APPARATUS FOR'PEENING PACKING RING-S.
Application filed. May 14, 1919. Serial No. 297,118.
This invention relates to apparatus for peening piston packing-rings, for rejuvenating old piston rings or vimparting to new rings a sufficient tension for yieldably.
holding them in contact with the cylinder orthe piston as the case may be. Here tofore, this tensioning hasbeen accome plished by striking caused to exertan expansive-influence upon the piston ring. This peening has been accomplished by imparting successive peening blows to the face of the piston, one at a time, progressively around the piston ring.
In imparting these peening blows one at a time, there is imparted an unequal elastic-- ity to the piston ring which causes the lat ter to warp so that it isimpossible to impart thereto an equal amount of tension throughout its wholev circumference; Furthermore the process involving the successive peening blows consumes a great deal of time andis therefore very costly. p
The object of the present inventionis to to provide an apparatus and process by means of which the whole'circumferenc'e of the piston ring may be peened simulta: neously and uniformly throughout, thereby thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, showing by way of example, one of many possible forms of apparatus by which the newprocess may be performed,-
successive pe'ening. blows against the face ofthe piston ringsothat the metal will be there compressed and Figure 1 is a plan of the apparatus;
Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view partly in elevation of the apparatus showing the parts thereof in one position;
Fig. 3 is-a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the parts in'a different position; and
Fig. 4 is a plan of the parts shown in Fig. 8.
' The new press. p v i a The foundation part of the apparatus comprises abolster plate 5, adapted to rest upon the bed of the drop press, and provided with the bolt holes 6 by means of apparatus is intendedto be used a .with an ordinary board or drop press, and is adapted to rest uponthe bed of such the bed. The bolster plate is provided with a central opening 8, countersunk at its up-I per part, and'surroundedby a plurality of radial upwardly opening recesses -9, each.
of raised radial guide lugs 12, spaced from,
and sin-rounded by a raised annular seat 13 adapted to receive a piston-packing ring 14 thereon. Surrounding the annular seat there is-provided a "heavy annular bolster flange 15 concentric and spaced from said ring; seat and forming with-the ringseatan anvil receivingrec'ess adaptedto receive an annular anvil 18v o'fhardened steel.
Disposed between and; guided by said lugs respectively. are a pluralityof radially disposed radially. movable approximately sector-shaped peening members '20 provided wvhich the bolster plate may be secured'to with concaved inner end faces 21, together forming a downwardly tapering opening.
Said peening members are provided with iarcuate outer ends having a largenumberv of :vertically disposed, closely adjacent.
peeniug. project-ions or teeth 22, adaptedto] contact with the packinglrin'g 14 placed 'upon the seat 13 and supported against outward movement by the anvil 18.
The PGBIllIlg. members 20. are provided with radial recesses 26 havlng end shoulders 27. The recesses 9 and 26 register with 1 each other and form, housings in which are compressed helical springs 29 adapted to hold said peening members in a normal midposition with the teeth 22 out .of contact with the packingring. The annular re .taining plate 30, secured to the lugs 12 by means of the screws 31, holds the peening members between the lugs. I
The means for driving the peening members outwardly so that the teeth come into peening contact with the piston ring comprises a tapering plunger hammer 32 which itself comprises, or is mounted on,- the plunger of the drop press. This plunger hammer is provided with a tapering body porition 33, adapted to engage in said downwardly tapering recess formed by the' concaved faces 21; The lower reduced end ofthe plui'iger'hammer is guided'in the central opening- 8.
In operation, the plunger 32 is raised to its upperlimit', and a new or an old packing ring 14 is placed upon the raised seat 18, substantially in contact with the'anvil 18. The plunger is then released and drops with great force; forcing the taperingbody portion33'into the tapering opening; thereby iorcing the p eening members radially outwardly until the teethengage and indent the'pistonringandexert an intense peening action throughout the whole of its inner circumference, thereb'yevenly and thoroughly compressing and tensioning the inner faceof the ring throughout. The plunger is then aga'ln'raised and another piston ring put in'place ready to be peene'd and the operation is'repeated until all of the rings are peened: 1
Obviously the" invention is not limited to processes or apparatus for p'eening the inner face-ofthe piston rings, noris it. limited to piston rings.
Iclaim' aS'nly invention: I
