Application filed July, 1921.
To all whom z'zf may concern.'
Be it known that l, GEORGE T. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bremerton, in the county of Kitsap and State of l/Vashington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and more particularly to toy boats for indoor use.
The Obj ect of the invention is to provide a toy of the paddle wheel type to be drawn over the iioor for the amusement of small children.
Another object is to provide a toy of this character having a paddle wheel so constructed that the drawing of the boat over the floor operates to rotate the wheel and impart to the boat the appearance of a real boat, the blades of which produce a clicliing sound when the wheel is so rotated.
1rWith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown, described and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawing:
Figure l represents a side elevation of a toy constructed in accordance with this invention, and,
Fig. 2 represents a top plan view thereof with parts broken out and in section.
In the embodiment illustrated the toy constituting this invention comprises a body l preferably constructed of a solid bloclr although not necessarily so the configuration of which is that of a steamboat. rlhis body l is provided at its rear endL with a pair of longitudinally extending laterally spaced arms 2 between the free ends of which is journaled a paddle wheel 3, washers a being mounted between the ends of said wheel and the inner faces of the arms 2 to provide for the free rotation of the wheel without binding on said arms.
rlhe wheel 3 has a plurality of radiating blades 5 any desired number of which may be employed7 eight being here shown, and the outer edges of these blades are shown flat or straight throughout their length extending' substantially at rightangles to their side faces or edges as is shown clearly in Fig. l so that when the wheel is rotated the edges of the blades at the perimeter thereof will engage the floor as shown in Fig. l so that there will be suiiicient friction to rotate the wheel when the boat is drawn over the iioor.
Serial No. 482,731.
The bottom 6 of the body l of the boat is arranged substantially in alinement with the perimeter of the blades 5 of the paddle wheel as is shown clearly in F ig. 1 so that when the boat body is drawn over the floor the wheels will engage and rotate the wheel, the clicking sound produced by the rotation of said wheel causing it to more closely resemble a real boat.
F rom the above description it will be obvious that a toy constructed as shown and described lherein may be very cheaply manufactured and willy afford great amusement for small children indoors especially adapting it for rainy day use.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specication, but it will be understood that any modification within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is-claimed is: v
l. A toy comprising a body member formed from a solid block of material and representing a miniature steamboat adapted to be mounted on and manually shifted over a Hat supporting surface, said member having a pair of spaced rearwardly extending lon gitudinally disposed rigid integral arms at the rear end thereof, and a rotatable paddle wheel journaled between said arms and including blades having angular edges and positioned to contact with the surface on which said body member is manually shifted, causing thereby the rotation ofthe wheel.
2. A toy comprising a body member formed from a solid block of material and representing a miniature steamboat adaptedto be mounted on and manually shifted over a flat supporting surface, said member having apair of spaced rearwardly extending longitudinally disposed rigid integral arms at the rear end thereof, a rotatable y said zu'msfflueh with said body and the blades of the Wheel projecting 'above the body. t
In testimony whereof, I afX my signature hereto.
GEORGE T. THOMPSON.
