NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELI ROGERS, or EocEESTEE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND CORN-PLANTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,701, dated November 18, 1873 application filed June 21, 1873.
To all whom fit may concer-n:
Be it known that I, ELI ROGERS, of Rochester, in the county of Fulton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand Corn-Planter; and I do `hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figures l and 2 are vertical sections; Fig. 3, a horizontal section.
The invention will first be fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
A is a double hopper, having a handle, B, and partition a3. The forward end of the handle B is slotted to receive the forward end of the lever C, which projects rearwardly, passes through a slot in the back of hopper A, and
is pivoted to the upper end ofbar D. To
- seed. The holes in plate al register with those of bottom a2, whereby both seed and plaster are simultaneously dropped. The dropping- Slide I is thrown forward to receive seed and plaster for another hill by a spring, K, connected with the said slide and with the lower part of the hopper. The cap L is placed upon the lower part of the seed-box A, where it is secured in place by two Spring-catches, M, which pass up upon the opposite sides of the lower part of the hopper A and catch in notches or teeth formed in said sides. The lower part of the cap L is formed by two parallel plates, N O, one ofwhich is stationary, and the other pivoted. To the upper part of the pivoted plate O is attached a hook, P, which hooks upon a crank, Q, pivoted to lugs attached to the lower part of the seed-box A. Upon the crank-shaft Q is formed, or to it is attached, an arm, R, to the outer end of which is pivoted the lower end of the connecting-rod S, the upper end of which is pivoted to the bar D by the same bolt that pivots said rod to the lever H. With this arrangementthe plates N O, which are pressed close together by the action of the spring K, are forced into the soil, and the rear end of the lever G is drawn upward or toward the handle. This Vmovement operates the slide I, and drops the seed and plaster by spreading the plates N O apart. As the lever C is released the spring Kmoves the various parts of the machine back to their former position. By pressing on the lever C and handle B, the slide I and plate O are caused to drop the seed and plaster.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iS-
1. The cam-hook I? on the plate O, and the crank-shaft Q, combined, as described, with the hand mechanism, as and for the purpose described.
2. The springs M M, combined with cap L, to hold the latter detachably in position on the body of the planter, as specified.
ELI ROGERS.
