knear the ,middle ofthe .,machine, and showcitizen of `the United Statesresidin Iin Elizabeth, in the county of Union 'and tateL of New'Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a' specilication.v` o y Thisinvention relates to typewriting machines, and especially'to tabulating mechanism' therefor. v
yHeretofore, diculty has been experienced in correctly locating they carriage in the "selected denominational position,` this ybeing l due to the fact that at one time thetabulaey ing mechanism is operated to select' a position in asucoeedlng column after an operated type-bar returns to its normal position,
and that at another time the tabulating mechanism is operated before the return `oi. the type-bar. 4This causes different relations to exist betweenthe loose dog andthe es- Oa'pement wheelv of the carriage escapement .mechanism at times when the tabulating mechanism is operated, which results inincorrectly positioning the carriage byone letter-space when lthe carriageescapement mechanism is in an abnormal position".A f
To overcome' this, it has been proposed to render the tabulating mechanism ineffective by locking it until the type-key, and consequently'the escapement mechanism. has been restored to normal position. VIn such devices, the speed of thetypist lis retarded, which results from the fact that the tabulatorkeys are ineffective or out of use until the type-key returns to normal position. f
An objectv of the present invention is to insure the correct positioning of the Acarriage without rendering the tabulating mechanism ineffective, lso as not to interferewith the speed of the typist.
In carrying out the invention, there is pro'- vided means to insure the same relation 'between the Yescapement wheel andthe idogrocker, irrespectivev of the condition `ofthe type-bar when a "tabulator' key is operated.
To this end. a connection may be made beeV tween the ltabul'ating mechanism and the dog-rocker of the escapement mechanismv to rock said dog-rocker, to' movethe' loose dog out 'ofengagement with the escapement wheelv at each depression O a tabulator key.

and may-,comprise a plurality of denomination-selecting keys 44, each being provided with a key-lever 'to be swung about a lpivot46, to raisea plunger 47, having at its upper end a denomination-stop 48, which is brought intothe path of column-stops 50 adjustably mounted :on a stop-bar 51, the latter beine' supported on the typewriter carriage 20. lVhen a tabula-tor key 44v is operated, the carriage-is released by means of a -iiniyersal bar 52', engaged by any one of the plungcrs v47, to rock a shaft 53 and pull downwardlyon a link 54, connected to an armv extendingy from said shaft. The upper.v end ofthe link 54 is connectedto a lever 5,6, which is swung about its pivot 57 to raise the feed-rack 36 out of mesh with the` pinion 35V, bymeans of a roller 58 mounted at the forward end of said lever. Tin-guard against the incorrect positioning of the carriage. there is provided an upwardly-proiecting arm GO on the carriage-release rock-shaft 53,- which is moved forwardly when a tabulator key is operated, and enthe rear face of the dog-rocker 28 below its pivot 43 (Figure 2), to swing the upper end of the dog-rocker rearwardly, to .move theloose dog 30 ofthe escapem'ent mechanism ont of engagement with the escapeinent wheel 33, thus insuring that the same relation will exist between the loose d and the esca peinent wheel at each. tabulat generation. irrespective of the condition (effective or ineHective) of the typekey.
