To all whom. it maf'z/ conce/ML.' Y; Be it known that Il JoHN HANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Doyhof, in the Territory of Alaska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trawling Swivels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus used by fishermen, particularly to swivels, and has for its-object the provision of a swivel which may be used'in a line for catching fish of any kind where the use of a swivel is necessary, the present invention contemplating the provision of a spring within the body of the swivel whereby lto permit a certain degree of resilience when a fish strikes so that the line may give and so that danger ofxlosing. the fish will be greatly reduced.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is solconstruc-ted that the swivel or eye pins may be removed when worn and which is likewise so constructed that the spring within the interior of the body may be replaced in case of breakage or in the event of its becoming weak and worn.
Another object is the provision of a 'device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in construction, which will resist the action of salt water on account e of its materials, which will be highly efficient in use,l durable in service, and a general improvement 1n the art.
With the above andother obJects and advantages` in view, the invent-ion consists in -fthe details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and' claimed and illustrated in the accompanying.' drawings in .'whicli- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device,

which extends entirely to the open endl butl which terminates short of the closed end. as shown; Associated with the closed end o'this body is a swivel member formed as a length 13 of suitable wire inserted through the hole 11 and having one end formed with a retaining head 14. Exteriorly of the body this wire member 13 is bent to form an eye or ,loop 15 and has its ,terminal portion wrapped about itself, as indicated at 16.
Threaded into\the ope'n end of the body is a plug member 17 which has its exterior contour substantially the same as theclosed end of the body and whichiis provided with a longitudinal hole 18 thrdugn which is inserted a swivel member which has one portion 19 extending substantially throughout the length of the bore 12 and which is formed beyond the end -of theplug 17 with an eye or loop 20, the terminal being coiled as shown at 21. Disposed within the bore 12 is a coil spring 22 which has one end abutting against the plug 17 and which has its other end abutting against a disk or washer 23 movable within the bore. The portion 19 of the second mentioned swivel member passes through this disk 23 and has its end formed with a head 24.
In the use of the device constructed and I,
assembled as above described, it will be apparent that the swivel members will operate in exactly the same manner as otherwell known swivel' members in so far as preventing tangling and raveling of the line is concerned. However, a distinct advantage of the present device is that the spring 22 provides resilience `so -that when my device is interposed in a line and a iish strikes or bites upon a hook, breaking of the line or tearing of the ishs mouth with consequent escape, is preventedowing to the fact that the eye or loop 20 may move with respect to the body as one portion 19 of the4 former is connected with the spring-pressed disk. In this way it will be seen that it is possible to make a larger catch of ish as danger of loss is reduced to the minimum. Another feature of advantage is that in the event of any possible corrosion or wearing away of the eyes or loops 15 and 20, the swivel members may be quickly and easily removed and replaced by new ones so that the device should have an extremely long life and be comparatively free from destruction through wear.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
A device of the character described comprising an elongated body formed of separable sections having a screw threaded connection, one section being provided with a small bore and the other section being provided With a relatively large bore eXtending throughout the major portion of its length and being further provided with a somewhat smaller recess at the. end of said bore, said other member being also formed with a longitudinally extending hole communicating with said recess, a member rotatably mounted Within said ,longitudinally extending hole and provided at its free end with a head located within the recess and In testimony whereof I affix my signa--y ture.
