To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that WILLIAM (1. CAR- PENTER, citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Coles and State of Illinois, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in belt buckles.
An important object of the invention is to provide a belt buckle having a hook to engage with the belt loop, and a serrated jaw to engage with the flap of the trouser, whereby the buckle is securely held to the trouser against vertical displacement with relation thereto, when in use, but may be readily and conveniently separated from the flap, when desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is of simplified construction and is inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a housing, constituting the body portion of the buckle. This housing is U-shaped in cross-section and includes an outer side or top 6 and sides 7. The bottom of the housing is open and is covered by a bottom plate 8, and this plate is provided near corresponding ends with apertured ears 9, for receiving tongues 10, integral with the sides 7. These tongues are bent horizontally over the bottom plate, and hence this end of the bottom plate is locked to the housthe knuckles 12.

The numeral M designates a jaw extending longitudinally upon the inner side of the bottom plate 8, and this jaw is provided with longitudinal side flanges 15. At one end, these side flanges have apertured knuckles 16 formed therein, receiving the pin 13. The knuckles 16 fit exteriorlv of The flanges 15 are provided with teeth or serrations 17, as shown. The forward end of the jaw 14- extends inwardly of the serrations 11, as shown.
The jaw 1 1 is urged toward tle bottom plate 8 by a torsional coil spring 18, carried by the pin 13, and having one end engaging the bottom plate 8, and its opposite end en gaging the jaw 14, beneath loop hook or tongue 19. Thls loop hook or tongue 1s U- shaped and is preferably stamped from the material of the jaw 14:.
One end 20 of-the belt is passed into the housing 5 adjacent the bottom plate 8, and 1s clamped to'the bottom plate by means of 21, pivoted in the housing, and serrated to engage with the end 20 of the belt. The other end 22 of the belt is passed into the opposite end of the housing, adjacent its top 6 and contacts with an inwardly projecting cam 23, preferably formed from a piece of metal integral with the. top 6, and bent inwardly from the same. The end 22 of the belt is held against displacement in the adjusted position by means of a double ended slidin clamp 2%. This sliding clamp is provided at its end with outwardly extending lateral flanges 26 and 27, facing toward the top 6. The sliding clamp 24 is provided at its ed 'es with fingers 28, projecting through longitudinal slots 29 in the sides 7. The slots 29 are sufficiently wider than the thickness of the fingers 28 to permit of restricted turning movements of these fingers. As shown in Fig. 2, the end 22 of the belt has within the housing 5 between the cam 26 and the flange 27, and the sliding clamp 24- has provided adjacent been inserted been shifted to the right, so that the flange clamping action increases as the belt is pulled.
away from the housing 5. It is obvious that the belt may be readily fed into the housing, as the sliding clamp i l may move away from the cam 23, when desired. To release the end of the belt, the user engages the fingers 28 and shifts the sliding clamp 2t to the left, at which time the end 22 may be withdrawn from the housing.
In the use of the buckle, the samev is se-- cured to one end of the belt by means of the clamp or cam 21. The buckle is now brought in proximity to the front flap of the trouser, near the top thereof, and the jaw ll is arranged upon the inner side of the flap, while the bottom plate 8 and associated elements are arranged upon the outer side of the flap. lhe teeth 11 and 17 are therefore adapted to securely engage with the fabric of the flap, and the buckle is therefore positively locked to the flap against displacement; The hook 19 s also engaged within the belt loop 19. The free end of the belt is now passed within the housing 5 betweenthe cain and the sliding clamp 24, and adjusted to the desired position, and the clamp willautomatically lock the freeend of the belt in the desired adjusted position. The free end of the belt-may be released by moving the sliding clamp 24, as above stated.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is tovbe taken as apreferred example of the same, and that various changes inthe size, shape, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of ny invention, or the scope'of the subjoined claims.
ll'aving thus described my invention, I claim:
l. buckle \i'omprising'ahousing provided in its sides with longitudinal slots and. having a cam element near one end, a sliding clamp within the housing provided near its ends with laterally extending flanges projecting toward the cam, said sliding clamp having fingers slidable within the slots and adapted to partake of restricted turning movements therein, a serrated aw pivotally connected with one end of the housing and adapted to engage inwardly ofthe flap of the trousers, and means for securing one end of a belt to the housing while the other end of the belt is adapted to be passed between said cam andsliding clamp.
2. A buckle comprising a body portion, means for securing one end of the belt to the buckle, adjustable means for engaging the opposite end of the belt and secured to the body portion, a serrated jaw extending longitudinally upon the inner, side of the body portion and pivotally connected therewith and adapted to engage upon the inner side of the flap of the trousers, and a spring to urge the jaw toward the body portion.
