`10 vtion is to provide an implement for separating the links of a transmission belt chain in an easy and rapid manner by hand operated means, permitting its repair or adjustmentas may be desired. l
Another object is to produce a device that clasps orembraces the individual link to be operated upon in such manner as to firmly hold it, during the action of the link pin ejector, without deforming or detacing ,the 20 tubular roller engaged or in any wayaffecting adjacent link elements. j
A further aim is in the provision of a simple compact tool for the purpose menk tioned, not readily liable to 'derangementl 'With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts later described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawing, constituting an essential part of this .disclosure, and in which z- Figure lois a perspective View of a chain link separator made in accord with the invention.

Figure i is a plan view showing the type of chain on which the implement is adapted 4Q to operate, and indicating one of the links as separated by it= The desirability of t-he tool about to be described will be clearly apparent to users of the type of transmission chains indicated, a5 as due to wear original imperfections and like causes, it is often necessaryto remove a link, which is by no means an easy matter without special devices.
By referring to the drawing the appliance be seen to be comprised of a handle bar suited for convenient manipulation and provided with an enlarged head 11 having a iat top surface 12 substantially level with the main portion of the handle bar.
A. pair of blocks 14; and 15 are fitted to the l head 11, the block 1li being rigidly secured by a transverse pin 16 or other equivalent fastening means, a similar pin 17 fixed in the block 15, passing freely through a slot 13 in the head, the pin acting as a key and also limiting the movement of the block 15 which is slidable on the head.
'lhe opposed faces of the blocks contain registering transverse through recesses 2() and 21, the material thereabove constituting jaws 22 and 23 cut away at the center to present equal semi-circular openings 24- and 25 and bevelled inwardly on each side as at 26 and 27.
The blocks together as a unit are drilled, as at 28, concentric with the jaw openings, and the head 11 is drilled in register therewith, the opening 29 being screw-threaded. A. handle 30 is formed with a rightangle bend 31 fitted to the threaded opening 29 and terminating in a projection 32, which obviously may be forcibly projected upward into the opening 28 or retracted by actuating the handle 30.
A rivet 33 or like fastening is fixed in the handle bar 10 and coiled about its body, below the head, is a wire 34 having opposed arms 35 extending over the head 11, these arms having angularly turned detentV elements 36 projecting towards each other and adapted to hold the block 15 in contact with the fixed block, the ends 37 extending in parallel from the detents within a recess 15 of the movable block when the arms 35 are pressed inwardly, permitting the block to move away from its mate to allow insertion of the chain.
.The chain, shown in detail in Figure 4, is composed of a plurality of tubular rolls 50, mounted on sleeves 51 rotatable on the bodies of pins 52 the sleeves 51 having ends which project through appropriate openings in the ends of inner link plates 53, connecting adjacent rolls in parallel pintles 52' formed on the ends of the pins passing through similar openings in like links 54, connecting the paired rolls to form a continuous chain the ends of the pintles being riveted in the last named, outer links.
ln operation, the spring arms 35 are pressed towards each other to permit the detents 36 to enter the recess 15', the block 15 moved away from its mate, separating the jaws 22 and 23 to permit entering the chain, as shown in broken line in Figure 2; the jews Y plate are then closed to embrace the roll, the detents spring out to maintain them in operative, closed position, gripping the entered roll in a positive manner.
The handle 30 is then turned to advance the ejector 3Q, which coming in Contact with the adjacent end ot' the pintle, forces the pin out ot the links, bending the outer link outwardly, freeing the pin from the lower links and permitting the roll to be removed.
Although the foregoing is descriptive of the preferred embodiment'oit the invention, it will be apparent that minor changes may be made in its construction, without the exercise of invention or con'iicting with the scope of the claims hereto appended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is zl. A roller chain link ing a handle, an enlarged l at one end thereof, said head having a flat surface on' one side adjacent the handle, a block fixed rigidly on the outer end of said head, a second block keying means limiting the movement thereof, a forked resilient detent secured to said handle to extend over the mentioned flat surtace and engage said sliding block when in cont-act with. said xed block, said detent be ing receivable in arecess in the sliding block when retracted, gripping jaws formed on said blocks which, together contain a circular opening, and a disrupter pin operable in separator' compriscyhndrical head slidable on the head,
said head in axial alinenient with the opening in said jaws.
2. A chain link separator comprising a handle, a jaw lixed at the end thereof, a mating slidable on said handle, said jaws being transversely7 recessed and axially bored to receive a chain se tion therebetween, a two pronged spring detent carried by said handle to hold said jaws when closed, a screw operable in said handle in register with the bore of said jaws, a plunger on the end oit said screw engageable with the joint pin oLt the chain, and a. handle on said screw by which it may be operated.
