Application inea nay 14,'1921, sentiiy No. 469,719.
San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Dispensing Cigarette' Case, ofivhich'the following is a specifica-tion.
Qur invention relates to improvements in dispensing cigarette cases and -the like wherein an endless conveyor operates in f c v "13 are each provided With a pair of toothed l conjunction with a dispensing member yto dispense a .cigarette each time the cover is opened.
l5 The primary object of our inventionfis to provide an improved cigarette caser- I `ed to move .about thetoothedihubs 14, said'.
adapted to dispense cigarettes.
YA further object is toprovide a case of the character described arranged to facilitate reiilling.
Another object is to provide improved means for moving a cigarette into a position from Which it may be readily Withdrawn.
A still further object of our invention is to provide improved means for 'moving-` the dispensing member into an operative position after each operation. l
A. still further object is toy provide an improved construction in a cigarette case of the character described affording'positive action and compactness of form.
le accomplish these and other objects by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part'of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings and in which:
Fig. l is a vertical section of ouriinproved 10 cigarette case;
2 is a horizontal section taken along; th line 2- 2 of Fig. l in the direction indicated; i
Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken detail ofthe conveyor operating means; y v
Fig. 4 is an enlarged broken section taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 in the direction indicated; and
Fig. 5 is a broken detail of our improved dispensing means. i
Referring to the drawings the rnumeral -1 is used to designate in general a container having sides 2 hingedly connected along one edge thereof as at 3. as best disclosed in Fig.
2vof the drawing.' Thecontainer 2'lis pro- 'arranged vertically-opposite the correspond- 'in-g hubs on the shaft-13.
'- vided with a compartment'tat ,thegbottom y thereof and with a coverportion hingedly connected at the top by a' suitable hinge 7. The containerV 1 is likewise provided `vvithtop and bottoni partitionsS and 9 'and 'vvitlr-Q'` a centrally disposedxvertical partition 11 positioned-between the 'partitions Sand ySAL/as best disclosed in F ig. 2 of the drawings.'-f`
Sliafts12 vand y13 are rotatably'mounted V betvveen'the partitions 8f and 9adjac'ent ithe'ff65 l sides ofthe partition 11.V v The] shafts 12'and hubs114. 'lhefhubs 14.1ipon the shaft-12 arey A pair of endless conveyors 516 are `uniti-ntadapted'tofreceive a cigarette 19'ther'ei'iif'75 1 The inner surface of the yconveyor 1'6`is preferably provided with serrations 21l adapted to mesh with thetoo'thed hubs 14Lto insure av positive `movement oflth'econve'yor 16 and vane 17 when the shaftr121isrotated in a 80 nia-nner hereinafter described.
' The upperk partitionS is providedatione endv thereof WithfanY aperture 22 of ajsize adapted to permit the passage'of. a single cigarette therethrough.v The lower parti-3.85 tion 9 is provided with a `slot 24,` ,one endof which is directly opposite-the vaperture 22, said slot 24 being of a Width less thanthe diameter of a cigarette'. The shaft 1 3 is made holl'oiv to receive' alrod 26fsli`dably and v90 rotatably mounted vtherein and-:extending 'outwardly ateach endv thereof. yThe lower end of the rodv 26 is provided With a dispensingr member '27.. A spring; 28'secured vvithinthe compartment`4 upon the lovverx95 l f side of the partition 9 has' free end ento be advanced upwardly into the container IO through the slot 24 as. ldisclosed indotted lines :in Fig. lof thedravvingl 'i The cover` i6. is'fprovidedkk with a-vlug- 2 9 adaptedto engage the top'v Iof the yrod -26 and to depress thesame when' said cover 6 is 7105`1l moved to awclos'ed positiom'the'reby depressinp; the dispensing' member 2.7 against` the tension ofthe spring28 tol apoint vslightly j '4 below the uppers'iirface of thepartition 9 d Apspring S21-securedtoithefllovver sideof :110 p sie the partition 9 operates to normally hold the dispensing member 27 in the portion of the slot 24 Aopposite the aperture 22er1 the partition 8. The shaft 12 is provided on its upates to normally hold the pawl 33 against the ratchet ,32. 1n this manner, when the cover 6 is open the pawl 33 moves laterally against the tension ot the spring 37 to pass the ratchet 82. 'Virhen the cover 6 is closed, as from the dotted positionshown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the teeth 34 of the nawl 33 engage Vthe ratchet 32 and actuate the saine to rotate the shaft 12 thereby advancing the conveyor 16 a corresponding amount.
1n operationfour invention is as follows: Thesides 2, which arenormally held in a "'clesedyposition by a suitable latch 39, are
lswung upwardly about the hinge 3 to permit access to the container. A plurality of cigarettes `19v are .inserted in a container, each cigarette being placed in a compartment defined by the varies -17 or the conveyorsvlt..
rlhe sides 2 are then closed and the cover 6 moved about the hinge 7 to a closed'position.
A latch el is provided for holding the cover 6 in a closed position against the tension of a spring 12 mounted. at the hinge 7 to cause the cover to "open when the latch 4:1 is released. r1`lie closing of the cover depresses the rod 26 and vdispensing member 27 in the manner above rdescribed and at the same time moves lthe conveyor to advance the cigarettes one position. y. A
The compartments 18 are arranged in such a manner as to cause a cigarette 19 to' be brought in alignment with the aperture 22 cach time the cover '6 is closed. 1f now the latch 41 is released the cover 6 will'be opened by the spring 42 and the cigarette 19 will pushed upwardly through the aperture 22 by the dispensingniember 27 actuated by the spring 28. r1`he upper end of the cigarette 19 will be moved tothe. position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing7 where it may be readily grasped for removal, l/Vhen the cover 6 is again closed the conveyors 16 land cigarettes 19 will be advanced inthe manner'4 above described to bring the neXt succeeding cigarette into alignment with the vaperture 22, the movement of said succeeding cigarette disi'alacin'g the dispensing member 27 'against"the tension of the spring 31 to the, position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5 oi' the drawing. As the cover 6 is moved downwardly the lug 29 is brought against the "upper end of .the rod 26, further movement of the cover 6 causing the rod 26 and the dispensing member 27, secured to the ya cigarette case of compact form having an attractive appearance and provided with a durable and positive acting mechanism tor dispensingA cigarettes.
