Application led J'anuary,7, 1922. Serial 110.527,69?.
To @from t may concern:
Beit known that we,FRA.NK Torn. and KROLY interinos, lcitizen-s offHungary, re-
siding at Phoenixville, in the county :of
Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented vcertain ,new vand useful; Improvements in Clotheslines, of-'which the follow-,-y
ing isa specification. This 'invention relates generally to clotheslines, having particular reference tothe sup- .t
porting thereof.
.The inve-ntion has for an object to provide A a novel .arrangement in which .a `single clothesline is stretched between facingwalls,
.1. such as the walls of. courts or light wells for n j v12jwhen the dogis swung to approximately f 1 vertical position with respect to the rod. f Y
use by different families.. e
'Other objects 'relate tov theadjustability of the lsupports for conveniency vin hanging- .clothes on the line, and to they locking of theA line supports.y j .f A
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the ob-j ects and advantages thereof, reference will beh'ad tothe following description and accompanying drawings, and
to the appended claims in which thefvarious 'l novel featuresl of the invention are more particularly set forth.y
Fig 1 of the drawings is .a transverse vertical sectional view through the windows of opposed apartments, showing our improved clothesline in place.
j F ig. 2 is a face view 'of the support, showing in face elevation a and window frame.- l n Fig. 3 is atop plan view thereofshowing the wall in horizontal section.
Fig. 4 is enlarged fragmentary vertical section on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 3. l
In the embodiment of the invention herein set forth we mount on the wall 10, adjacent the window opening 11, a pair of vertically spaced rods 12 extending horizontally along the wall and fixed at their ends in brackets 13 rigid inthe wall. fy e Upon these rods a crosshead 15 is mounted to slide freely and is formed with an angular pulley supporting arm 16 whose kouter -end projects across the window opening 11 when `the crosshead is moved to the adjacent ends of the rods 12. n
Suspended from this arm 16 is a horizontal pulley 17 having serrations or notches 18 closely spaced around thek periphery thereof and with the intervening walls tapered to wedge shape as at 19.
Formed integral with the pulley 17, on
portion of the wall the top. face thereof,"is a disk projection 20- ihaving undercut notches or recesses 21 spacedaround its periphery and adapted to be engaged by' a lockingdevice whereby the vTof-this end weprovide a vdog 23 hinged l between its ends as at 241 on the crosshead arm 16? and having onej end projecting' through. a slot 25 in thek crosshead 15 and adapted to @bite against the adjacent yrods 'Connected 'to the opposite end of thedo-g 23 `isjalink 26 which extends along the-*crosshead varm 16 and is connectedto ai locking arm 27.: mounted ronv the end of crosshead armv and adaptedvtofha-vef one `end laterally oiiset as'at28 to engage the-notches disk 20, the opposite endvbeing in the vform ofv a handle 29. lThe arm 27 is adapted to have a both swinging and longitudinal movement into and out of engagement with the notched disk 20 and to this endk it lis mounted by means of a pin 30 carried by a p'airof ears 81 projecting from the part 16, this pin kproj ecting through al longitudinal slot 32 in the "arm 27. v Y
We preferably arrange the clothesline, as
shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, extending between two facing-apartments to be used by the occupants of either apartment as dev sired, the wall of each apartment having one r of the above described `supports mounted thereon, the line being indicated at 35 as looped around the pulleys 17. When clothes are'to be hung on the line, the lock- 'ing arm 27 is swung to release the Ado,r ;-23 from rods 12 and the crossheadl is moved along the rods 12 to bring the pulley 17 in front'o-f thewindow opening` 11. The f clothes are then hung on the line, the construct-ion of the pulley enabling the clothes to pass therea'round, the pins being accommodated in the recesses 18, so that both reaches of the line may be used.` After the clothes lhave'been hung on the line the arm 27 is swung tolock both the pulley 17 against rotation and the crosshead 15 on the rods` 12. Use of the line by the person in they opposite apartment is thus prevented until the line is freed. When the clothes are to be removed, thepulley 17 is freed, land after the clothes are removed the orossheald is shoved back along thev rods l2, withdrawing the pulley from in front. of vthe Window.
The arm 27 is' raised'untilitsend28`is alcove the disfl; 2() and then swung to lock dog-:23 to the yrods l2, holding the crosshead against movement but Vallowing thepulleys to rotateffreely, permitting subsequent use of the line by, either party, the end- 'Q8 of anni 27 resting freely on the disk 20.
Having thus describedour invention what vWe claim as, newI and desire tocprotectby Letters Patent of therUnited States is `:as follows:
l. ln a device of the 'class'hdescrifbedyla pulley adapted tolravea clotheslinelooped pulleyfto said support, means for locking'- fsaid pulley against rotation,` connecting *therear-ound, a support on *whichssaidf pulley is movably mounted to permit of positioning the pulley in front of or tooneside of'a Window opening, means -`for'looking :said
means between said locking means, anda handle adapted to operateesaicl connecting" means.
