it may concern: axle 4 carrying the'usual wheels 5. Secured Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BoUoH, to the' body of the car isa frame work 6 55 a citizen of the United States, and resident of rigidly carrying a generator 7, the armature Lancaster, in the county of Erie and State of of which is adapted to be driven .by a short New York, have invented certain new and shaft 9 adapted to slide in bearings 10 in the. useful Improvements in Dynamo-Driving direction of its axis, which bearings are Means, of which th following is a specifirigid with the frame work of the motor. In so cation. the embodiment of the invention illustrated, The invention relates to improvements in shaft 9 carries a pin 11 adapted to engage a 10 dynamo driving means and particularly to resilient metallic member 12 projecting from means for effectively driving 'a generator a disc 13 which is carried rigid with the from an axle of a railway car, or the like. rotating armature of the dynamo, this mem- 05 An object of the invention is the provision ber 12 being adapted to give way or break in of an improved driving connection for the case the dynamo should be stopped for any- 1 generator of the shaft drive type in which reason while the car is still running and thus the dynamo may be rigidly supported from prevent breakage of the parts. If the disthe car body. The invention aims to simplify tance between bearing 10 and casing 14, the driving arrangement, to render the same (presently to be described), varies at any certain in operation under the varying contime, as when the car goes about. curves, 20 ditions of operation and to avoid elements shaft 9 will slide-through the bearing 10. and constructions whichmay tend to cause Member 12 'is long enough so that pin 11 trouble. Other objects and. advantages of will at the same timeslide along it, and v the invention will appear more fully hereinmember 12 will always engage the pin under after in the following specification and be such condltions of varying distance. The 25 particularly pointed out in the appended above described parts are all old. lai A gear case 14 is carried by the end sill In order that a clearer understanding of 3, gear case 14, in the form of the invention the invention may be had attention is hereillustrated, being provided with flanges 15 by directed to the accompanying drawings which ar rigidly secured to the end sill. A 30 forming part of this application and illus- 1 jack shaft 16 is mounted for rotation in gear trating certain embodiments of the invencase 14 parallel to the car axle 4. One end tion. In the drawings? e of the ack shaft extends out of the gear Fig. 1 represents a side view of one form case and is driven from the car axle by a of my device applied to the driving of a driving connection, such as a flexible chain" 35 dynamo, secured to a railway car body, or friction drive, which will permit movefrom a car axle, certain parts being shown ment of the car axle relative to its truck in in section; the lengthwise direction of the axle and also Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section "ertically as is required under operating 1 throu h'the driving connections ,of the de-- conditions. In the embodiment of the in- 40 vic sfiown in Fig. 1; vention illustrated a chain 17 is shown as Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same partly running over sprockets 18 and 19 on the car shown in section; i axle and the jack shaft. The jack shaft 16 Fig. 4 is a vertical section similar to that is provided at its opposite end, within the shown in Fig. 2, showing a modified form gear case, with a beveled gear 20 which 45 of construction; meshes with a beveled gear 21 on 'theend Fig. 5 is a plan view showing a further of the propeller shaft 22 which extends at modification, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation right angles to jack shaft 16, through the of the parts'shownin Fig. 5,'certain parts head or sleeve 23 which is rigidly securedbeing shown in section. a to gear case 14. Shaft 22 is connected to .the 50 Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and3 of-the intermediate shaft 24 by means of au ni-' drawings, the body of a railway car, indiversal joint 25, the opposite'end of the shaft cated at 1, is provided at one end with a 24 belng connected to the short shaft 9 by truck 2 having end-sills 3 supported by the m ans of a universal Joint 26.
' the sleeve has tellations of the Provision should be made for adjusting the positions of jack shaft 16 and propeller shaft 22 to take up the wear in beveled gears 20 and 21. This may readily be accomplished by mounting the shafts in suitable bearings, as is well understood. In the form of device illustrated shaft 22 runs in roller bearings 27 which are mounted in members 28 and 29 which are screw-threaded .intosuitable flanges at the opposite ends of sleeve 23, the arrangement being" such that shaft 22 and gear 21 may readily be moved forward or back, in the lengthwise direction of shaft 22, to adjust the position of gear 21.
The jack shaft suitable manner for lengthwise adjustment. In the form of construction illustrated a ball bearing 30 of the self aligning type is shown as provided at one end of the jack shaft immediately adjacent to bevel gear 20. On the other end of the jack shaft a self aligning double row radial ball bearing 31 is provided accompanied by a ball thrust bearing 32. The ball race of this latter bearing is mounted in an adjustable sleeve 33 which is threaded into its support 34. Accordingly by running the bearing sleeve 33 into or out of its support the jack shaft may be shifted in axial direction. The edge 33 of the bearing sleeve extending beyond support 34 may be castellated and when the position of been adjusted it may be locker in such position "by a tongue or pin secured to support 34 which will enter one of the cassleeve, this tongue or pin not being illustrated.
The form of construction shown in Fig. 4 is the same as that previously described except that the gear case 14 takes the form of a housing cast integral with the end sill or forming a part thereof. In the form of construction shown in Fig; 2 a cover plate 35 may be used to cover one side of the gear case and in the construction shown in Fig. 4 a similar cover plate 35 may be used.
In the constructions so far described various advantages are secured, including positive action, possibility of adjusting parts to take up wear, maintenance of the driving relation under all conditions of operation, simplicity of construction, etc. Also the disadvantage of a direct gear connection with the car axle, in which the parts are to great wear and tear, is avoided.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings the gear case 14*is pivotally mounted from the end sill 3 so as subj cc to permit the same to swing towards and away from the car axle. In the embodiment illustrated the gear case has an upwardly extending lug 36 which is pivotally suspended by means of pin 37 from arms 38 of a bracket 38 which is rigidly secured to the end sill 3.
In this form of construction spring means 16 is also mounted in any I) t is not limited are preferably employed to tend to resilientlypress the gear case away from the car axle. In the form of construction disclosed, the bracket comprising arms 38 secured to en sill 3 has a vertical flange 39 extending downwardly below the end sill through an opening in, which extends a rod 40. This rod is provided with an eye 41 through which extends a pin 42 which is mounted in cars 43 which are secured to gear case 14. Rod is provided with an abutment 44 at its opposite end, this preferably being a nut adjustably mounted on a screw-threaded ortion of the rod. A spring 45 is coiled about the rod with one end pressing against the bracket extension 39 and the other end pressing against nut 44, this spring acting to resiliently pull the gear case away from the car axle.
Normally the nut 44 is forced by spring 45 against an abutment 46' carried by the frame so as to permit a slight amount of slack in the belt or chain 17. If the axle moves relatively to the dynamo in such a way as to take up or more than take up this slack, suitable driving connection. is still maintained between the axle and dynamo because the dynamo viewed in Figs. 5 and 6, under the tension of the spring 45} Means also are provided to prevent the gear case from swinging too far towards the axle at any time, as-it might tend to do under running conditions, against the pressure of spring 45. If the gear case were permitted at any time to move towards the axle sufliciently to slack up chain 17 to a considerable extent, the chain might jump.
off the teeth of one of the sprockets. Such action is prevented in the form of construction illustrated by providing bracket 38 with an extension 46 having a downwardly extending flange 46 having anopening therethrough. through which the outer threaded portion of rod 40 extends. A pair of lock nuts 47 are positioned on the thread ed end portion of rod 40 beyond flange 46. which nuts are adapted to abut against flange 46 to act as a stop. whenever the gear case tends to move towards the car axle su ciently to slack chain 17.
It should be understood that the invention strictly tothe details of construction described but is as broad as is indicated by the accompanying claims.
