FRANK H. wrnson, or nananrazoo, MECHIGAN;
runon.
Application filed February aieaa Serial at. 534,107.
TojaZZ whom it mm concern:
Be it known that ,FRA KH. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in punches.
lhe main objects of this invention are:
First to provide an improved punch for the use of garage repair men and the like for punching gaskets and packings and other comparatively thin material.
Second, to provide a punch having these advantages providing various sized punches which may be very conveniently and rapidly operated, both in the matter of positioning the work and operating the punch, and one which may be used to punch holes in sheets or parts of a large range of sizes.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely p ear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a side elevation of my improved punch.
Fig. H is a Vertical transverse section on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig. I,
the punch being shown mainly in full lines.
In the drawing the base 1 is in the form of a bar channeled on its under side at 2 for the escape of the punchings. An arm 3 overhangs the base, the arm being connected to the base at one end only, as at 4, the other end 5 being open for the introduction of work to the punches.- The base has a plurality of shouldered bores 6 therein providing upwardly facing seat-s 7 for the dies 8. The arm 3 has a plurality of cylindrical bosses 9 on its under side and cylindrical bosses 10 on its upper side. The sides 11 of the arm are beveled upwardly from the bosses 9, thus providing clearance or space for manipulation and adjusting of the work. The arm has a series of shouldered bores 12 aligned with the bores 6 and extending through the bosses 9 and 10 providing guides for the punches 13.
iThese punches are shouldered at 14,. the
i M tt"? shoulders enacting with the shoulderslfi i of the punch guides, thereby limiting the upward movement of the punches The bores 6 are of such diameter that the punches can be introduced into their guides through these hores. The heads 16 of the punches are removably secured thereon -:by thepins 17. Coiled springs 18 are provided for re-' tracting the punches, the lower ends of these springs being supported "by the bosses 10. While their upper ends are supported by the cylindrical parts of, the heads. i.
The punch is operated by striking the heads with a hammer or the like and on thin material they may be operated by striking them with the. hand. The work can be readily adjusted tothe selected punch and the punch operated as stated.
My improved punch is especially designed for use in garages andthe like where it is frequently desirable to punch holes of different sizes in gaskets, packings'and the like, although it is desirable for use in: various other relations. j
I'have illustrated a simple and practical embodiment of myfimprovements and have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain adaptations or modifications which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made i will enable those skilled in the art tojwhich my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i
1. In a punch, a body comprising a bar like basenand an overhanging arm spaced from said: base and connected'thereto at one end only-so that the work may be; introduced between the arm and the base from the open is end, said arm having cylindrical bosses on thetop and bottom thereof and its under side being beveled from its said bosses,'said base havinga plurality of shouldered bores therethrough providing upwardly facing j die seats, said arm having shouldered bores extending through its said bosses and aligned with said die seat bores providing punch guides, die members 'removably arranged in said die seats, shouldered punches provided with removable heads, said die seat bores being of a diameter permitting the introduction of the punches. into the punch guides therethrough when the punch heads are removed, and coiled retracting aligned with said die seat 'bci'es providing punch guides, die me neis reincvahly 'arra'ngedin said die so hcuidlered 'punches provided with i'einovabie heads, said die seat bores heii'zg cf a diameter jpei'mit ting'the introduction of the punches into the punch guides thercthrough when the punch head's areremoved, and 'eciie'd' retracting springs neat "poo for said punches igesting on arnimnd their upperends engaging saidpunch'heads.
In a punch, a body comprising a barlike haseand anoverhanging' arm spaced from said base and connected thereto at one end only so that the Work may be introduced between the arm and the base from the open end, said arin having bosses on the top thereof, sald base being provided with a plural ity of dies, Sfildfiini having buresextending thrcu h its said hosses and 'aiig nsd said ies, punches arranged insaid guides and provided W th hea dsfa'nd "coiled retracting springs-furs 1' punches posed with their lcwenends "embracing said bosses onthe top of eni -em nate u er ends engaging said punchheads, saidpu'nchheads constituting suppoifts for the upper ends of said springs. I
In] Witness whereof, 1 have hereunto set my hand a'nd seal. I
