; T all w ham it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN' REECE, a citizen of the United States,'residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Seat Pad, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to seat pads.

An object of the invention is to provide an improved removable and interchangeable portable seat pad comprising a seat member and a back member pivotally united along adjacent edges and arranged so that they may be folded flat one against the other in either direction, and each member including a body portion of suflicient. flexibility to permit bending to obtain proper adjustment to the curvature of the seat to which the pad may be applied, and of suflicient stiffness so that either member will remain extended vertically.

- In the embodiment of the invention shown my improved seat pad comprises a member 1 and a separate member 2. The members 1 and 2 may be and preferably aI'Gpf' pOI'OUS material and are characterized 'by suflicient flexibility to bend readily to the contour and shape of the maybe used, and one or both being characterized by suflicient stiffness so that it will remain in raised position without folding or crumpling upon itself. Straw matting is an appropriate material as it possesses the desired porosity and is characterized by sufliseat or support upon which they terial is secured by lines of stitching 5 but the strips 4 are not necessary at the outer edges of the seat and back members and are therefore omitted, from the outer edges. As stated the strips 4 are relatively wide so that thelines of stitching 5 near the inner edges of the strips 4 are relatively considerable distances from the edges of the members 1 and 2. The marginal reinforcements 3 are folded to enclose the marginal edges or borders of the members 1 and 2 and to enclose the outer edges of the strips 4.; Lines of stitching 6 passing through the folded edges of the reinforcements 3 andthrough the interposed portions of the wide non-elastic strips 4 securely hold the reinforcements 3 on the edges of said members. The strips 4 afford proper anchorage for the lines of stitching 6 preventing the reinforcements 3 from tearing ofi'.

The hinge or pivotal connection for the members 1 and 2 is designed and intended to permit said members to be folded flat one upon the other in either direction, and comrises a construction and arrangement by which the adjacent marginal edges of the members I and 2 are spaced sufliciently to permit such folding: The hinge shown comprises two separate flexible strips 7 united by a row of stitching 8 formed longitudinally the marginal edges of the'two members and 2.

The row of stiching 8 holds portions of the strips 7 between the adjacent edges of the pad members and forms a spacer permitting the pad members to be folded flat one upon the other in either direction. This construction and arrangement, distinguishing my invention from others, permits the pad to be reversed to use either side thereof as the seating surface and permits the back member to be folded flat upon the seat member irrespective of the side used as the seating surface of the ad. This highly desirable feature practically doubles the life or period of usefulness of the pad, since in the case its usefulness.

From the foregoing it is plain that my invention adequately obtains all of its intended objects and advanta es. It is not so restricted that any speci c material must be used to form the seating and back members. It is important only that the seating and back members shall be characterized as mentioned so as to adapt the pad for use upon seats of nearly every construction and form.

I do not restrict myself unessentially, but .what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is V 1. As an article of manufacture, a seat pad comprising a seating member and a back member, each of which is characterized by suflicient stiflness to remain extended vertically and by sufficient flexibility to permit bending to the curvature of the seat and back of the support to which it may be applied, a border of flexible material enclosing the adjacent edge of each of said members, a pair of hinge strips covering said borders and having their edges stitched to said members respectively beyond said borders, and said strips also being stitched to' said members and to said borders near the marginal edges of said members, and a row of stitching uniting said hinge strips and holding said strips together between the adjacent edges of said members and separating said borders from each other.

As an article of manufacture, a seat pad comprising a seating member and a back member, each of which is characterized by sufficient stiffness to remain extended vertically and by suflicient flexibility to permit bending to the curvature of the seat and back of the support to which it may be applied, a border of flexible material enclosing the adjacent edge of each of said members, a pair of hinge strips covering said borders and having their edges stitched to said members respectively beyond said borders, said strips also being stitched to said members and to said borders near the marginal edges of said members, a row of stitching uniting said hinge strips and holding said stri s together between the. adjacent edges of said members and separating said borders from each other, and relatively wide strips of flexible material secured to the side and adjacent edges of said members respectively.

As an article of manufacture, a seat pad comprising a seating member and a back member, each of which is characterized by sufiicient stiffness to remain extended vertically and by suflicient flexibility to permit bending to the curvature of the seat and back of the support to which it may be applied, a border of flexible material enclosing the adjacent edge of each of said members, a pair of hinge strips covering said borders and having their edges stitched to said members respectively beyond said borders, and said strips also being stitched to said members and to said borders near the marginal edges of said members, a rowof stitching uniting said hinge strips and holding said strips together between the adjacent edges of said members and separating said borders from each other, relatively wide strips of flexible material secured to the side and adjacent edges of said members respectively, and relatively narrow continuations of said borders enclosing the outer edges of said wide strips along the side and adjacent edges of said members respectively.
