STOVE-LID LIFTER.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Canaries Sean-u, a citizen ofHungary, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Penn-- .lid when removing the same.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a stove lid lifter of the above. kind which is of extremely simple construction and which will prove durable and efficient in use.
Another object of the invent-ion is to provide a stove lid lifter composed of a minimum number of simplcitnd durable parts which may be cheaply manufactured and assembled and conveniently operated for lifting lids of stoves without danger of drop ping the latter.
With the above general objects in view the invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with accompanying drawing, and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

In using the device. the handle 6 is grasped by the user and the jaw-7 is inserted in the under cutrecess usually provided 1n stove lids so that the free end of the aw 7 engages the under surface of the top wall of the recess, this being permitted by depression of the head 14 so thatthe jaw 9 is swung away from the jaw 7 as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1. It will be understood that the.

the spring 16 will pull upwardlv upon the rod 12 so as to swing the jaw 9 toward the jaw 7 for engaging the free end of said jaw 9 with the upper surface of the top wall of said recess so that the lid will be effectively clamped. Obviously the lid may then be lifted without danger of dropping the same, the spring 16 being; of relatively great strength for this purpose.
Referring to Figures 3 and 4. the invention embodies the body member 5' with the integral handle 6 at one end and the integral jaw 7' at the other end, the handle (3 and, jaw 7' being extended in opposite directions as in Figure 1. The body portion 5 is provided with a longitudinal bore 11 in which is slidably mounted a push rod 12 having a push button or head 14' upon its upper end and pivotally attached as at 13' to the adjacent end of the pivoted jaw 9' which is mounted as at 10 in the recess 8 of the integral jaw 7. Thus far described, the invention is the same as in Figure l, but .instead of utilizing a helical spring 16 as shown in Figure 1 between the head 14 and body member 5, the same is dispensed with in Figure 3 and a leaf spring 16 is employed between the body member 5 and jaw 9 as shown. In order to provide for attachment of the spring 16, the body portion 5' is provided with a pair of spaced ears 1? connected by a pin 18 and upon which one end of the spring 16 is secured, the other end of said spring being secured upon a similar pin 19 connecting a pair of spaced ears 20 provided upon the jaw 9' intermediate the free ends of the latter and a pivot pin thereof. The spring 16' is of upwardly and outwardly curved form and of sufficient strength to urge the jaw 9 toward the jaw l" with considerable force so that the free ends of the aws will effectively clamp against the opposite faces of the top wall of the under cut recess of the stove lid. The operation in connection with this form is substantially the same as with the form in Figure 1 above described. From theforegoing description, it is believed thatathe construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appre ciated by those skilled in the art.
Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the in vention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus fully. described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A stove lid lifter comprising a bot portion having a longitudinal bore with ja push rod slidably disposed t-h' rein and terminating above the upper en of the body portionand'below the lower end of said body portion, a handle integral with and extending rearwardly from one end of the body '.portion in one direction, a jaw member rigid with the opposite end of the body portion and extending laterally from the latter in the opposite direction, said jaw member havinga transverse recess, a second jaw member pivotally mounted in the recess of the first named jaw member and arranged so that the free ends of said jaw members may clampingly engage opposite faces of the top wall of the under cut grooves of a stove lid, the lower end of the push rod being pivotally attached to the inner end of said p1v-\ oted jaw whereby depression of'the push rod will cause swinging movement of the pivoted jaw away from the first named jaw, and'yielda-ble means normally urging the pivoted jaw toward said first namedjaw.
2. Astove lid lifter comprising a body portion having a longitudipal bore with a push rod slidably disposed therein and'terminating above the upper end of the body portion and below the lower end of saidbody portion, a handle integral with and extending rearwardly from one end of the body port-ion in one direction, a jaw member rigid with the opposite end of the body portion and extending laterally from the latter in the opposite direction, said jaw member having a transverse recess, a second jaw member pivotally mounted in the recess of the first named jaw member and arranged so that the free ends of said jaw members may clampingly engage opposite faces of the to wall of the under cut grooves of a stove id, the lower end of the push rod being pivotally attached to the inner end of said pivoted jaw whereby depression of the push rod will cause swinging movement of the pivoted jaw away from thefirst named jaw, and yieldable means normally urging the pivoted jaw toward said first named jaw, said jaws being of oppositely curved formation with the pivoted jaw overlying the first named jaw.

said jaws being of oppositely curved formation with the pivoted jaws overlying the first named jaw, and said first named jaw and handle extending at an obtuse angle from the body portion.
4. A stove lid lifter comprising a body portion having a longitudinal bore with a push rod slidably disposed therein and terextending rearwardly-from one end of the body portion in one direction, a jaw member rigid with the opposite end of the body portion and extending laterally from the latter in the opposite direction, said jaw member having a transverse recess, a second jaw member pivotally mounted in the recess of the first named jaw member and arranged so that the free ends of said jaw members may clampingly engage opposite faces of the top wall of the under cut grooves of a stove lid, the lower end of the push rod' being p-ivotally attached to the inner end of said pivoted jaw whereby depression of the push rod will cause swinging movement of the pivoted 1jaw away from the first named jaw,
and yie dable means normally urging the pivoted jaw toward said first named jaw, the pivoted jaw and the body portion being each provided with a 'pair'of spaced ears connected by a pin, and said yieldable means for urging the pivotal jaw: toward the first named jaw comprising an arcuate leaf spring having the ends thereof secured on said ear connecting pins.
