Description

UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KONRAD KIEFER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOOKING-CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,506, dated March 25, 1856.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, KONRAD KIEFER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Rocking-Chairs; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a vertical sect-ion of a rocking chair with my improvement applied, and Fig. 2 a plan or top view of the same.
The letters of reference refer to the same parts wherever they occur.
A represents a rocking chair which may be of the usual construction and C C two round metal rods which move in bearings (a, a) on the inner side strips (b, 5,) of the back of the chair. To the lower ends of the rods C, C, are attached pinions (0, c) one to each rod, and these pinions gear into toothed wheels (CZ, d) which are on the ends of a horizontal shaft D, which has its bearings in the back legs of the chair.
One of the wheels (d) has a pin (e) projecting from its outside surface, and fitting in a hole in a sliding plate E which is secured to one of the inner surfaces of the chair by means of screws passing through slots (f, f,) in the plate.
A small rod (g) works loosely in an eye (h) attached to t-he inner side of the chair just below its seat. To the lower end of this rod is pivoted a lever of the third kind its end rest-ing in a hook (7c) in the plate E with its fulcrum (n) at the bottom of a frame or loop to which it is pivoted. A spring Z) acting by its expansion, is coiled around the lower portion of t-he rod g, to which it is attached at its upper end.
From movable cylinders r, fr', upon the round rods C, C, project horizontal arms F, F, provided wit-h fans (G, G.) The cylinders r, 71, have set screws by which the fans may be readily fixed upon the rods at any desired elevation and in various positions in the plane of their motion. By this arrangement the occupant of the chair can not only regulate the application of the agitated air with reference to his own size or position in the chair, or to the part of his person where it may be most agreeable at the time but he can also modify or temper the effect upon himself or those in his immediate vicinity by moving the fans laterally upon the rod to bring them nearer to him or to remove them farther off. By loosening `the thumb or set screw of either of the cylinders the rod will move freely therein without operating the fan.
The shaft D has an arm II projecting forward also carrying a fan I the object of which is to keep the lower extremities cool and comfortable. The fan can be readily removed when not required.
The shape of the bottom of the flange O, or lower edge of the plate E which rests upon the floor when in action is a curve having a common plane tangent to the rocker of the chair when both the plate E, and the rocker touch the floor. In order to avoid excessive length in the curve of the plate, it is very slightly beveled off, which is compensated by making the slots loose so as to permit play of the plat-e, or by making the slots inclined at an angle to each other as shown in Fig. l.
When the chair is rocked backward the plate E owing to the peculiar form and arrangement of the flange O, comes to the ioor without shock, and moves in its slots as the chair inclines backward resuming its former position as the chair is rocked for ward, by its own gravity aided in the present instance by the spring Z, which however may be dispensed with. A rotary reciprocating motion is thus communicated to the fan shafts C, C, and D through the wheels and pinions before described.
Having thus fully described my improvements what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The fans G, when made adjustable, and when arranged and operated substantially as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
2. The employment of a fan beneath the seat constructed, and arranged substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
KONRAD KIEFER.
Vitnesses Jos. GEO. MASON, WILLIAM TUsoH.
