Description

COAL BUNKER FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
FILED NOV- 4.1921.
Patented 6, 1923.
'ETE STATES FREDRIK LJ'UNGS'IBOM, OF BREVIK, LIIDINGON, AND ISIDOR BROBERG, OF TALLHYD- DAN, SKARSATRA, LIDIN'GON, SWEDEN, ASSIGNORS TO AKTIEBOLAGET LJUNG- STROMS ANGTURBIN, OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, A CORPORATION.
GOAL BUNKER FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Application filed November 4, 1921. Serial No. 512,949.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDRIK LJUNG- srnoar and lemon Bnoenno, both subjects of the King of Sweden, and residents, respectively, of Brevik, Lidin '011, Sweden, and Tallhyddan, Skarsatra, liidingon, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Bunkers for Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
In locomotives it has always proved difficult to arrange coal-bunkers for large amounts of coal and therefore the locomotives and the trains coupled to the same are compelled to stop for a longer time at most stations for coaling than otherwise would be necessary.
Especially it has been difficult to convey a large quantity of coal in case the tender of the locomotive is removed altogether or used for other purposes than that to which 'it is originally intended, which frequently is the case in locomotives provided with con denser devices, since such devices are generally placed on the tender.
This invention relates to a coal-bunker adapted to increase the store of coal on the boiler-carriage and consists in that the coalbunker is saddle-shaped and placed above the boiler near the stokers cabin preferably in front of the same, the coal-bunker being preferably provided with one or more channels extending in the longitudinal direction of the locomotive and facilitating the view from the drivers cabin in the direction of the line.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 shows a boiler carriage of a locomotive constructed according to the invention and Fig. 2 a detail view in section on the line AA in Fig. 1.
Relating to the drawings, 2 designates the coal-bunker placed above the boiler near the drivers cabin. In the drawing no driving engine is shown on the locomotive, because of the invention being independent of whether the locomotive is driven by means of turbines or provided with piston machinery and whether the driving engine is placed on the boiler carriage or on the following separate machinery carriage. The coal bunker is saddle-shaped and its fore wall 3 is preferably inclined in such manner that the coal on the emptying of the bunker slides down towards the door provided on the drivers cabin. The coal-bunker extends preferably so far forwards that the steam dome of the boiler can be placed within the same. At the top the coal-bunker is provided with shutters which by means of stirrups 4 are retained in raised position, as shown in Fig. 2, such shutters forming a suitable hopper at the coaling. In Fig. 2 the stippled circle 5 indicates the boiler. said figure besides showing in what manner the coal-bunker in the form shown therein affords larger spaces for coal and how the same may be easily removed and easily fit for coaling. Besides it appears from Fig. 1 how the coal-bunker to decrease the resistance of the air during the journey is constructed as an extension of the drivers cabin and provided with the necessary partition. In such case the coal-bunker is placed in front of the drivers cabin, but it may also be placed behind the drivers cabin in case the latter is mounted at the fore part of the locomotive, if only the bunker is situated near the stokers cabin.
In order that th e'view from the drivers cabin may be facilitated in spite of the coalbunker being located. in front of the same, the bunker may be provided with one or more channels 6 extending in the longitudinal direction of the locomotive. As shown in Fig. 2, such channels may preferably be arranged in the two outer sides of the coalbunker and extend in straight lines towards the fore end of the locomotive from windows 7 on the drivers cabin.
In case the height of the locomotive or the coal-bunker should be so large that the top of the bunker extends beyond the leading gauge, the said top or central part may be omitted.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1s:-
1. In a locomotive, the combination of a carriage, a boiler supported by said carriage, a cab on the carriage, a saddle-shaped coalbunker placed on the boiler in front of the cab and extending outside the line of sight from the cab, and channels in the coal-bunker extending from the cab in the longitudinal direction of the locomotive..-
2. In a locomotive, the combination of a carriage a boiler supported by said carriage, a saddle-shaped coal-bunker placed above the boiler, and shutters provided at the top of the coal bunker and adapted in opened position to form a hopper for the coaling.
3. In a locomotive, the combination of a carriage, a boiler supported by said carriage, a cab on the carriage, a saddle-shaped coalbunker placed above the boiler in front of the cab and shutters provided at the top of the coal-bunker and adapted in opened position to form a hopper for the coaling.
4:. In a locomotive, the combination of a V-arriage, a boiler supported by said carriage, a saddle-shaped coal-bunker placed above the boiler, and shutters provided at the top of the coal-bunker, and adapted in opened position to form a hopper for the coaling, the fore wall oi the coal-bunker inclining downwards towards the rear en d of the locomotive.
5. In a locomotive the combination of a carriage, a boiler supported by said carriage, a cab on the carriage, a saddle-shaped coalbunker placed above the boiler in front of the cab, channels in the coal-bunker extending from the cab in the longitudinal direction of the locomotive, and shutters provided at the top of the coal-bunker and adapted in opened position to form a hopper for the coaling.
6. In a locomotive, the combination of a carriage, a. boiler supported by said carriage, a cab on the carriage, a saddle-shaped coalbunker placed above the boiler in front of the cab, channels in the coal-bunker extending from the cab in the longitudinal direction of the locomotive, the fore walls of said coal-bunker inclining downwards towards the rear end of the locomotive, and shutters provided at the top of the coalbunker and adapted in opened position to form a hopper for the coaling.
7. In a locomotive, the combination of a carriage, a boiler supported by said carriage,
a cab on the carria g e a saddle-shaped coal bunker placed above the boiler near the cab, windows in the cab, straightlined channels in the outer sides of the coal-bunker extending from said windows towards the fore end of the locomotive, and shutters provided at the top of the coal-bunker and adapted'in opened position to form a hopper for the coaling.
