Be it known that I, LOUIS A. STRAUBEL. a citizen of the United States, and resident of Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Pressing and Labeling Interfoldcd Sheets of Paper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

This invention pertains to-machines for pressing and labeling interfolded sheets of toilet paper, paper toweling and the like.

At the present time the conventional types .15 of what are commonly termed interfolding machines, perform the inter-folding operation upon wide sheets of paper, approximately 1000 of which constitute a bundle, that is cut or separated into commercial packages, which require wrapping or labelinofor the market.

me to the nature and width of these bun- 'dles, it has been found impossible to press and label them manually, consequently the bundle is first cut into commercial packages and then labeled separately by hand, which is a slow and expensive operation and does not give a uniform package.

It is therefore an object of the present in vention to provide a machine for pressing and labeling the bundles delivered from the interfolded machine, which may then be cut into finished commercial packages of uniform sizes. IVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be more apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in what is herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out and defined by the appended claims.

In the drawings, one embodiment in the invention is illustrated. but it is understood that various changes in details of construc tion are contemplated as within the appended claims.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the invention comprises a table 1, provided at one end with a Vertical rib forming a stop 2 which extends transversely across the front end of the table. Mounted adjacent the side edges of the table are a pair of slidable blocks 3 pro vided with tongues 4 adapted to travel in the dove-tailed slots 5 formed in the table 1. Removably mounted on the blocks 3 is a presser 6, which extends transversely across the table, the same being in the form of an angle iron for the purpose of rigidityand having its-vertical lip 7 slightly tapered for the purpose which will be later explained Movement is imparted to the blocks 3 and consequently the presser G, by means of the lovers 8, pivoted on opposite sides of the table and connected to the blocks 3 by means of the links 9.

Formed centrally of the table is an opening 10 extending transversely across the same and in which is disposed a folder 11. Like the presser 7. this folder is angular in construction. for the purpose of rigidity, and is provided at its opposite ends with pintles 19. journaled in the brackets 13, secured to the sides of the table. Mounted on the pintles 12 are a. pair of operating levers It by which the folder 11 is oscillated to perform its function which will be described in the operation of the machine.

In the operation of the machine it is desired to yieldably hold one end of the label. I, therefore. provide a yieldable grip 15 comprising a gripping ar 16 extending transversely of the table below the top and carried by a pair of bell cranks 17 pivotally carried by the sides of the table and held in their operative position by the springs 18.

Inasmuch as the bundles of interfolded sheets delivered from the interfolding machine are somewhat bulky and inconvenient to handle without disarrangement, I

propose to position the present machine adjacent the interfolding machine and connect it thereto by means of the slide 19 which projects over and forms a cover for the table 1. This permits the bundles which are separated from the continuous stock of the intert'olding machine to he slid on to the table where they are compressed and labeled.

To further facilitate the operation of this machine. it is proposed to suitably position a stock of labels below the table 1, and for the purpose of conveniently permitting positioning of the labels on the table, 1 provide the hand openings 20 in the top that permit the operator to reach through and select a label, which is then drawn up between the top and yieldable grip 15. through the opening 10 to the position shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. thus leaving one end of the label yieldably held between the grip 17 and the underside of the table.

After the label has been positioned on the table. as shown in Figure l. a bundle of interfolded sheets is slid on to the table from the interfolding machine and is positioned on the label, the same. being held by the yieldable grip 15, as illustrated in Figure 4. The removable presscr is then placed on the slidable blocks and the levers S are oscillated to the position illustrated in Figure 5. thereby sliding the blocks and presser carried thereon forwardly to press the hundle against the stop :2. The levers 1% are then actuated whereby the folder 11 is oscillated to its vertical position. shown in Figure thereby withdrawing that end of the label held by the grip 17 and carrying the same upward. The prcsser 7 is then removed from the blocks leaving the ends of the labels free, as shown in Figure 7. which ends are then folded over and pasted; in any suitable manner. as shown in Figure 8. This completes the labeling operation and the bundle is then ready to be cutinto finished commercial packages.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be noted that a very simple and economical machine has been devised by which the bundles of interfolded sheets may be quickly and conveniently pressed and labeled.

I claim:

1. A. machine of the character described comprising a table adapted to receive a label and a bundle of"intertolded paper,

said table being provided with an elongated opening in its top. a stop on the table, a presser operating in conjunction with the stop to compress the bundle and an oscillatory folder positioned in the said opening for folding the label on the bundle, said folder being normally flush with the top of the table whereby the label is supported.

2. A machine of the character described comprising a table adapted to receive a label and a bundle of interfolded paper. a stop on the table, a pair of blocks slidable on the table. a removable presscr carried by said blocks and operating in conjunction with said stop to compress a bundle within the label, and mains for folding the label on the bundle.

A machine of the character described comprising a table. adapted to receive a label and a bundle of interl'olded paper, said table being provided with an elongated opening, a folder normally positioned in said opening and forming a closure for the same and means or compressing the bundle within the label.

4. A machine of the character described comprising a table adapted to receive a label and a bundle of intert'olded paper, means for yieldably holding one end of the label, a stop on the table, a removable presser slidable on the table and operating in conjunction with the stop to compress the bundle and an oscillatory folder adapted to withdraw the end of the label from the yieldable holding means and told the same on the bundle.

5. machine of the character described comprising a table adapted to receive a label and a bundle of intertolded paper. means for vieldably holding one end of the label, means. for compressing the bundle on the label, an oscillatory folder adapted to withdraw the end of the label from the yieldably holding means and folding the same on the bundle.

6. machine of the character described comprising a table adapted to receive av label and a bundle of iutertoldcd paper. means for compressing the bundle. resilient means for gripping one end of the label and means for withdrawing said end of the label from the resilient gripping means and folding the same on the bundle.

A machine. of the character described comprising av table adapted to receive a label and a bundle. of inter-folded paper. a prcsser for compressing the bundle on the label prior to folding the latter on the bundle, and means for folding one end of the label on the bundle, said means also serving to retain the bundle in compressed condition when said presser is withdrawn from the bundle.

8. A machine of the character described also serving to hold the bundle in compressed position when said presser is removed.
