Be it known that I, ALBERT C. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new` and useful Improvements in a Displaying Device, of which the following isla specification.

The present invention relates to an illuminated displaying device adapted to be situated upon an automobile for the purpose of supporting a license tag and direction indicating means.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a displaying device of this nature constructed so that the samemay be lengthened if desired so as to accommodate license tags or plates 'of different lengths.

Another important .object of the invention is to provide means for holding the casing in a desired adjusted position and a transparent strip for the casing which Will automatically adjust itself to accommodate the length of the casing to which it has been adjusted.

Astill further object of the invention is to generally improve upon illuminated casings of this nature by providing a device Which Will be extremely simple and eificient in construction, reliable inoperation, coniparatively inexpensive to manufacture, durable and Well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. 7

With the above and numerous other objects in view as Will appear as the ydescription progresses, thel invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail it Will be seen that the casing of the displaying device is formed of a plurality of sections and for the purpose of convenience I have only shown three sections namely the pairfof end sections 1 and 2 and the intermediatesection 3. The rear end of each section is closed While the front end thereof is open and provided With flanges 4 extending from the longitudinal edges. rlhe section 2 is divided into three compartments by means of the partitions 5 in each of Which there is situated a source of illuminationin the form f -of an electric bulb as indicated at 6. The other end section 1 is provided With a slot 12 in its end for the insertion of the license tag or numberplate 13A Which is.:k

perforated in theform of numerals and letters as is shown to advantage in Figure 1 so that rays of light may penetrate therethrough. A pin 14 is vertically disposed in the 'section 2 and a flexible transparent strip 15 is termediate its ends this lazy tongs mechanism is ed to the intermediate casing by a bolt 2l and also to the end section l by a bolt 22 thereby preventing the fulcruming ot the arms of the lazy tongs mechanism and keeping the three sections in adjusted positions in respect to each other. It it should `be found necessary to lengthen the casing the bolts 2l and 22 are removed thereby allowing the lazy tongs mechanism to be free to operate and the sections may be slightly separated from each other.` so as to accommodate the length of the license plate and at the same time the transparent strip l5 will partially unwind from the pin la to accommodate the new length of the casing. The bolts 21 and may then be pierced through the backs oit the various sections and locked again in position by their nuts. The sections will thus be held in adjusted positions and the license plate would prevent any tendency of them to sag in relation to each other.

In order to attach the casing to an automobile I have provided a suitable bracket 25 which is preferably attached to the intermediate section 3. The transparent strip l5 is provided with a protective edge 16 so as to prevent the same from becoming easily torn, it being understood that the strip l5 would probably be constructed of some suoli material as Celluloid. As is shown to advantage in Figure S the strip l5 and the license tag 13 are securedly locked in place by a screw 26 which presses these two members together against an angle iron 27 carried in the section l adjacent its end. lllhen the screw 26 is loosened the license tag may be easily removed through the slot 12.

Although I have described my invention with some degree of particularity it is to be understood that the example which I have illustrated has merely been given by preference and it is, therefore, to be understood that numerous changes in the details of construction and the combination and arrangement o parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as hereinafter claimed.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is l. A displaying device of the class described comprising a plurality ol sections, a lazy tongs mechanism having its ends suitably attached to the end sections and its intermediate portion detachably attached to the intermediate section whereby the intermediate section may be removed and the end sections brought together in the manner and for the purpose specified.

A displaying device of the class described comprising a pair of end sections, an intermediate section, said sections being positioned in end to endfrelation, a lazy tongs mechanism disposed interiorly of the sections having its ends pivotally connected to the end sections and its intermediate portion detachably connected to the intermediate section whereby the intermediate section may be removed and the end sections brought together in the manner and for the purpose specified.

A displaying device of the class described comprising a pair of end sections, an intermediate section, said sections being positioned in end to end relation, a lazy tongs mechanism disposed interiorly of the sections having its ends pivotally connected to the end sections and .its intermediate portion detachably connected to the intermediate section whereby the intermediate section may be removed and the end sectionsV brought together, and an adjustable transparent member associated withl said sections.

In combination, a plurality of sections disposed in end to end relation for Jforming a casing, the intermediate sections being removable so that the other sections may be brought together, means for holding the sections in relation to each other, and a flexible transparent member associated with the sections so as to be adjustable in relation thereto as the casing is lengthened or shortened by the addition of or removal of the intermediate sections in the manner and for the purpose specified.
