CUE TU?.
Application led July 5,
To all wir/m` it may concern:
Be it known that l, HARRY C. iirniivs, a citizen ott the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the county ot Cascade and State of Montana, have invented new and usei'ul improvements in Cue Tips, olf which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to an improved billiard cue tip.
My object is to produce, in a device of this character, means whereby an air cushion is provided between the tip and the end oi' a cue.
A further object is to produce a means ior attaching a tipto a cue which will obviate the necessity of the employment of glue and the use oi clamps in holding the tip on the cue during the drying process of the glue.
It is a still further object to produce a cue that has its end provided with a reduced conical extension on which is arranged a metal conical sleeve which has its bore grooved longitudinally to receive therein the parts of the cue forced outwardly from the conical extension when the sleeve is wedged thereon to aord a tight connection between the sleeve and cue, while on the sleeve there is threaded a terrule which has secured in its outer end, in a novel manner7 the tip, the said tip having its inner portion in contacting engagement with the outer end ot the sleeve and the latter projecting be yond the conical extension of the cue`r whereby an air cushion chamber is provided between the tip and cue.
rlhe foregoing, and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative association of parts, such as is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this specification.
In the drawings Figure .i is a side elevation ot' a cue in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is similar view with parts in section.
Figure 3 is a substantially central longitudinal sectional perspective view or' the sleeve.
Figure l is a central longitudinal sectional view through the ierrule showing the tip therein.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 55 the cue is indicated by the numeral 1 and is 192i. serial No. J:sent/s.
of the ordinary wenden constiiictionA The cue, in the present instancel lirwever` has its reduced end provided with a reduced conical extension 2. @n the extension there is received the conical slee sleeve is of a greater length than extension 2, and therefore proj ecris end oi the extension. The sleev 3 has its bore provided with longitudinal grooves il that are designed to receive taerein the hunched or expanded parts of the wood liber which are projected from tl i. c beyond the rile end 2 when the sleeve 3 is wedged on the said end 2. The sleeve at its inner and widened end is thickened on its outer surface, and the said t iicltened portion is provided with threads 6. Designed to be arranged over the sleeve 3 is a ferrule 7. rlhe errule is also oi a hollow frusto-conical formation and is or a greater length than the sleeve. The terrule has its bore, at its inner and widened end provided with threads 8 that engage with the threads 6 of the sleeve 3. rllhe bore ot the tei-rule is of a size to snugly engage the outer surface of the sleeve so that a tight joint is maia tained between these elements.
The :errule 7, at a slight distance 'from its outer and reduced end is provided with au annular inwardly rounded 0roove 9 and an E3 annular cross sectionally angular lip 'l0 be- 8K5 tween the said outer end oi:x the said groove.
The compressible tip is indicated by the numeral 11 and has its inner end reduced, at 12. rlhe outer edge ci the reduced portion 12 is formed with an extension 13 that is rounded in cross section and which com municates with an inwardly directed angular groove 14. rlhe groot/e la is designed to receive the lip 10 of the terrule i', and the rounded or ribbed portion 13 et the tip is designed to be received in the groeve 9 ot the errule 7 By reference to l iQjure 2 of the drawings, it will be seen that an air pocket 15 is provided between Vthe inner end of the tip 11, and the outer end et the extension 2 of the cue. This pocket provides a dead air space and the. air therein serves as a cushion for the tip.
It is thought that the iforegoing description(` when taken in connection with the drawings will Jfully set forth the construction and advantages ot the imf vement to those skilled in the art to which such inventions relate. and that iiurther detailed description will not be required.
Having described the invention. I claim:-
A eue having a reduced truste-conical extension at one end thereof, a truste-conical metal sleeve of a greater length than the eue extension having its here grooved and designed to be wedged on the cue extension.. said sleeve having its inner widened end thickened on its outer surface and provided with threzids e truste-conical ferr-nie ot e greater length than the sleeve designed to be received over the sleeve and httving` its inner widened end interierb7 reduced and threaded to engage with the threads or' the sleeve,
seidv -ferruie having its here adjacent to its outer end providediwith zi continuous groove and an angular head outward of the groove, a. tip on the seid end of the ferruie having e reduced portion provided with an outer bead und en inner groove to engage in the head end groove et the ferrule, the said tip, When the errule is screwed 'on the sleeve1 designed to Contact with the outer end oit the sleeve and to be spaced Jfrom 'the end of the eue to provide an air pocket therebetween.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
