To all whom it may concern:
I, TVILLIAM Be it known that H. SHU- MAKnn, a citizen of the United States, and
resident of Miami, in the county of Dede and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Car Replacers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to car replacers, more particularly to devices for holding a replacer in applied'position with respect to a rail, and
it consists in the combinations, arrangements and constructions herein described and claimed.

The holder illustrated in the drawing and embodying the preferred by me comprises a longitudinal body 4t of flat bar-like conformation and being made of any material having the requisite strength, such as steel or the like. The key 11 is beveled at its smaller end, indicated at 17.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The replacers are of a well known type of construction and each includes a front side 18 and a back side 19, the front and back sides being joined together at their upper ends and being downwardly divergent or inclined in respect toeach other. The back side 19 is provided with the usual opening 20 which is formed therethrough intermediate of its lengthand at an appreciable distance from its lower end.
The body 4: is arranged so that the portion 6 embraces the edge of the base flange of a rail and the replacer is arranged adjacent to the opposite edge of the base flange of the rail so that the front side of the re placer rests upon the portion '5 of the body adjacent to the juncture of the latter with the curved portion 8. The portion 9 will then be partially disposed between the front and back portions of the replacer and will extend through the opening 20 of the back side of the replacer so that the lower end of the key 11 can be projected through the slot 10 with the curved wall 12 of the key in contact with the outer face of the rear side of the replacers. this point'that the curvature of the portion 8 is such that the end portion 9 extends substantially at right angles to the rear side of the replacer and it will therefore be obvious thatthe replacer will be securely held,
against the base flange of the rail when the key is driven through the slot sufficiently to occasion adesired pressure and camming action onfithe rear side of the replacer. Since the key :11 is curved, the frictional engagement of the wall. 13 thereof with the outer end of the slot 13 tends to hold the key in any position to which driven. Since the key is tapered, replacers of different sizes and shapes may be held effectively against rails of any ordinary size when my improved holder is applied. W hen it is desired to remove the key, it may be readily pried loose from a position in which engaged with the slot by means of a bar, or like tool, arranged to engage the face 16 of 114V at the upper end of the key.
The curved portion extends above the plane of the lower edge I" the front side of the replacer and thus serves to resist any appreciable movement of the front side of the replacer toward the rear side thereof, thus tending to prevent any distortion of It is to be observed at the replacer on account of stresses received in service.
Obviously, my invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that in which illustrated in the accompanying drawings and I therefore consider as my own all modifications and adaptations thereof which fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is l. The combination with a car replacer having oppositely inclined downwardly divergent front and rear sides and having an opening formed through the rear side above the level of the lower edge of the front side, of a device for holding the replacer in applied position in respect to a rail, said device comprising a longitudinal bodyhaving means at one end for embracing an edge portion of the base flange of a rail and being of a length to underlie the base flange of the rail when disposed transversely thereof and to extend beneath the front'side of the replacer and through the opening of the rear side of the replacer to project rearwardly thereof substantially at right angles to the rear side, said rearwardly projecting portion having a slot formed thcrethrough, and a curved key engaging the slot and the rear side of the replacer to hold the latter against movement relatively to the rail.
