d es M I fivenzoz;
AM. FHOM-UTHMRAF/l/C LaN, Yx'asmmz's PROCESS! I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS ORTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS/ IMPROVEMENT IN BILL AND PAPER FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,230, dated December 2,1 873; application filed October 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS ORTON, of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill and Paper Files, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to certain improvements in hooks for filing papers, such as re ceipts, memorandums, letters, 850.; and it consists in a wire hook attached to a bracket adapted to be secured to or suspended upon a wall, and provided with a curved flat spring, one end of which is fixed to the bracket by a screw or rivet, and the other end is curved upward, outward, and downward, so as to bear against the inner side of the hook, and has its extremity curved inward, so that papers may be readily placed upon or removed from the hook with one hand, without the necessity of using the other hand to press back the spring.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. V
A represents a bracket, which may be either cast or stamped out from plate metal. It is formed with three lugs, a a a, the first two of which are used for suspending it or securing it to the wall by means of screws or nails. The lower central portion of the bracket is made thicker than the other portion, and has formed in the top thereof a notch, a (see Fig.
2,) into which is inserted one end of the flat springB,which is then secured to the bracket by a screw or rivet, b, passing into the lug a The hook C has its inner end attached to the bracket in the ordinary manner. The spring B is curved upward, then outward, and then downward, so as to bear against the inner side of the upper portion of the hook just below the point, and prevent accidental displacement of papers from the hook. The extreme end of the spring is curved inward, as shown in Fig. 2, in consequence of which papers may be readily placed upon and removed from the hook with one hand, rendering it entirely unnecessary to use the other hand to press back the spring out of the-way.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent- The flat spring B, having its fixed end secured to the bracket by means of the notch a and screw b, and its free end curved inward, as shown and described,for the purpose specified.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto affix my signature.
} THOS. ORTON. Vvitnesses JA's. S. DICKINSEN, Gno. O. FELTON.
