BAND-saw GUIDE AND GUARD.
Application filed December 8, 1921.
To all to 720m it may concern Be it known that I, FREDRIGKN. BRENNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tell City, in the county of Perry and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Band-Saw Guide and Guard, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to band-saw guides and guards, and more specifically to an i1nproveddevice combining a band-saw guide and guard.
One object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which perfectly guides the cutting portion of a band-saw while cushioningthe same for permitting a limited and .yieldingly resisting rearward movement of this cutting portion.
- A further object is to provide a device of this character which eliminates or greatly reduces friction between the sawand the guide.
A further object is to provide a device of this character whose guiding elements are individually adjustable and provided with individual lubricating means.
. A further object is to provide a device of this character whose connection with its support is capable of an infinite number of'adj ustments both vertically and horizontally.
A further object is to provide a device of this: character which is adjustable to fit band-saws of different thicknesses, also to provide new wearing parts on the saw-backguide when grooves have worn therein.
Other objects and advantages will be pointed out or implied in the following details of description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 9 is a detail plan view illustrating one of the rollers which constitutes an element of the saw-back-guide, also the supporting axle and plungers for this. roller.
Referring to these drawings in detail, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views, and in which the saw is indicated in broken lines at S, for showing the application of the device, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and adjustable relation of parts, as will now be fully described in the following:
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, it will be seen that the main body 1 is provided with a front cover 2, the latter being formed of two plates which are spaced from one another, as indicated at 3, to provide a passage which registers with a slot 1 in the upper side or top of the body or hollow casing 1. The plates 2 are provided withupwardly extending portions 5 between which the teeth of the saw travel, so that these plates'form a guard to prevent an op erator or other person from coming into contact with the saw-teeth which are thus guarded; it being understood that the saw travels in the passage provided by the openings 3 and 4, also through an opening 6 in the bottom of the casing 1.
Upper and lower pairs of saw guides or rollers 7 and 8 are mounted in the casing 1, preferably on ball bearings, as indicated in Fig. 7 including balls 9, cones 10, a screwthreaded shaft 11 for each of these rollers, andlock-nuts 12 for each roller. One shaft 11 of each pair is provided with an eccentrio journal portion 13, these shafts being journaled in bearings 14: which are formed in the rear part of the casing 1, and are rotatable in these bearings for bringing these rollers ,7 and 8 of each pair in the proper spaced relation for fitting saws of different thicknesses, it being understood that the saw S travels between the rollers of each pair while passing through the passages 3-4: and 6. Set screws 15 are provided for securing the shafts 11 in adjusted position.
The saw-back-guide preferably comprises a pair of rollers 16 which are preferably mounted on ball-bearings 9-10-17-12, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The screw-threaded shaft 17 of each roller 16 is preferably slabbed at 18 to provide seats against which set-screws 19 are seated for holding these shafts 17 in different longitudinal adjustsupport 32 which is provided with a set ments while prerenting them from rotating.
By adjusting these shafts longitudinally,
new portions of the rollers 16 can be ln'ought into the saw-guiding position when spectively, in different longitudinal adjustm'ents while preventing rotation thereof. The object of longitudinally adjusting the elements 16, 21 and 22 is to compensate for saws of different widths.
The casing l is preferably supportedby an eccentric shaft 27 which has one end portion fitted in an opening, or hearing 28 in the central rearportion of the casing 1, the casing also being provided with a boss 30 into which is fitted a set screw 31 which bears upon the shaft 27 and holds it against accidental rotation or longitudinal movement. The outer end portion of the shaft 27 is preferably engaged with adepending screw 33 for holding the members 27 and against accidental movement with respect to one another. By loosening the set- screws 31 and 33, then turningthe shaft 27, the casing l. and the parts-carried thereby are freed for adjustment both vertically and horizontally. By adjusting the device vertically with respect to the saw, more or less cutting surface of the saw is exposed or made available between this device and the saw-table T; By adjusting the device laterally of the saw, the latter can be properly located bctween the rollers 7 and 8 so as to prevent unduelateral pressure of the saw against any one'or two of these rollers. By adjusting the casing 1 forward or rearward, and appropriately adjusting, the sawbacloguide, in the manner previously'described, the saw an be held in proper relation to the pulleys (not shown) while the saw-teeth are properly guarded by the plates 2.
Referring again to Fig. 7, and especially to the eccentric 13 whereby the adjustment of one of the'rollers 7 and 8 of each pair is obtained, it 12 is circular 111g 34 of each to obtain this lateral adjustment of the rollers 7 and 8, either the openings 34: must,
be sufficiently large to permit of such adjustment, or the bolts 35 pass through openings 36 (in the plates 2) of sufficient size to permit one or both of the plates 2 to move with the outer nuts 12 when these bolts 85 are loosened. i
For the purpose of properly lubricating the ball-bearings of the rollers 7, 8 and 16, their shafts 11 and 17 are referably providedwith ducts 87, throug ii which lubricating grease can be forced by means of giease c11ps 39 of any appropriate or well known kind. These grease-cups have their outlets registering with the ducts 87, and by screwing up the covers of the greasecups, grease is forced through these ducts to the interior of the guiding rollers so that the ball-bearings may be kept properly lubricated The grease-cups of the shafts 17 also constitute knobs whereby these shafts can be adjusted longitudinally.
Although Ihave shown theset- screws 15, 31 and 19 as socket-screws, that is, provided with sockets to lit a socket-wrench, any appropriate form of screw or securing means may be employed for holding the several parts in adjustment. Moreover, it is not intended to limit this invention to the exact details of construction and arrangement here described and shown, but changes may be made within the scope of the inventive ideas as implied and claimed.
- What I claim as my invention is:
In a saw guiding device, the combination of upper and lower pairs of rollers, the rollers of each pair being spaced for receiving and guiding asaw therebetween, a saw-back-guide mounted between the upper and lower pairs of rollers, this saW-bacle guide comprising a roller having its axis at rightanglesto a plane coinciding with the spaces between the rollersof the upper and lower'pairs, and means for supporting the saw-back-guide and for adjusting the same so as to bring differentpartsthereof in position to contact with the back of the saw when the latter istraveling in the space between the rollers of said pairs, said means being spring pressed in the forward direction for yieldingly resisting backward movement of the saw.
