Description
1. A. HAARVHL Waist-Band Fastenings for Pantalunns, &c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
JOEN A. EAAEVIG, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAISTBAND-FASTENINGS FOR PANTALOONS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,334, dated November 4, 1873; application filed July 12, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. HAARVIG, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement inWaistband-Fastenings for Pantaloons, &e.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the saine, reference being' had to the annexed drawings making a part Vof this specification, and to the letters and 1i gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a sectional view of iny waistband-fastening. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the saine. Fig. 3 is a View of the same as used.
The object of this invention is to provide a hidden fastening for the front of the waistband of pantaloons, or wherever such a fastening is desired 5 and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the hoolrplates and sprin catch, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the waistband, the ends b b of which are designed to be fastened together, one end being lapped over the other. The underlap, Z1, usually the right, is provided with the plate C, perforated at a a for the fastening-thread or rivet by which it is secured to the cloth, and provided with the hook or edge-cla1np c, designed to pass around and under the edge of the cloth, in the Inanner of a clamp, and serving to prevent this plate from being bent upward by the tongue of its fellow. On the under side ofthe plate (l a seinicircular recess,
d, is formed, and provided with a central boss or circular rise, e. The overlap b', usually the left, is provided with the hook-plate D. This plate is perforated for suitable fastening-threads or rivets, and its front portion, seinieircular in shape, is bent backward to form the hook or tongue n, which, when the plates are put together, engages with the recess d of the plate C. Opposite the central boss or rise e of the plate C a circular aperture, i', is made through the tongue n of the plate D. Below this aperture rises-from the base portion of the plate D an elastic tongue or spring-finger, t, which may be either stamped out of the metal of the plate, or separately formed and attached thereto.
lVhen the hook or tongue of the plate D is inserted in the recess of the plate C froin the rear, the spring o presses the boss e of the 1atter plate into the aperture r of the tongue, thereby locking the two plates together in such a manner that the fastening will not becomeV loose, unless they are pulled apart with some degree of force.
What I claini as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the recessed plate C, having the boss e, of the hook-plate D, having the aperture r in the tongue, and the springfinger o, arranged to press the boss e into the aperture 1, substantially as specied.
In testimony that I elainl the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN AREN'I HAARVIG.
Vitnesses R. SAYER, AUsTIN CLEMENT.
