C. F. RIED ATTACHMENT FOR USE WITH TRACTOR DHAWN BINDERS Filed Nov. 18, 1920 ATTORNEYS Patented llt/liar. 20 i923.,
CHRISTIAN F. RIED, F IPALMYRA, NEBRASKA.
ATTACHMENT FOR USE WITH.' TRACTOR-DRAWN BINDERS.
Application led November 18, 1920. Serial No. 424,955.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that l, CHRISTIAN F. Rino, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Palmyra., in the county of @toe and State oit' Nebraska, have invented a new and lmproved Attachment for Use with Tractor- Drawn Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to means for actuating the binder tilting means, the reel raising and lowering means and the bundle discharging means.
'l he general object of my invention is to provide an attachment adapted to be interposed between the binder and tractor to be accessible by the tractor-man positioned at the rear of the tractor, said attachment comprising manually operable levers having means to connect the same respectively with the binder tilting means, as well as with the reel raising and lowering means and the bundle discharging means, whereby the binder may be completely controlled by the tractor-man from his position on the tractor, thereby avoiding the necessity of having a man on the binder for controlling the binder means referred to.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide an embodiment ot the invention of such acharacter as to :facilitate the installation of the attachment by mounting it on the binder tongue, and providing at the same time tor the ready connection ot the respective levers with the binder parts.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the drawing is merely illustrative of one example of my invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an attachment embodying my invention, the same being shown in full lines, said view indicating in dotted lines parts of the tractor and binder including' the parts on the binder with which connection is made by my attach- 45 ment.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment with parts ot the tractor and binder in dotted lines.
ln the illustrated example it is to be un- 50 derstood that my attachment may be employed in connection with any of the various known forms of binders. For the purpose of illustration l have shown the attachment employed in connection with a known 55 form of binder. The letter A designates generally the binder, B the rear portion ot' the tractor, and C the binder tongue connected with the tractor in any approved manner.
ln carrying out my invention in accordancewith the illustrated example I provide a supporting base plate 10, adapted to be mounted on the tongue C. Fulcrumed to the base plate 10 are levers 11 and 12 these levers having a common ulcrum. An additional lever 13 is fulcrumed at 14 on the tongue, but the handle of this lever will be situated normally in the vicinity of the handles of levers 11 and 12.
One lever, 11 for example, actuates the means for tilting the binder for which purpose in the illustrated example the connecting rod 15 is pivotally secured at one end to the lever 11 and extends rearwardly to the binder, the rear end of the rod beingpivotally connected at 16, in the case of the binder shown, to a lever a on the binder, said lever being fulcrumed at its opposite end as at b to the upper end of a bar or strap c which is rigidly secured at its lower and as at d to the binder tongue C and extends obliquely upwardly and rearwardly from said tongue. The lever a is pivotally secured between the ends thereof as at c to a longitudinal member f of the binder. With the lever 11 connected as described, with the frame bar f, it will readily be understood that when said lever is rocked on its fulcrum rearwardly or in the direction of the binder the rear end of the lever a on the binder will be thrown upwardly, said lever a, rocking on its fulcrum b and raising the front portion of the binder so that the binder will rock about the axis of the binder axle g and assume a tilted position. A reverse movement of the hand lever 11 will draw the rear end of lever a downwardly through the connection with the binder at e lowering the front end of the binder.
A second lever, 12, connects with the reel raising and lowering means on the binder for actuating said means. In the illustrated form connecting rod 17 is pivotally secured at its forward end to the lever 12 and the rear end of said connecting rod is p'ivotally secured as at 18 to the rear end of a lever h, the opposite end of which provides a bearing for the axle or shaft a' of the reel j. The lever 7L is rockably mounted between its ends as at Ic on the upper end of a post Z llO mounted at its lower end on the binder frame. In the illustrated binder having the said post Z said post is secured by the bolt e, which thus serves to secure both the lever a and the post Zto the bar f of the binder. With the lever 12 thus connected with the reel raising and lowering lever It the rearward movement of lever 12 will, through the rod 17, raise the rear end of the lever 7i, thereby lowering the opposite end carrying the reel j, and, obviously, the reverse movement of the lever 12 will result in raising the reel on the binder.
The third lever 13 controls the bundle discharging means of the binder for which purpose in the illustrated example of the invention a connecting rod 19 is secured at its forward end to said lever 13 and pivotally connected at its rear end as at 2O with an arm m, on a rod n operatively connected with a shaft 0, the operation of which effects the discharge of the bundle carrier designated generally by the letter p. Upon a rearward movement, the lever 13, through the rods 19 and n will effect the discharge of a bundle, the reverse movement of the said lever serving to restore the bundle carrier.
The base 10 in the preferred forni of the invention has a double arcuate rack 21 so that the notches at the outer and inner side of said arcuate rack can be engaged by the latches 22 and 23 of the respective levers 11 and 12, the latch 23 of one lever being so disposed as to engage the inner notches of the rack bar 21, while the latch 22 of the other lever engages the notches of the outer series. lt will be noted that levers 11 and 12 are bent laterally or offset intermediate their fulcrum and handles, this being done so that the rods 15 and 17, which are connected respectively to the binder tilting mechanism and the reel lifting mechanism, will be actuated in a perfectly straight line without any twist or lost motion.
l would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied Without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
For example, the levers 11, 12, 13 will vary in practice in lengths in accordance with the amplitude of movement to be imparted to the particular binder elements actuated thereby.
I claim:
1. An attachment to be interposed between a binder and a hauling tractor to actuate the manually operable parts of the binder for controlling the tilting of the binder, the raising and lowering of the reel, and the dumping of the bundles, said attachment comprising a base plate adapted to be mounted in position between the/binder and the tractor, a pair of independently operable levers having a common fulcrum on said base plate and placed side by side, a third lever pivoted at its lower end forward of the fulcra of the pair of levers, and connecting nieanseirtending from said levers` to the respective manually operable binder parts.
2. The combination with a binder and its tongue of a base plate secured to said tongue, a double arcuate racl rigidly mountedY on said plate, a pair of levers having a common fulcrum on said base plate and extending upwardly on opposite sides of said double rack, latches carried by said levers, the latch of one lever adapted to cooperate with the outer notches of the double rack and the latch of the other lever adapted similarly to cooperate with the inner notches of the rack, and connecting rods pivotally connected with the levers above the arcuate rack and extending rearwardly to the manually operable binder parts.
3. An appliance adapted to be interposed between a binder and a hauling tractor and upon the tongue of the binder, said appliance comprising a base plate adapted to be rigidly secured on the tongue, an inner and outer-toothed quadrant extending upwardly from said plate, a pair of levers pivoted on a common fulcrum at the angle of said quadrant and extending upwardly and forardly on opposite sides of the quadrant, said levers being oiiset laterally intermediate their fulcra and handle ends, manually operable latches operably mounted on said levers, the latch on one lever cooperating with the outer notches of the quad-rant and the latch on the other lever similarly cooperating with the inner notches of the quadrant, and rods pivotally connected at one end to said levers and extending rearwardly to the manually operable parts of the binder.
