Beit known that l? lilrorrann il. S. DNL- MoNAoofa citizen of the United [states ot Ain-ericaY and a resident otCincinnat-i, in the county or' Hamiltonand State ot @hiex have invented a certain new and useful .linprovenient in Tailors .Drafting Devices, ot whichthe following is a specilication.
rEllis inventionrelates to certainnfnv and useful improvements in ta-ilors" dralitingde vices and deals more particularly with a measuring instrument which Vobviates the necessity of calculations orremembrance oit intricate rules usuallyemployed inproperly marking the desired measurements Jforthe production of agarnient. lt might be here mentioned that in this particular art certain mathematical calculations together .with additions' or subtractionsof fan inch, or its fractional part7 in ust .be remembered and enteredv into before proper littingfgarnient is to be had, and itis the underlying thought in the present case ytodo away lwith such a procedure and produce a -device'by which` an unskilled personcan accurately perform the duties of a, eutteiz. y y
lt is also-ensei thev essential. objects et the present invention Jtri-'provide a device from which all ot the measurements .inc-- dental to the production of garmentare taken from the inner side as distinguished whereouter edge.
Also in the present ease it will he readily seen that utter the designa-ted size is determined the operator simply follows this particular munber through the entire operation in laying out the `pattern and a perfectly fitting garment will follow7 if cut aclcording to the pattern. Y
My invention will be more readily un- (.lerstood byv referring to the accompauying drawings forming a part ol tliisspeoilication aud in which. Fig. l is a. iront elevation: llfig. 2, a rear elevation;` Fig. 3 a diagrammatical view ollv the linear coin'igj;urations for cuttingpurposes; Fig. et. an en@ larged view of `Fig. l, partly broken away, showing the computedmeasurements as applied to the diagrammatical view in Fig. 3; Figz, a rectilinear end view ort Fig. 4, showing' the method of extension hori- Zontally; and Fig. 6, a rectilinear' end view of Fig. l, and showing in dotted lines the method of vertical extension.
` TAILORSUDRAFTING CINCINNATI, oi-rro.
:envien Serial No. 510,014.
Referring more lin detail to the drawings, wherein similar letters ott reference inolcate like parts throughout the' several views, l provide two parallel bars or blades A and B which `are right singularly connected ata point C with apair oft parallel end blades D and E. The outermost of these blades, to wit.y A. an d D are somewhat longer than theinner blades B and l5, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. rThe inner blades B and E are slightly y the inner edges oi,l the blades il and l) as iflesignated at F and (l respectively. The longitudinal edges ot each liilade E and lll are provided with a. series ot O'rafluations .or scale marks by which proper and exact linear configurations of any particular size of garment may be had. (lu the blade B the first of these vgraduationis designated,
at I, and indicates the neel; measure- `ments; the graduations along the inner edge of blade il, as .illustrated at l, indicate the measurements `from. the back4 center seam to the shoulder;` the graduati ons numbering 20e-56 along the outer edge of l indica-ted by the iel'erence characterjL nate the armhole measurements; the scale illustrated in the centcroi blade l?A and identified by the letter M deals with the measurements for the trent halt of rthe shoulder7 while side of blade B marked ll and reading` 20`30. designates the measurements tor a hall oll the breast of the garment; and the end ot blade l will give the :trout odge ol the garment. These various iiieasuwments are yclearly shown by the vertical lines inthe diagranimatical View Fig. and are designated in regular sequence by the nu inerals ll to 1G inclusive,
The blade E is also provided with suitable graduated marks designated (l. 'tor doter mining the linear measurements ol tue sliouh 1* seam which is the uppermost horizontal line shown in ll`ig. o and also `lor sri ing the proper meuseireinent for the een: breast line designated by rb Fig, 31,.
The blades and D are graduated alone their inner erllgesl as indicated at l l?. and these graduations are t'or the 'purpose ot determining the rertical. or horizontal ad justinent of the device prior to the final measurements that are to be taken from the inner blades B and E.
Smaller graduations on the traine inembers A and D are for computing cura/'ed spaced lronji l desigy thescale alongtlie outer are drawn thereon.
. ifieeoi portions such as arm-pits and the like, but do not, however, constitute an essential part of my invention. The reversed part of `the trame-members A and B, shou'n in Fig. 2, are identical with its 'component parts ot Fig. l and its diverging` gra-dilutions, being only for the measurement ot skirts and the like. l
It is, et course, understood that various changes and modiications may be made in the details ot construction of the above speciically-described measuring` or drafting device, without departing from the essence and'spirit ot my invention herein, and certain of the details or' construction can also be varied according to individual prei*- erence.
For the purpose et better understanding 1n invention, I Will nonTv brieily describe the use ot my device in properly outlining a chart or pattern for a size-36 coat. A suitable sheet ol: relatively stiff paper is preterably employed, although material ot an)7 ycharacter might be used with the same result, and right-angularly extending lines rEhe inside edge ot the blade B is then aligned with the transverse line-designated R, while the inside ot blade VE is aligne'divith the rear edge illust-rated ol' the,
at neck scale L R andopposite the scale mark 36 a chalk-mark is made. Oppo- 's'ite thescale mark 360i the back shoulder measurements K, another" chalk-mark is made. The operator then inserts the chalk or a. pointed instrument or the like, "within the slot F opposite lthe graduated mark 36 on they blade A asindicated at K2, and he then `advances the device until the inserted instrument engages with the closed end of He then proceeds to make suitable marks opposite the graduseries ofi vgraduated ations 36 in the scales designating the armhole, the iront hal-t ot the shoulder and the halt o'l' the breast of the coat, the final measurement determining the front edge ot the garment being` ltaken irom the extreme edge of the blade B. The operator then makes a suit-able mark opposite the graduation 36 oit the sca-le O, on blade E, which gives the proper measurement. Jor the breast line, after whicht he inserts a suitable instrument in the slot Gr, as indica-ted at K3, opposite the scale-mark 36 on the blade D, and shifts the device until the instrument en- 4gages With the closed Wall H3 of said slot G. He then again makes a mark opposite the 3G on the scale'O, which gives him the proper measurement for the shoulder seam indicated at T, and the top line of the pat-tern is determined by the transverse end ot the blade E. v y y I claim t 1 ln an implement ot the class described., consistingot a plurality o t pairs et `parallely spaced, right-angularly disposed blades, the inner blade of eachpair havingl scales thereon tor del termi ing,` `linear .measurements oftl a garment, andthe outer blades carrying suitable scale-markings for determining the set of the"v implement prior to the marking;` et certain of the linear measurements. ln an implement of the classV descril ed consisting` 'oit y right-angularly `disposed blade-members, each of said members carryingscale-markings, said markings so related one to `the other that a given size of a, garment may be'delineatedfby identifyngthe particular size successively with each ot the various scale-markings.`
